I'd be fascinated to see how many people posting here have actually watched the full press conference.

Zelensky really couldn't have played this any worse. He directly started the confrontation with JD Vance with his response to a fairly inconsequential remark about diplomacy, and it went downhill rapidly from there. It was completely unecessary. He can't change who the POTUS is for the next 4 years, and needed to confront this reality by managing Trump in a way that benefits Ukraine.

IMO he missed a golden opportunity to manipulate the situation and put Trump's entire reputation and legacy on the line with regards to future "security guarantees", on camera, in front of the entire world.

He should have gone out all guns blazing in terms of effusive praise and thanks for Trump, his administration and the American people for their support, and their prioritisation of helping them end the war. He had 45 minutes to make Trump feel as good about himself as he possibly could, get everyone in the room worked up and jingoistic. You can do this without agreeing with any of his politics whatsoever. He's like a 5 year old child and as easily manipulated as one with the correct strategy.

Once he'd got the room onside then he could have quite simply addressed the security guarantees that Trump had stated about 5 times during the conference he didn't want to talk about.

"In terms of the security guarantees we have been asked about earlier. Let me ask you all a question. And I'll let you into a secret now, its a rhetorical one.. Once we have a shared and substantial economic interest in maximising the extraction of our vital natural resources...

Does any person in this room, or even the planet, think that Donald Trump; the man sitting next to me, the most powerful man on earth, is the kind of man who will let someone come and take these from him? Run tanks and drones through the infrastructure his money has been invested in? Let the lives of American people he has trusted to do this for his country come to harm whilst doing so?

Once this deal is done, it's just a matter of ironing out the specifics."

Job done. Communications from diplomats involved clearly imply this is how the deal was being thought of, so to come out and say it like that puts him exactly where you need.

Clearly you didn't watch and see step by step what transpired. Zelensky came out with his emotional bull and that started the confrontation.

Yes I did watch the full video.

Yes I totally agree that Trump responds like a child. The whole King Charles invitation was part of that. I still feel that even if Z had taken that route, they were primed to attack him. They had a plan, a pre planned press question. It was all orchestrated to play their way .

Imagine sitting there. After 3 years of war against a much larger aggressor and being told off for saying that the aggressor started it - which they did - and can’t be trusted - which they can’t. And then some fucking plant ‘reporter’ asks you why aren’t you wearing a suit…
Vance is a petty little arsehole and Trump is a petulant spoiled child with paper thin skin.

The thing is, we all know how the war started. Nato said it would not expand East and low and behold Ukraine in the mix, Russia saw red and here we are.

How many times are we going to keep harping on about it or do we want to get round the table and come to some peace agreement.

If the stance is, Russia started the war so we are not going to have peace negotiations then so be it. European countries can keep funding the war. The UK has just handed Zelensky a few extra £billions so can all the other European countries that wish the war to continue. Why do you care so much about Trump America? Get on with it and put your money where your mouth is. Fight to the end, and let's see in a year's time if Ukraine retains more of what it has right now and how many more bodies have piled up on both sides.

Walkaround · 02/03/2025 10:14

Odin2018 · 02/03/2025 09:49

What did I say? NATO said they wouldn't extend East so why is anyone surprised at this war. Trump has never said Russia never invaded Ukraine. Russia is coming to the table, so why does Trump have to keep going on about Russia? Zelensky won't come to the table. So......
So if Zelensky doesn't want to come to the table, that's up to him and Europe can continue to fund the war. Why is that so difficult? Who needs America as Trump is soooooo bad! So go win the war without him and stop moaning about Trump. Europe is big enough and between the countries wealthy enough to do so. Get on with it. Sprnd, spend, spend Europe. Who needs Trump and America, eh!

Edited

Last time I looked, Ukraine wasn’t actually a member of NATO. There’s something very odd, though, about refusing to let a democratic country apply for membership of any organisation it pleases, even if refused. Anyone would think Ukraine felt Russia was a threat, not a friend. I wonder why? Maybe something to do with Putin’s refusal to recognise it as a separate, sovereign state?

Or... you had two other men in the room who at either time could have taken the heat out of this and ended the press conference, instead it went on and on. Russian television invited to see it.

These men represent massive power. And what we all saw was how small brained they are.

I feel the same need to do something but unfortunately every aspect of our lives is linked to US tech, so I can't really see how you're going to escape that. Ready to give up Google? Microsoft? Apple?

I agree with you, going all in on a boycott is unlikely to be reasonable or possible and anyone who manages is to be applauded, but I’d be happy at switching 10%/20% of what I buy/use away from US products and services. If you look at that on a broader scale, if enough people did it, would it make a dent and indeed a point? It’ll make me feel better trying anyway.

Well when you consider trump spoke to putin a couple of days before and the Russia state media were LIVESTREAMING the events from the Whitehouse...it kinda makes you wonder. Especially when some American press weren't allowed in.

Why do people think the only way to treat Trump is to appease him, flatter him, make him feel special. He's a nasty bully, he's not the only head of state or president in the world, he has no remorse, tells lies, conveniently forgets what he says, why is he seen as the most important man in the world, he's a fucking idiot.

I never said Ukraine was a part of NATO They were having talks to do so when it was agreed NATO would not extend any further East, so, of course that set alarm bells off for Putin and we all know what happened next.

Considering Trump’s love of being on television and his overriding aim of being the star of The Trump Show Season 2, your comment is just simply adorable 🙄

🤣🤣Putin just wanted an excuse to take over a country he doesn’t recognise the legitimacy of in the first place. He thinks it’s his rightful territory. It’s patently clear no peace treaty will hold when that’s what the corrupt, criminal dictator and murderer next door thinks.

If everyone thinks he is an idiot then those countries don't have to do business with him. It's totally up to them what they do.
But governments work for the people, so regardless of their PERSONAL feelings about an individual, business is business.

Yes, quite!
Trump and Putin have supposedly come to a deal and Trump says Zelensky needs to trust the process because... it's Trump this time and this time Putin will keep to his word??? Firstly, Zelensky wasn't even party to this meeting and has he even been notified of what Putin has agreed to? What has Trump offered to Putin that will see him withdraw from Ukraine? How can anyone criticise Zelensky for insisting on certain guarantees? The reasoning that once US is in Ukraine mining their precious land materials Russia wouldn't dare to strike is ridiculous. Why was Russian tv in the Oval Office?
