For being rude to an old lady

ThePerkyCoralPoet · 28/02/2025 18:13

Doing my food shop at m&s, I was rushing to pick someone up after. I needed some jam. Lady was in the way. I said “excuse me sorry can I just grab that” she just stood there so I proceeded to reach for the jam.

She gave me the most disgusting look I have ever recieved.

So because today has been a long day I said “ I did actually say excuse me and I did actually ask you to move out of the way” to which she responded “it’s such a me first attitude” I said “you do realise you’re in a supermarket. And you don’t own the supermarket. We all have places to be and people to see darling” and I walked off.

am I missing something here. Have I not used correct supermarket etiquette

Sympathies. A lot of people go into a dream world when they enter a supermarket and it's infuriating. The blank staring at the shelves goes on way too long a lot of the time. My other pet peeve is the standing in the way and not listening when l say excuse me. I give them 3 "excuse me's" then l just move forward. Bonus points for putting trolley perpendicular across aisles

Paniconthedancefloor · 01/03/2025 08:35

She was stood there looking at the shelves and didn’t hear you, you reached across and she didn’t say anything and then you decided to have a pop at her because you were stressed and in a rush. You were the rude one, stop shouting at other people because you’re wound up, it’s not her fault. YABVU.

I can't help thinking that AIBU should be retitled IADNBU, as in 'I Am Definitely Not Being Unreasonable' because so many OP's double down on their justification for their actions. Even when virtually everyone is telling them they are rude or arrogant or just plain wrong, they front it out. Occasionally you will see someone admit that they have misjudged a situation or overreacted or behaved badly, but it's definitely a rarity.

Indeed. I always find myself having huge respect for someone who holds their hands up, admits "I was having a bad day, was completely in the wrong" etc. Not easy to do, even on an anonymous forum, but admirable.

It’s weirder how desperate you are to claim it’s not old. By how close it is to average life expectancy it literally is old.
It’s not an insult, no need to keep denying it. Strange.

60 is older not old. There’s a difference. I’m 63 and I am not old. How old are you?

@BunnyLake totally agree. 60 isn't old!

Comtesse · 01/03/2025 08:32

I would have ignored the dirty look personally and not got into the back chat. You asked her to move politely and then reached round - no big deal.

Yes, talk about making a meal of it. She couldn’t have been in that much of a rush if she had time to start going on at the ‘old’ woman.

WhatTheKey · 01/03/2025 08:40

ThePerkyCoralPoet · 01/03/2025 00:35

She looked at me. She definitely heard me.

She heard you say something. She may not have heard what.
Honestly, what's the point of asking if you were rude if you're not open to other people's opinion on that very question?

It’s old. You don’t have to like it.

'Stress' Dear God! Stress over a jar of jam in M and S!

Edited

I meant she was stressed because of her mum not over the jam

Maybe they think I must be doddery and frail at 63. I’m neither, I haven’t even gone grey.

Nannyfannybanny · 01/03/2025 08:42

60 at best! We do help each other these days! Certainly in the village where I live. If you were so worried about collecting your injured mum which I understand, why were you so bothered about getting into M and S for jam! That would have been the last thing on most people's minds

Of course it is. 60 is 3/4 of the way through average life expectancy. Do you think someone is only “old” for 3 years or something?

How you age depends on many factors and everyone is different. And what’s considered ‘elderly’ has changed through the ages as life expectancy has changed. It’s not a one size fits all situation and I think the ageist element on the thread is the assumption that it is.

Astrabees · 01/03/2025 08:46

I hope she dines out on the story and has a good laugh at your expense for a while, OP, you are a total twunt.

Diningtableornot · 01/03/2025 08:47

It was disrespectful. You barged in front of her by the sound of it and were unnecessarily rude . Darling??

lottiegarbanzo · 01/03/2025 08:47

In the next episode:

OP ploughs into someone on her bike, knocking them flying and generating an angry outburst (while riding on the pavement of course, because she's young and important and can't be inconvenienced by rules or cars or shit like that). 'Well I rang my bell!'

How old are you, and what god given powers do you possess which allow you to decide what age constitutes old ?

😁 Yes I can just picture it. She's so, so important.

Paniconthedancefloor · 01/03/2025 08:48

ThePerkyCoralPoet · 01/03/2025 00:36

No. People don’t help people. Two people walked past my mum who was bleeding profusely. I’m not saying that we should all be like that. But society now really isn’t caring.

And you are part of that problem as opposed to the vast majority on this thread who think you acted like an arse.

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 01/03/2025 08:49

60! At most!
😂

So, younger than poor old Madonna then.

farmlife2 · 01/03/2025 08:52

When you're 20, 60 is old. When I was 20, 35 was old. ha. Even 30 was pretty old. 60 is definitely middle aged but not old. I mean, it's older, but old definitely doesn't kick in till at least 70 IMO.

I'm early 50s. At 20, that was pretty ancient. I certainly don't feel or live old.
