I agree with your feeling of it being premeditated. Did you hear Lindsey Graham when questioned? He said he met Zelensky before the press conference and advised him not to rise to the bait, to get it over with and then meet behind closed doors to agree the deal or words to that effect. He knew beforehand what Vance and Trump were planning.

Seems bizarre coming from him. Hes on Twitter and the news channels saying how amazing Vance is.

EsmaCannonball · 28/02/2025 21:46

Trump makes out he's such a great deal-maker (despite all the bankruptcies). Anyone could cut a deal if they are prepared to do whatever Russia wants.

The way he talks about running countries as if it is just like running a business is pathetic.

He knows Zelensky well and has been to Ukraine many times. Strange times.

Perhaps the state visit could go ahead and Charles/Camilla/William/Kate could give him a public dressing down on camera?

I am betting that there will be a photo op with William and he will not be wearing a suit. Like the Queen and her brooches.

Bringonchristmas36 · 28/02/2025 21:50

100% bullies

EsmaCannonball · 28/02/2025 21:52

'I don't want advantage, I want peace.'

Yeah, great negotiation tactic there, Donald.

What can we all do? It’s desperate and terrifying. Even Trident can’t be used without US software support. These are deranged maniacs. Would not be surprised if America were to formally ally itself (it’s already made its allegiance clear) in war with Russia against Western Europe. Why would Putin stop with Ukraine, when he knows NATO means nothing to Trump?

Edited

What of France’s nukes?

PerkingFaintly · 28/02/2025 21:55

The Trump statement on Truth Social makes a lot more sense if you replace the word "Peace" with "capitulation".

I'm utterly appalled at what I've just seen. I just don't understand why Americans seem to be indifferent to the way their president is acting.
Congress, senators, I've seen nothing that condemns this behaviour.

Clearly you aren’t aware of the protests, the campaigns, Bernie Sanders’ efforts, the Democratic representatives standing up and speaking out. There is a whole grassroots movement called 50501, started at the beginning of this month which is very, very vocal and organising protests all the time. Today is the economic blackout - no buying, no using social media, as well as longer term consumer boycotts (I’ve joined myself for the UK). Our media are barely covering it. US media is almost silent on how hard citizens are fighting. Join us!

Action man credentials 🤣
He's a total conman, even his own people don't like him and he's going to be exposed for what he really is.

Like all powerful people Zelensky is compromised to some degree, and I believe has been investigated for corruption in the past.

He probably isn’t a very good person in a moral sense. Perhaps, yes, he’s a conman in some regards. I don’t like when people fawn over him excessively, which they often do.

But he’s undeniably brave. And he has performed far better than most leaders could under such unimaginable pressure.

That makes him more impressive than either Trump or Vance surely, who are manifestly corrupt and immoral yet have few positive traits to balance that out.

MelodyBlue · 28/02/2025 22:04

Felt surreal to watch! It was supposed to be a serious political meeting. Trump and Vince behaviour was unacceptable by any standards.
What this childish 'thank us'' remark was all about. Nightmare really.
Felt like it was all planned and pre-mediated.

Is it possible there could actually be a world war with the uk and europe on one side and russia and the US (and maybe even China depending on how trump develops that relationship) on the other?

Is that a mad idea or something that could actually happen?

The message from the US is: Nothing outside our borders is our problem. Why would they take part in anything? And probably the MAGA moms don't want their children to be part of it (which I can understand btw, but the protest could be so loud that it damages the movement).

It doesn't even make sense to avoid a deal and send Zelenskyy home: so far it's a great money maker for the companies who produce material and equipment, and once there is peace, investment funds will be set up and a lot of companies taking part in reconstruction. It would benefit the US economy, also after the war - if they were behaving like an actual ally - the Europeans would have bought a lot of equipment for their own military. Now they will be looking elsewhere.
It's actually a bad deal for the US.

The companies which provide the material are not the ones who are not getting paid. The financial support is a grant or a debt from the US - as there were several deals they were probably a combination of both. And the material that the US sent forward to Ukraine needs to be replenished at home, too.

A lot of US companies earned a great deal of money through the war and there are future options, too. It doesn't seem that the bully boys thought of that, though they always praise themselves for their business instincts. Vance was an investment banker. Can't have been him who did the research before deals.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 28/02/2025 22:08

Well, once JD Von Ribbentop has finished fluttering his eyelashes, they'll be mightily pissed off when Putin doesn't share any of the materials and steamrollers straight through Ukraine and other countries bordering Russia - Turkiye is going to be the subject of mentionitis at this rate.

tobee · 28/02/2025 22:09

Surely Princess Anne could tell Trump to "naff off!" @WhitegreeNcandle

Showing my age there.

lifeonmars100 · 28/02/2025 22:14

I have been thinking about the planned state visit. I think it should be cancelled, I cannot envisage how it can go ahead now. What on earth would happen out on our streets when/if that orange monster shows up, I am sure that they would be packed with hostile crowds and rightly so. Charlie Boy should be sending him a note telling him to do one.

Thanks for this, I'm glad to hear at least some people are protesting, boycotting, doing what they can. I'll look up 50501

EsmaCannonball · 28/02/2025 22:15

Strategically it is all such a fuck up. Traditionally the world had needed an economically strong US so the US can stand up against the evil autocrats. If the US is throwing in its lot with the axis of evil then what is the point? Boycotting the US and economically damaging it will also mean that the likes of China and Russia are better placed to run the world. There is no good outcome.

Thinking back to Bucha and the families found in shallow graves with their hands bound behind their back and the young women found gang-raped and executed, it is just revolting to watch Trump and Vance crawling up to Putin and yet demand of Zelensky that he genuflects to them in public.

Russian money is behind Trump and Putin has stuff on him.

I have always been against the monarchy but I swear to become one of those weirdos who camp out for days in Union Jack trousers suits every time there's a royal event if Camilla takes the opportunity to poison the venal fucker.

I actually think it’s more important than ever to maintain a positive relationship with the US.

Of course it would be satisfying to tell him to f* off, however we’re in a very precarious and vulnerable position.

The UK is weak by itself. Europe is also weak in comparison to the US or Russia.

mrshoho · 28/02/2025 22:22

When I think back to the Good Friday Agreement and how valuable the input from the US was with Bill Clinton and George Mitchell assisting in brokering the deal. There is no comparison to what we are now witnessing.

mindutopia · 28/02/2025 22:22

I’m American (dual national, though thankfully haven’t lived there for 15 years). I don’t know a single American who voted for this nonsense. I also don’t know a single American who thinks any of this isn’t as embarrassing as all the rest of us do. Obviously, there are plenty of crazy MAGAs out there who love it (frankly not friends with anyone like that!).

But there is a lot of dissent and resistance in America that isn’t being covered by the mainstream media (who are kinda still trying to placate Trump). And there is wide acceptance of likely voter fraud, which Trump and Musk have widely hinted at. All this bullshit isn’t as supported in America as non-Americans seem to believe, but realistically, the average person can’t really do much against an authoritarian regime, same as how Putin stays in power despite being an absolute cretin. Elections are rigged, people get paid off, dissent is being silenced, including violently.

But do you think we should stay close to the US at all costs? Do you have any red lines at all that you wouldn't be prepared to cross?

It will be totally lost on most Americans.....
