I hope the UK/ France/Germany/ Australia etc all come out in support of Zelensky and start making Trump's life difficult.

Did anyone see what John Caudwell said on Question Time last night? I thought his theory about the US, Russia and China ganging up together to take everything over was chillingly accurate.

I fear for Zelensky flying all over the place with Trump stirring up hate amongst the nutters.

I’m American (dual national, though thankfully haven’t lived there for 15 years). I don’t know a single American who voted for this nonsense. I also don’t know a single American who thinks any of this isn’t as embarrassing as all the rest of us do. Obviously, there are plenty of crazy MAGAs out there who love it (frankly not friends with anyone like that!).

But there is a lot of dissent and resistance in America that isn’t being covered by the mainstream media (who are kinda still trying to placate Trump). And there is wide acceptance of likely voter fraud, which Trump and Musk have widely hinted at. All this bullshit isn’t as supported in America as non-Americans seem to believe, but realistically, the average person can’t really do much against an authoritarian regime, same as how Putin stays in power despite being an absolute cretin. Elections are rigged, people get paid off, dissent is being silenced, including violently.

The curious thing for me is the apparent silence from other American politicians.

Where are all the democrats and why aren't they speaking out?

MrsPernicious · 28/02/2025 22:29

Hunter Biden's laptop?

Has everyone read a transcript of the mad press conference?

This is the spheres of influence theory which means neither China, Russia or the US will bother each other and instead have aligned areas of influence over countries.

Tbh it's all bollocks because China doesn't have to bother. Without China Russia would have been nowhere in the last three years and the Russian economy is a basketcase. Still they all have huge militaries and Europe doesn't.

About time we did.

tobee · 28/02/2025 22:31

I don't think that there's any evidence to say that Zelensky "isn't a good person in a moral sense" @LoztWorld

I'm vaguely wondering if we can use the offer of the State Visit as some sort of bargaining chip with Trump. Carefully tempt him that it will happen sooner or biglier if he is a bit more mindful of the rest of the world, not caving in to Putin etc etc. Hmm...

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 28/02/2025 22:23

But do you think we should stay close to the US at all costs? Do you have any red lines at all that you wouldn't be prepared to cross?

No, not at all costs – I didn’t say anything even similar in the post?

I feel quite sick about it

Edited

Same, I felt queasy watching it

tobee · 28/02/2025 22:34

Hopefully the US isn't directly murdering their home grown opponents like Russia does @mindutopia ??

sugarhockeyicedtea · 28/02/2025 22:34

Just catching up on this on the news and I'm absolutely flabbergasted. What the fuck am I watching?

From the belter at the back banging on about him not wearing a suit and then that stupid eejit declaring he should be thankful?!!

Clearly, the bullying behaviour of Trump and Vance today isn't enough to make you question our continuing alliance with the US. I'm just interested as to how far things would have to go to make you change your mind?

tobee · 28/02/2025 22:35

How's the Chinese economy these days @bombastix ? It's been threatening to collapse for a while I thought?

Thisandthatandthensome · 28/02/2025 19:13

Trump's word is not worth the breath he spends on it.

Vile man. Bully.

What a ridiculous show. Tell us your thankful more says Vance. Vance is a complete twat.

They are in charge of the US. GOD HELP EVERYONE.

Give us your minerals.

Give Putin your land.

No security agreement.

A stupid journalist asking why he doesn't wear a suit! Wtf have I just watched

Exactly!! Did Trump really think he could just get him to agree??
If the USA was in a war would they just agree to a settlement that gave some of their states to the invading country?? Like hell would they?
It was like watching school yard bullies who shout louder when they don't get their own way!

businessflop25 · 28/02/2025 22:36

Fucking hell! What have I I just watched? There literally are no words for what has happened today. I'm frightened tonight. Frightened for what this means for Ukraine. Frightened for Moldova, Lithuania and the Baltic states and indeed for our own security.

I think that's overstating the importance of this to him. It certainly won't 'trump' whatever putin has in him,

Perhaps the state visit could go ahead and Charles/Camilla/William/Kate could give him a public dressing down on camera?

Or Anne can shrug and shake her head as she did when she was called over by HM to meet him!

Do we think that Russia was waiting for the idiot president to return. So he could pull his strings and create a new world order.

"There are also multiple longer-term contracts between arms manufacturers and the US to send weapons systems to Ukraine. Those contracts were announced under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) and were designed to provide weapons to Ukraine in the future

EddyF · 28/02/2025 22:40

This is heartbreaking.

Some part of the American people are not educated in the history between US and Russia.
Please Google the Cold War. Russia hates the US more than any other country in the world.
Their game plan is working now; American is isolating themselves from allies and will be alone when they will pounce.

Secondly anyone that does not understand why the US sponsored Ukraine in previous administration needs to Google the US Russia and Ukraine nuke peace treaty. Ukraine had the most nukes in the world and GAVE THE NUKES to the US in exchange for defense from the US if they were ever attacked. Russia also got nukes and promised the same, but they broke the treaty.

And that's why THE US had a legal responsibility to defend Ukraine. If you ask what US got from Ukraine the answer is THEIR NUKES....

United front and united strength is the only way to end the war and get Putin to retreat. He loves this discourse. Europe and US are supposed to be allies least we forget.

EsmaCannonball · 28/02/2025 22:40

BlitheSpirits · 28/02/2025 20:39

I don't know how else the Ukraine/Russia war was ever going to end without Ukraine capitulating though?

Well, the Western World could have given the Ukrainians the planes, tanks and weaponry they really needed in the first place. They could have been brave enough to let Ukraine join NATO.

All that fear about what Russia might do if we helped Ukraine too much and now Russia has the upper hand anyway.

Oh god, now Trump is on the news speaking to reporters about peace and wanting to stop Russian and Ukrainian soldiers dying. Doesn't he realise there are much worse things than being at war and the opposite of war isn't necessarily peace? Letting an aggressor do whatever they want is not peace.

kattaduck · 28/02/2025 22:41

Fran2023 · 28/02/2025 21:59

Clearly you aren’t aware of the protests, the campaigns, Bernie Sanders’ efforts, the Democratic representatives standing up and speaking out. There is a whole grassroots movement called 50501, started at the beginning of this month which is very, very vocal and organising protests all the time. Today is the economic blackout - no buying, no using social media, as well as longer term consumer boycotts (I’ve joined myself for the UK). Our media are barely covering it. US media is almost silent on how hard citizens are fighting. Join us!

While all those efforts are admirable, they are also really minimal.
My own country manages to get about half a million people to march against fascists who aren't even part of the government. I bloody well expect Americans to do the same to take it seriously.

violetsorrengail · 28/02/2025 22:41

@MrsFrumble thanks for the link, just watched it. Can't say it made me feel much better apart from listening to sensible and decent people who are also worried. The five eyes stuff was very interesting and did make me think about how far the CIA would stand behind this if it switched to a Russia alliance. On a personal level for this on the ground it seems unthinkable, surely a majority would choose the right thing over loyalty to this regime.

Someone said above that we should cancel the state visit. I think it’s daft to talk about sticking two fingers up to the US, particularly if we disagree with how they’re conducting themselves with our allies. Now is the time to leverage any influence we can.
