Have to be honest since trump won i wasn't going anyway. But anyone cancelling or going elsewhere?
I have a big birthday this year, I would go to the garbage dump rather than support America,/musk in any way. I know therwmis at least half of America that doesn't.support this shxt and for them I am sorry but for the republicans too spineless and self interested to resist their dictator.trump...not one iota of sympathy for the rising prices loss of Medicaid or medicare.

YABU ..to cancel/Not go
YANBU...wouldn't touch it with a bargepole

I'm not saying it's pointless at all, I'm all for standing up for what you believe in but it is hypocritical to say you won't go somewhere on holiday because of their government, human rights etc whilst happily travelling to other countries or buying products from them who have equally bad and often worse laws.
There are posters on here saying they've got holidays booked to the states so will go this time but won't go after that...so clearly they aren't really that bothered or they'd cancel the trip and take the hit on the money.

I also don't think that saying because something has been run for centuries in the same way means its OK.

Have any/many posters said that they're not going to the US because of its human rights record? I don't think so, and feel like this has been clarified several times on the thread already?

Trump is waging a trade war on Canada, and threatening to annex us, which is why I'm boycotting US goods and travel.

Tariffs are in the pipeline for at least the EU (which would indirectly hurt the UK economy) and he is undermining European security by his appeasement of Putin (and threats to invade Denmark).

I don't think it's in the West's interest for people to give more money to the US than they need to (particularly if an economic dip increases the chances of Trump adjusting his foreign policy).

But you don’t know that people who don’t go to the US are the same people who go to other corrupt countries. You are just using that argument so you can insinuate that people who boycott The US are hypocrites and not as enlightened as they think. .

Someone literally a few messages up said they weren't going for that reason. So have others I've seen.

To be honest, it's pretty easy to say you're not going to choose to go on holiday somewhere, that's actually pretty expensive to go to now anyway, because of their government and leader. I'd have much more respect for people that had booked holidays there then cancelled them as a few here have.
Equally you also have no idea whether these people have said they are no longer going on a trip to the states whilst also cracking on using/buying American goods and lining the pockets of those they hate.
Maintain a standard is all I'm saying!

WorriedMutha · 04/03/2025 17:58

Some seem to be saying that because we can't implement a boycott perfectly across countries, companies or sectors, it is a pointless exercise. There were other bad examples when we were all boycotting South Africa. It still matters.
As consumers, it is the only option at our disposal to register our disapproval of the US.
As an arch remainer, I would never spend money in Wetherspoons or Next or buy a Dyson. You might think that's petty and start whatabouting X Y or Z. I don't care.
My money my choice and America can make itself great again with its own fucking money.

Ontario just announce that they will issue a 25% Export Tax on electricity sold to the US. That will hurt them!

I think both you and @Bumble6 are not really in disagreement. Some people are avoiding about the US because it’s at the forefront of their minds, but don’t think before traveling to other countries. Many of us are avoiding the US and we also take a principled position on other nations.

Not a Doug Ford fan in general, but loving his response on the tariffs.

I bet there are plenty of federal Conservatives who wish he, and not Pouilievre, were leading the party.

I could become his fan! He’s cancelled contracts with Musk's Starlink and banned US companies from government contracts!

ForeverLoveCeltic · 04/03/2025 22:47

What basic healthcare did you mean?

deeahgwitch · 05/03/2025 09:07

If someone wants to take a principled stance for or against something that's up to them.
Every little thing makes a difference.

U.S. electricity exports to Canada have increased since September 2023 - U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA)

Don't feel like I'm being controlled, it is my choice to not go. It will likely make not one iota of difference to America but I feel to not give one cent to the USA at the moment. With every day since I added the original post with all that has happened since, it has only added to my feeling of not wanting to go anywhere near it. I was curious if others felt the same.

America at present feels, to me, like it is turning into a Nazi state, and I just don't want to -support' that in any way.

I'm.not here condemning any one for going nor am i cheering anyone for not going, it is a personal choice. Based on the replies I'm not alone though.

I love the US and go most years but I have nothing planned for the next 4…

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 07/03/2025 09:31

My son is on a school trip there in the summer, I am really quite unsettled about it to be honest. Also we were going to take my older son to NY for his 21st but that plan has been put on hold.

Mauro711 · 07/03/2025 09:50

@Petuniaspetal actually it seems every little helps. I read in the news here in Sweden this morning that so far this year bookings for travel to the US from Sweden is down by 30%. Most of that period was before the crazy twerp got even crazier. I know that Sweden has quite a small population but if this is happening here I am sure similar is happening in more populated countries too.

I've always wanted to go to Nantucket, Cape Cod , The Hamptons it has always appealed to me. I am 60 now and in 4 years obv 64, although I don't consider it old, I know that my chances of getting there are diminishing each year. There is also the likelihood that the republicans, who have already made I roads to do this, will .are it so that they will 'win' the next election and whether its trump or not, his policies will remain. Its no coincidence that applications from Americans for UK citizenship are significantly up also.

The expectation is that the wanker JD Pence will come after Trump 🤦‍♀️🤢

While I agree that that is the case especially if for whatever reason trump doesn't last the distance, trump certainly doesn't like that being discussed on his watch. When asked recently if Vance was going to be his successor it was a firm 'no'.

Trump doesn't want to be the lame duck president in his last couple of years after the midterms, especially if his approval ratings don't improve. If the republicans do what they're good at and cheat to set it up so trump doesn't lose, then we could be in for a third term trump. They have already set the ball rolling for a potential third term and based on the last number of elections they have manipulated voting so it favours them. So anything is possible.
Vance is chomping at the bit because trumps demise is the most likely way he will get the presidency. God help the world in either scenario.

We have a major trip planned for 2 years. It’s mostly Canada with some travel up along the coast from Boston. I’m very tempted to only go to Canada. This has been delayed from 2020 when we obviously couldn’t travel, then the dog was too sick for us to leave the country, then we got puppies. We’ll be moving area next year so won’t be going then.

Another reason to not go to the states. They're also very sensitive about not liking the orange one. So be careful about your online /social media comments if less than favourable toward trump.

If you start censoring your own speech through fear while there is still free speech, then that’s a very concerning course of action.

Don’t do that.
