I will never, ever buy a product owned by Elon Musk.

‘foreigners have very, very good reason not to visit the UK,’

if they’re American, let’s hope they don’t.

I’m 100% behind Ukraine but given Trump is the most powerful man in the world and Ukraines only hope, VZ should have played the game a bit better. Not exactly a world class diplomat is he. We be booking our bi-annual Florida trip for the summer soon 😀

Maybe VZ wants to be allowed into NATO?

Wasn't it Musk who brought back internet service to Ukraine and all the equipment needed? And power adapters for cigarette lighters, solar/battery packs and generators?

Why yes, yes he did.

Suggestions for what? Maybe you could try and make yourself clear?

Anyone else struggling with my post?

Yeps still off to a booked and paid for trip to NY..

You know, foreigners have very, very good reason not to visit the UK, judging it by the standards that are being applied to the US. The UK has a deep and long history of child abuse, much of which is still going on. Child sex trafficking rings are/were in dozens of towns, the authorities knew, and did nothing. See Rotherham and others.

In addition to that, almost a thousand people were wrongly accused and had their lives destroyed by the Post Office.

Then there's the police undercover scandal, where police lied to targets, slept with them, and had children with them.

There's the BBC, who covered up child abusers like Savile and Rolf Harris for decades.

Then there's Deepcut, Windrush, and horrific social care failures that have ended with children's deaths.

Foreigners reading about all these things might reasonably conclude that Britain is a disgusting, nasty little island and decline to spend their tourist money here. And I bet the people on here insulting the US wouldn't like that, especially as the UK economy is far more dependent on foreign tourism than the US is.

Judgement goes both ways, and people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

But the UK is, in most instances, recognising that there were problems, lack of safeguards, etc. But we are trying to do better.
The US has elected a leadership that, in a very short space of time, made so many people's lives so much worse - including their own zealous followers.
Health care is in danger, pregnant women can't guarantee to get any care they may need (and in a worst case scenario could be accused of procuring an abortion, if they lost their pregnancy).
Air safety has been jeopardised due to firing staff and Elon Musk insisting that his own air traffic control system should be used instead of the one that has gone through a stringent procurement process.
I could go on.
I understand that it was less than 50% of the voting population which erected Trump, but the other 60+% need to take responsibility for either not voting, or not persuading others.
The bottom line is that a reduction in tourist revenue and foreign currency will hit the USA where it hurts in the pocket. Hopefully accelerating the recession and turning popular opinion against the current 'rulers'.
It's a shame as I have been to the USA several times and would like to return, but not while Elon Musk is in charge.

I just booked a family holiday in the US for Easter. I'm super excited. I can't lie but I was actually MORE motivated to book due to the Golden Age of Trump. But I know that's a supremely unfashionable view on Mumsnet.

In all honestly it's rather a stupid view. Are you not even remotely concerned about what he's doing?

ZanyOP · 02/03/2025 19:33

I wouldn’t cancel a trip already booked and paid but we are making alternative arrangements for future travel to avoid anything US related, whilst acknowledging that there are plenty of Americans who are absolutely horrified by what is going on in their country.

LookingforMaryPoppins · 02/03/2025 11:20

They already are, analysis shows there was a net outflow of 10,800 high-net worth individuals from the UK in 2024
https://moneyweek.com/personal-finance/tax/where-rich-relocate-to

Luckily, the rich can pretty much go where they want because they would meet the immigration policies of pretty much any country they picked. They just need to decide what kind of weather they would like.

I would imagine they would go somewhere that the tax burden isn't so high.

cinders222 · 02/03/2025 19:41

I am going to Florida in October and won't be cancelling. Not sure I would have booked if current situation was happening when I booked. But won't be cancelling and looking forward to it still

I’m not cancelling as have no booking… but equally would be very disinclined to visit atm… and I have family and friends there.
some are in Vermont and very happy to see the JD Vance has been hounded out. Go Vermont!

What a halfwit you and many others are on here, now if any would be the best time to go as it'll be a damn sight safer than when the other halfwit was in power.

It shocks me, most women are like sheep following the hurd, look up all the information rather than what the mainstream media tells you, use your own mind and you will see the truth.

We are using our own minds and the word is herd, not Hurd 🙄

That's what the mainstream dictionary wants you to think.

I don't hold an entire country responsible for the behaviour of it's political elite. I'd love to visit the US. If ever I were fortunate enough to go, I'd still want to experience the natural beauty and culture there.

I agree, it’s also extremely unlikely that you will personally bump into Trump while on holiday 🤗

No I'm not concerned by Trump. I wanted him to win. And by and large I support everything he's done and is promising to do, with slight reservations about his views on Israel / Gaza.

I'm excited to revisit America again (haven't been there since 2019) because there is an energy and positivity about the place. Obviously Democrats and lefties are demoralised but the majority - who voted for Trump remember - feel hopeful that they now have a President who actually gives a shit about them. If only we had that here instead of virtue signalling politicians spunking our money up a wall at every opportunity before reminding us about the "Black Hole"

Do you think people are also cancelling trips to the UK now that we have such an awful government?

They certainly were under the Brexit Tories and the cr*p that came with those horrific years

We don't have an awful government. You might not like labour in power. However, we at least have normal, governing government back.

A government that can speak on the world stage and are not systematically making us look like fools and an embarrassment

Andylion · 02/03/2025 20:00

Our supermarkets are actively labelling Canadian food.

@Parker231 , my Loblaws is not doing this. I am so ticked off. I'll have to check Metro and see if they do.

What, like removing women's rights, and putting you at risk of arrest if you miscarry? Like hollowing out the National Parks Service so much that much of the staggering natural beauty in the US will become threatened and inaccessible? Like making it almost impossible to get prescribed anti-depressants? Like making healthcare even less affordable for anyone who doesn't have insurance, where even a broken leg can bankrupt you? Like making it more likely that kids will get shot in schools? Like shitting all over international diplomacy and cosying up to Putin, making the world an even more unstable place? Like slapping tariffs on just about everything, so that even basic groceries shoot up in price and become unaffordable? Like letting Elon Musk make absolutely colossal cuts to government agencies, so that now there's practically no oversight or regulation of public services? Like getting rid of all equality and diversity practices, so if you're black or disabled, it's even harder to get a job than it was before?

You support all of that?

What an obnoxious human being you are.

VeryQuaintIrene · 02/03/2025 20:18

@scatterolight You really think Trump gives a shit about anything except his own bank balance? You are deluded.

Out of genuine curiousity can you point out anything he's done since he came to power that helps the people in any tangible way? He's been busy implementing his expansionist plans on taking over countries and appeasing Putin. Other than that he's empowering Musk to gut federal agencies, and implementing tariffs that increase prices for consumers. What has he done that would make anyone think he "gives a shit" about everyday Americans?
