Have to be honest since trump won i wasn't going anyway. But anyone cancelling or going elsewhere?
I have a big birthday this year, I would go to the garbage dump rather than support America,/musk in any way. I know therwmis at least half of America that doesn't.support this shxt and for them I am sorry but for the republicans too spineless and self interested to resist their dictator.trump...not one iota of sympathy for the rising prices loss of Medicaid or medicare.

YABU ..to cancel/Not go
YANBU...wouldn't touch it with a bargepole

Depends whether you think Americans are resourceful enough to keep businesses going. Or whether they just roll over and close. I don’t think they will. I tend to think Americans keep the show on the road and have a can-do philosophy. I’m fully prepared to see some services curtailed but Yellowstone closed to all visitors, I don’t think so. Thanks for the upbeat summary of my holiday though!

DreamyRedNewt · 03/03/2025 08:52

I would no only not go at the moment, I am also not buying anything american from here. Not supporting anything american

C0tt0nCandy · 03/03/2025 08:52

The parks themselves need to be protected as well
as visitors. Last down there was a shutdown Joshua trees were being cut for firewood.

AtIusvue · 03/03/2025 08:52

They’re now deprioritising Russian cyber attacks. This administration are nothing but Russian assets.

We now live in an upside down world, where they’re trying to make people believe Russia are the good guys and Ukraine are the baddies.

They claim that Americans don’t want to waste money on wars (perfectly reasonable) so why have they just sent 4 billion to Israel, bypassing Congress? Not only that, they released a statement giving their full backing and security assurances!

They lie and manipulate at every opportunity.

I just read RFK opinion piece about the measles outbreak in Texas….basically he just says doctors should administer vit A to kids and adults! And that it’s up to you if you want the vaccine. That a healthy diet is the best medicine. Complete insanity. Children will die and they literally don’t care.

It’s a cult. I hope America can escape its clutches.

Do your own research. It’s being widely reported Staff have been cut so badly there is nobody to train seasonal staff and tough decisions are having to be made. Parks need staff. As important as it is to you visitor safety and park protection comes before your holiday.

So it’s now a health risk to travel to certain parts of the US. Which will probably only get worse now that RFK is in charge of health.

A man who as an adult, pumped his body full of heroin, yeh listen to that guy!

As disgusted am I am by the horror show of that press conference (and all the rest of it)... it's worth keeping in mind that only half of Americans support Trump.

America is going through an existential crisis but it's still a wonderful country with a hugely rich cultural history, incredible cities and scenery and fantastic people.

I work for a US company and my colleagues from there are utterly ashamed of what's being done to their country and in their name. Why should we throw all of them under a bus because of the behaviour of the Orange Despot and his cronies? Trump will pass, eventually. America will still be there.

That said, I would be more nervous about travelling there than I would two years ago. The craziness is out of control at the moment.

Only half? But for such a big country with so many millions of people, half is a hell of a lot...

I love the country, it is actually my favourite country to go on holiday to, but I'll wait for 4 years before I go back there.

I don't know if it's exactly half. But it's very polarised. For every Trump supporter there are many people who fear and loathe him.

It depends how bad it gets doesn’t it.

I'm sure I will be shot down for this, but a total shutdown might suit the Government. They are due to impose tarrifs on Canadian timber, so need a plentiful supply domestically. Having closed and empty national parks would enable them to award logging contracts and destroy vast swathes of protected forests.

TizerorFizz · 03/03/2025 10:35

I have done research! There’s little to see except speculation. Plus the NP website for Yellowstone has no info at all on what they might no longer do. I can envisage long queues to get in. I can see possible issues with backcountry trails and facilities. 4 million people visit Yellowstone park annually. I cannot see that it will be closed. There are still staff and many private companies are involved here, it’s not just government staff. Anyway I cannot get money back so I’m stuffed! We are going to 2 other NPs so I’ll have to take what comes. As I said, the rest of the world is still there to explore but it’s getting smaller by the year in terms of feeling comfortable about going.

"Africa" is not a homogeneous country you muppet!

There are plenty of African countries who are conducting themselves far more democratically than the USA in the United Nations right now. And investing more effectively in the future of their women and children.

And as I said, the choice wasn't made to "virtue signal". The choice was made to prevent my tax dollars (from sales taxes, airline taxes etc) on holiday from being used by the US Treasury to fund even more tax breaks for those earning over $360k a year, while people doing essential jobs well are laid off by the richest bloke in the world.

If you find that morally objectionable, that's on you 🤷🏼‍♀️

We can’t expect the average American to know much about other countries. They are raised to believe that most other countries are . . . what have their politicians called them? Was it shit holes? Something like that. They believe they are the only important country

Many years ago I worked (in the UK) for an American company. An American colleague didn’t understand why there were border controls when you went from one European country to another one. (This was before Schengen was implemented.) She didn’t understand that Europe is a continent that consists of independent sovereign nations. She thought we were just like the US, where all the states are part of just one nation.

