To wish Starmer would make a unilateral decision to rejoin the EU?

That’s all, really. Yes it would be ‘undemocratic’ but should we sacrifice national interest on the altar of a vote from 10 years ago that everyone seems to regret?

We feel adrift during a scary time, and the US has all but ghosted us.

Yes YABVVU

Entangledlife · 27/02/2025 19:03

I wish it too. The problem is if he did we become like America and lose all semblance of democracy. I feel we sometimes need an autocracy and this is one time but it does leave us open for hypocrisy allegations

SeeYouNextThriday · 27/02/2025 19:07

Europe right now doesn’t feel like the sanctuary it did before we left it.

I voted remain but I think going backwards would not be a good move.

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 27/02/2025 19:08

YABU I don't know anyone who voted leave who regrets the decision. I'd expect full scale riots if he even attempted anything of the like. He and his party are hugely disliked, especially amongst the sterotype population who voted leave. Making that kind of decision would be disaster.

America may have ghosted us because of our current goverment who have been fairly obvious in their opinions of the new American President.

RhubarbCrumbs · 27/02/2025 19:08

I’d prefer there be a vote for it, but don’t see that happening. And also have zero faith in the general public any more 😅

Ankhmo · 27/02/2025 19:09

I'd rather Starmer realise that FAR FAR FAR more people DIDN'T vote for him than did and completely reform the way government is chosen in this country.

Will he do that? Doubt it, he wouldn't be in power now if it wasn't for the system that got him there.

ETA. I was curious.
From what I can see on Google.
14 million people voted leave in 2016 and just 9 million voted for labour in 2024. I'm sure that means something but... I just find it interesting.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 27/02/2025 19:10

Yanbu to wish it but unfortunately that ship has sailed

I'm just focused on not getting sick from my many pre existing conditions and preparing to join Bupa now that the NHS is being stripped to an American style bare bones thing.

SophieFichini · 27/02/2025 19:11

At this very moment in time? That wouldn't be very clever, would it?

BMW6 · 27/02/2025 19:11

You want a Dictatorship here OP?

Mittens67 · 27/02/2025 19:14

I do wonder if those who supported brexit would have done so had they known what was coming given how much we need europe more than ever now.
Although the few people I know personally who voted for brexit did so from racism and nostalgia for “the good old days” both of which were stoked up by cummings propaganda and even now don’t seem to appreciate the mess we are in.
I wish starmer would rejoin the eu but realistically there is no way this could be done because those against would make such capital of it being undemocratic as to force him out of office. Even as pm you can only do so much.

ButterCrackers · 27/02/2025 19:15

Labour agrees with Brexit. People who voted for Labour are in agreement with Brexit. They won the election.

XWKD · 27/02/2025 19:16

It would take years of accession talks. Like other new members, there would need to be a plan to join the euro. Greece would want its treasures back. Ireland would want several paintings it believes it owns. Now go through all the grievances of each member state...

MissyB1 · 27/02/2025 19:16

I was wishing it even before the current shit show. But yes I really think he needs to do it - he won't though 🙁

LillyPJ · 27/02/2025 19:16

I doubt if they'd want us back.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 27/02/2025 19:16

He literally can't.

Even if he could take the decision to rejoin without having a referendum in the UK (although he would still need a majority in parliament for doing that), there would need to be a unanimous yes vote from the EU27 including referendums in several of those countries.

Newrumpus · 27/02/2025 19:17

Bonkers suggestion

LaPalmaLlama · 27/02/2025 19:19

He can’t but for all that Trump’s a fucker, he has drawn uk back into the European fold a bit so I think there’s increasing potential for some sort of customs union and freedom of movement for young people concessions.

Edited

I'd agree with reform of the voting system. But I do think it's a tad unfair to act as though more people voting for parties other than the winning one is unusual - the Tories have been perfectly happy with the system up until now when it was benefiting them.

The last government that won more than 50% of the votes was when Stanley Baldwin was elected in 1931.

ARealitycheck · 27/02/2025 19:21

As a PP said, the EU is not the land of milk and honey many remainers seem to think. If anything our departure along with our money has put Countries like Germany and France in a difficult place financially. They are trying to plug the deficit our payment removal created. Along with having a larger than before economic migrant crisis from other EU countries that they cannot refuse.

ThankyouBakedP0tato · 27/02/2025 19:21

YABU

You make it sound like it would be very simple to just rejoin the EU and for everything to go back to the way it was 10 years ago at the click of Starmers fingers.

It would just involve another monumental batch of admin and replanning and renegotiation to take place.
It would take years and years and cost a huge amount of taxpayers money. AGAIN

No

SexAndCakes · 27/02/2025 19:24

This is the same sentiment as everyone at the time saying there should be a revote because people didn't understand the referendum.

I voted remain but am staunchly against anything that undermines our system of democracy. If you do away with that we are in serious trouble.

As many people always said, had our politicians listened to us 20 plus years ago, we would still be EU members. The idea of a custom union within Europe is brilliant. What wasn't brilliant was the creation of a parliament above our own dictating our laws. Likewise unrestricted free movement of people.

I agree. And had Blair actually restricted the free movement from Eastern Europe in the noughties (as most other major EU countries did), then we'd probably never have had Brexit.

Yep!

I was happy with what we joined originally. I was less happy with what it evolved into.
