How's the Chinese economy these days @bombastix ? It's been threatening to collapse for a while I thought?

Is it now? I think much is written in hope about how bad China is going to be, and its potential crises. Oddly enough they seem to be leading the world in trade in goods instead of the US anc have world beating tech on refinement of critical minerals on which the US cannot compete. Their universities are becoming internationally competitive to the US and the UK and their finances for green tech and resources are immaculate.

They are doing very well.

Once Hunter Biden's bathroom & bedroom were brought into it, I found it hard to follow.

Just catching up on this on the news and I'm absolutely flabbergasted. What the fuck am I watching?

From the belter at the back banging on about him not wearing a suit and then that stupid eejit declaring he should be thankful?!!

The belter at the back is apparently MT Green’s boyfriend. So no surprises there.

TheCatsTongue · 28/02/2025 22:47

Boycotts won't work but people want that as they don't have to spend money to boycott.

What people need to do is to write to their MPs to demand a further increase in defence spending, funded by tax rises on everyone, that way more military aid can be provided to Ukraine. Perhaps a war tax added onto everyone's wages and pensions?

If you want Ukraine to win you have to be prepared to spend money yourself.

Someone said above that we should cancel the state visit. I think it’s daft to talk about sticking two fingers up to the US, particularly if we disagree with how they’re conducting themselves with our allies. Now is the time to leverage any influence we can.

Yes, I understood what you were saying.

I'm just asking whether there is anything that Trump could do that would make you want to re-think?

violetsorrengail · 28/02/2025 22:49

Talking of China, I'm not convinced they want Russia doing a massive land grab with American backing. Will be interesting to see where they come down on this.

EsmaCannonball · 28/02/2025 22:49

Zelensky's outfits are like Winston Churchill and his siren suits. It's a good PR strategy. Trump is a man who goes about in a slogan baseball cap.

Sushiandunagi · 28/02/2025 22:50

I’m surprised not many people see it for what it is. The whole thing is planned. Trump is a businessman. Can you all not see what he’s doing?

It wouldn't surprise me if we start to see a rapprochement between Europe and China. Europe isn't strong enough to stand on its own, and China will no doubt see an opportunity.

The message from the US is: Nothing outside our borders is our problem. Why would they take part in anything? And probably the MAGA moms don't want their children to be part of it (which I can understand btw, but the protest could be so loud that it damages the movement).

It doesn't even make sense to avoid a deal and send Zelenskyy home: so far it's a great money maker for the companies who produce material and equipment, and once there is peace, investment funds will be set up and a lot of companies taking part in reconstruction. It would benefit the US economy, also after the war - if they were behaving like an actual ally - the Europeans would have bought a lot of equipment for their own military. Now they will be looking elsewhere.
It's actually a bad deal for the US.

The companies which provide the material are not the ones who are not getting paid. The financial support is a grant or a debt from the US - as there were several deals they were probably a combination of both. And the material that the US sent forward to Ukraine needs to be replenished at home, too.

A lot of US companies earned a great deal of money through the war and there are future options, too. It doesn't seem that the bully boys thought of that, though they always praise themselves for their business instincts. Vance was an investment banker. Can't have been him who did the research before deals.

Americans have had enough of wars for profit. And yes, we really do want to let the rest of the world get along without us. We really just want to be left alone. We don't want to see any more flag-draped coffins coming home. We don't want hundreds of billions of our dollars spent defending people who hate us.

The US economy has expanded 34% since 2019 and now stands at 29 trillion USD. We are food and energy independent. We are second after China in rare earths. We are second only to Russia in number of nuclear weapons. Our tech industry is second to none and we have more startups than the rest of the world combined. We're building an iron dome missile system over the whole US to protect us from missile and drone strikes.

Yes, please, as a retired American military officer, I say let the killing stop.

I can see any number of possibilities for what might be going on. I don't think anyone actually knows for sure.

I hope the UK/ France/Germany/ Australia etc all come out in support of Zelensky and start making Trump's life difficult.

Did anyone see what John Caudwell said on Question Time last night? I thought his theory about the US, Russia and China ganging up together to take everything over was chillingly accurate.

I fear for Zelensky flying all over the place with Trump stirring up hate amongst the nutters.

It really is like 1984 isn't it. How unpleasantly prescient Orwell was.

Perhaps the state visit could go ahead and Charles/Camilla/William/Kate could give him a public dressing down on camera?

I really hope at least Charles was going to lecture him about climate change but this would be exceptional!

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 28/02/2025 22:54

I hope London comes up with another protest like Baby Trump.

Eugh. I don't want our King giving him a state visit either. The whole thing stinks.

TiredCatLady · 28/02/2025 22:55

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. This harks back to 1938. Except this time they’re even more batshit and have functional nuclear weapons.

EsmaCannonball · 28/02/2025 22:55

When the rules based world order is replaced by the new (evil) world order and China and Russia are running things, the likes of Trump and Musk will be totally insulated from the fallout. The average American will not be. We are heading for a world of an autocratic super-rich and everyone else being a powerless service class.

U.S. debt-to-GDP ratio 123%
China's debt to GDP ratio 83.4%

China is doing better. That is not an excuse to start a war.

bombastix · 28/02/2025 22:58

@LifeExperience - but you have a few problems too. One of those is that you can't exploit critical minerals like China can. The US doesn't know how to do it. If the Chinese licensed those exports your tech industries would have a big problem.

I can see Trump doesn't want dependencies. But tariffing your allies while China takes over more and more world trade means your self sufficiency project had better not depend on them.

And Chinese overproduction means the US cannot compete on cars, manufacturing or green tech. I guess the US is just saying that it will settle for less influence and a more insular economy.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 28/02/2025 22:59

We are seeing their true colours, in case we needed any further proof. I hope Charles rescinds his invitation to Balmoral. The crowds will be out to throw things at them.

I was just contemplating how hard it would be to get close enough to lob a large milkshake

Thanks @bombastix . It was a genuine question btw ☺️