And at a trade exhibition in Germany, an American didn’t see why the shops were shut on Saturday afternoons and Sundays. She thought they ought to be open, like they were in the US. We tried to explain that this was how the Germans ran their own country.

Just two small examples, but overall I got the distinct impression that our American colleagues knew a lot less about Europe than we did about the US. But I did have a couple of wonderful visits to the US while I worked for that company, and met some lovely people.

That's your loss, not America's @jamaisjedors. NY is an amazing place.

PurpleThistle7 · 03/03/2025 13:27

I spent a while on the phone with a friend of mine yesterday. She's a social worker in New York. They are cutting programmes everywhere - homelessness is increasing, there are more children living in poverty, etc etc etc. Food costs have been high for a long time but it's even worse now. All her local restaurants have an egg surcharge added onto anything with eggs in it as it's up to $1/egg at the shops (which isn't anything to do with politics, just another thing to navigate). It all sounds terribly depressing.

Of course you can visit the states, stay in a bubble of affluent liberal people and go home, but it really is important to consider the whole picture when choosing where to travel and spend your money.

(And yes - I do consider this while travelling more broadly, I don't only judge America. I just think the difference is so stark from what it was like in the states just a few years ago and it is only going to get worse.)

I have no idea how anyone going to the states has no idea of the serious safety concerns of both flying and visiting national parks, but anyone still going should definitely be careful... and make sure your measles jabs are up to date too.

Anyone who is white, heterosexual, not pregnant, financially secure, vaccinated and English speaking is almost certainly going to be fine - almost anywhere really (barring the disturbingly high chance of getting caught up in a mass shooting - my dad's synagogue, my grandmother's care home, my friend's child's school and my sister-in-law's workplace have all had mass shootings in the last 8 years so it's not 'that' ridiculous to consider), but anyone who isn't one of those things should consider. And, to be honest, anyone who isn't one of those things and yet feels uncomfortable benefitting from their random privilege should also be sure they want to contribute to this mess financially.

We will be in the states but we will be doing everything we can to be responsible - shopping locally, staying away from crowds, etc. And will definitely breathe a sigh of relief when our plane touches down back in the UK after!

OneLemonDog · 03/03/2025 17:02

Anyone see Tulsi Gabbard (Trump's Director of National Intelligence) criticising the UK and other European nations for fighting against democracy and freedoms?

This isn't about "not going to the US because the current administration is problematic" - its about not supporting a country that is actively repositioning itself as an enemy of the free world.

TizerorFizz · 03/03/2025 18:28

No one visiting the USA on holiday from the uk is a pauper. Of course they have a disposable income. We do know the USA has its faults and certainly dislike what’s happening now, but unless UK government advises against all travel, we are going. Mainly because we’ve paid for it. So the risks are what they are.

WorriedMutha · 03/03/2025 18:35

Let them make America great again with their own money. I'll be spending mine in Europe.

It isn’t though. There is the rest of the world to visit and there will be big losses to the US from tourist’s money.

The next G7 submit is in Canada in June - I hope he isn’t allowed into the country (convicted felons shouldn’t be crossing the border especially ones who want to take over Canada). If he comes hopefully lots of loud demonstrations!
I hope his invitation to see the King is also withdrawn - that would hurt him as Zelenskyy was warmly received.

As much as I loathe him, I do think the West has to play nice for so long as possible, even if its just to buy a bit more time to brace for conflict with the US.

I think someone from the press should ask him that very question. Honestly, I don't think the dud looks good for his age.

Vaccines made my children's life much more bearable. They only had to go through CP, which was horrible for my DD. By the time my DS got them, he also had strep so the Dr. prescribed an anti-viral and his illness wasn't bad at all, compared to my DDs. Now they have a vaccine for that.

I had Shingles when I was 45. I would not wish that on my worst enemy. Now they have a vaccine for that.

My DGD had RSV and then had to have breathing treatments for about two years after. Now they have a vaccine to save other babies from it.

My only negative on all vaccines is that I wish they could be staggered more for babies. It just seems like they get a lot each time. But then, they couldn't stagger them much to get full effectiveness, so what can be done?

I can't see the invitation for a state visit being withdrawn, much as I would like it to be. It would be a gross insult.

We need to keep on side with Trump for various reasons, including Ukraine. That's why the invitation for his second state visit was made (if I recall, each head of state only gets one state visit to the UK, so this is quite an honour for him - it was clearly intended to try and soften him up in his attitude to the UK.)

I laughed when it was clear that he couldn't read the letter from the King that Starmer gave him and so he asked Starmer to read it out. I assume it's because he would have needed reading glasses to read it and he's too vain to be seen wearing them in public!

I agree about Canada. The State visit to the UK won’t be withdrawn until efforts to keep the prick onside in NATO and some weapons in Ukraine. I’m no Royalist, but the King is being very useful in this and it was good to see him hosting Zelenskyy in his private residence yesterday.

Your forecast matches exactly with the recent news that more trees are to be felled for timber.
