Petuniaspetal · 28/02/2025 20:24

Have to be honest since trump won i wasn't going anyway. But anyone cancelling or going elsewhere?
I have a big birthday this year, I would go to the garbage dump rather than support America,/musk in any way. I know therwmis at least half of America that doesn't.support this shxt and for them I am sorry but for the republicans too spineless and self interested to resist their dictator.trump...not one iota of sympathy for the rising prices loss of Medicaid or medicare.

YABU ..to cancel/Not go
YANBU...wouldn't touch it with a bargepole

Correct.

Good. There are a lot of people who like to shout about how they are boycotting this and that but it's usually just whatever is in the latest news. It was boycotting everything Israeli a few weeks ago, now the U.S.
I have a lot of respect for people who really follow through with truly boycotting things and places because it must be incredibly hard and limiting to do it.
The positive is that the way Europe is going too the British tourist etc economy is going to be booming.

Halfemptyhalfling · 01/03/2025 07:30

People in UK less likely to afford holidays anyway due to Brexit and Putin. Trump might slap on tariffs at any point so worth saving rather than spending.

Richer reform supporters might be more likely to go

Matronic6 · 01/03/2025 07:31

We went in 2019 and saw a man pull out a gun on the street and decided we would never be back unless the gun laws changed. There have been 51 mass shootings in America this year so far. There is zero chance I would bring my family there I just do not feel it's a safe place.

Right, but it says historical. Surely all those towns in deep blue states like MA are not so racist now that a non-white person would be at any risk visiting? (I'd still stay away from the red states though.)

Half the US did not vote for him. So I think not going there because of him is insane. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face. Remember, it's also a country that voted him out, and also a country who voted for a black president not so long ago.

It’s not cutting off my nose to spite my face. I simply don’t want to be there at the moment in such an atmosphere, even though I’m well aware that half the country doesn’t support him. And that does appear to include some MAGA people, who are only now realising that Trump’s policies are hurting them.

Definitely. Many European countries now have right-wing leaders. Hopefully the UK economy will benefit from more people holidaying at home. After all, the UK is an incredible country with much to offer.

Nope. Off to San Antonio in may(holiday)St augustine in July(work), Scottsdale and fort worth (both work) in September and SLC(holidsy) in December. Looking forward to all.

I am up in the Midwest and I am so jealous that you are going to St. Augustine. I went there when I drove my Mom down to FL for the winter, and it was so pretty! We went and saw the Fountain of Youth. It didn't work on us.😆😉

It's definitely a tinder-box at this point in time, especially after today's utter disgrace at the White House. I can see why people would feel uneasy about going there right now, with Trump marauding around like King Kong. No one wants to get caught in the cross-fire of a potentially violent protest or a bomb.

No she won't, she'll always remember her mother taking a trip to NYC away from her! Great 21st present!

How do you know her mother took the trip away from her? How do you know the daughter wasn’t part of the decision?

Her daughter might very well have preferred to go somewhere else.

When you say pull it out, he aimed it at someone?

There are dangerous parts of the US and also very safe parts.

It would be really interesting to hear from a UK travel agent or tour operator about whether bookings to the US are down in any significant numbers.

This is from a month ago

https://www.travelandtourworld.com/news/article/donald-trump-re-election-triggers-decline-in-us-tourism-uk-tourists-and-canadians-reconsider-travel-everything-you-need-to-know-about/

I'd assume that the last week's events will have added significant fuel.

I really doubt that. Young people are dying to go to cool places like NYC.

The only country in the World where school shootings are just one of those things that happens. 51 mass shooting its only 1st March...

Decorhate · 01/03/2025 07:40

I had planned to go later his year - mainly to visit elderly relatives. I’m not likely to go ahead now, partly because one of the people I wanted to visit will be in Europe during the summer so will see them then.

But in any case, I would definitely be holding off for now to see how the situation develops. More from the point of view of possible civil unrest. I grew up during the Reagan era and felt reluctant to visit then but spent a few months in the US living and working and it was a very positive experience - most of the people I met were lovely. It made me realise that there are good, likeminded people everywhere and you can’t assume a leader speaks for the whole country.

Many young people have a strong social conscience. Sometimes much more so than older adults.

RestlessSparrow · 01/03/2025 07:42

No plans to go there, but what I have done is delete my Facebook, Insta and Amazon Prime and currently moving from WhatsApp. Never signed up to Twitter

Er, no.

He is ?

Heh

Honestly, you sound really deluded. There is far more to the world than the US.

40 people dead so far from shootings in the US in 2025. Clearly, the 51 mass shootings weren't very mass. Of course, gun violence is always wrong, and there are WAY too many guns in the US and WAY too many gun deaths, but there's also so much hysteria. There are 300 million people in the US going about their business, and 40 have been killed this year by guns. The chances of being shot anywhere, let alone at school, are absolutely minute. One in millions.

Yes? Never been to dubai and nor do I plan to. Likewise never been to Russia. It's not appealing visiting a country where you so wholly disagree with a lot of their ideology and culture?

What about Italy, Hungary or the Czech Rep? What about China?

Deerrobin · 01/03/2025 07:47

I wouldn’t travel there at the moment. Not as an economic or political protest (though I am horrified by what is going on in that respect). I wouldn’t plan to go now as I think the risks of dangerous situations unfolding, either as a result of civil unrest or consequences of policy decisions taking, is too high at the moment.

(For full disclosure I used to live in the US and have traveled/work there on and off for years)

MyDeftDuck · 01/03/2025 07:48

I can't afford to go any more.........Starmer and all his bloody cronies have put a stop to me having any spare cash for holidays.......can hardly afford to heat the house let alone buy the food to create a decent meal. And don't get me started on taxing pensions.😡

I am not deluded, thank you. I am balanced. Yes, the current WH is an utter disgrace, but there's more to life and to the US than politics. And NYC is a wonderful place and an education for someone as young as 20, no matter who's in the WH. I think it's crazy to take such an experience away from them.

There are many other places they can go, its trading one experience for another.
