Woman 19 dies in dog attack in Bristol

Apologies if there’s already a thread on this, but how many more lives have to be taken in these horrific attacks before the Government admit that the current measures are failing. It surely has come to the point now that all XL Bullies should be euthanised.

I agree. And I know a vet who agrees - having seen quite a few of these animals for neutering and having disagreed with the idea of a cull beforehand.

What this vet tells me about how vets have to handle them and how other dog owners are clearly petrified of them is frightening. I’m told that other dog owners will leave the surgery waiting room and ask to be messaged when it’s their turn rather than stay in the room with an XL bully eyeing up their dog.

I certainly wouldn’t want to sit anywhere near an XL Bully! I have recently moved to a new area where there are a lot of these dogs, usually walked by small females who wouldn’t stand a chance if the dog reacted. I will walk the other way, even if it means adding time on my journey rather than walk past these dogs.

My friend is a XL bully owner, her DH is a police dog trainer. In the right hands these dogs are no different to any other large breed. Yeah I know not all are owned by people with his experience and capabilities. He's a much loved, well behaved family pet and very affectionate dog who tends to drool on you a lot.

Jazzjazzyjulez · 27/02/2025 14:34

They should be banned and culled without a doubt.

I think they should all be euthanised. One of the biggest problems (see above post) is people who think their XL Bully is different. They think they’re well trained/soft/friendly/part of the family etc. Until they do what they are bred to do/be and they are suddenly unrecognisable from the beloved dog that their owner thought was different.

The danger is twofold. The dogs, and the person who is in denial about what these dogs actually are at their core.

Loads near me all unmuzzled. Terribly sad.

Leaving aside the fact that, as far as I know, the dog involved in this tragic incident hasn’t been confirmed as a XL bully….. I think the focus needs to be on enforcing the law e.g. muzzled in public etc rather than summary mass culling. The breed will naturally disappear in the UK over the next few years, as dogs die and the breeding ban means no replacement. There absolutely does need to be a focus on enforcing the law in the meantime IMO

This is exactly the kind of ignorance that is causing people to lose their lives. They should all be euthanized in my opinion (and I am a dog lover).

Yeah, they're all sweet natured family pets until they chew your face off

Do you really believe this? Could you not comprehend that it’s an instinct in this breed, to kill? Even the best handlers/owners are not able to change this in their nature or control their dog should it turn.

How many more folk are going to be killed before a complete ban is brought in. Utter madness

My greyhound weighs 47KG. He could kill me if he wanted. But how many large male greyhounds kill people? It absolutely IS a problem with the breed and not the owners. These dogs are so inbred they are ticking time bombs, every last one of them.

I have the most adorable, laid back cat. Never hurt a fly. Not long ago, something scared her while she was on my lap. She freaked out and scratched my face in fear.

I absolutely love my cats and I love dogs, too, but in my experience, any animal can turn on your when ill or afraid. They are no different to people in that way.

This woman died inside the flat. There was another woman killed in a house in Jaywick when two attacked her. Unless they are muzzled all the time then it's still not complete protection

The power of XL bullies means that people seem to be more likely to be killed or have life changing injuries than if a golden retriever went for them

EnjoythemoneyJane · 27/02/2025 14:53

Isn’t the problem with these animals (beyond their ridiculously dangerous size and strength) that a high percentage of them in this country are related to a fighting stud dog called ‘Killer Kimbo’, making them genetically unstable and unpredictably reactive?

If this case there’s no solution other than to wipe out the bloodline - sad as that may be for the few responsible owners. Which the kind of people who choose to own breeds like this rarely are.

BeachRide · 27/02/2025 14:54

Dog lover here. Put all the XLs down.

Mightymoog · 27/02/2025 14:55

The "ban" is not working.
How about a totally new approach.
ALL dogs banned except certain breeds which must be bought from licensed breeders .
There would still be a lot of scope for different breeds for pets/ working dogs etc. but absolutely no more unlicensed breeders.
All dogs chipped and if found not to be legal they are impounded and PTS.

bullshit. Its the breed not the owner or training.

Many many people have been injured or died (or had their children/elderly relations/innocent neighbors) due to these beasts.

Your friends have whats called lion tamer mentality and that dumb confidence could kill them or worse, strangers.

Please note-collies, poodles, spaniels etc aren't known for suddenly dismembering their owners, are they? There's a reason why...

Downtoearthandsinksthesun · 27/02/2025 14:56

Horrible, nasty, killing machine devil dogs.

Every single one of them need to be culled. Always the same old drivel.. ahhh it’s not the dog, it’s the owner, mine would kill you by licking you to death, they are a nanny breed, mine puts the kids to bed, wouldn’t hurt a fly.. absolute imbeciles.

Burntt · 27/02/2025 14:57

Im a childminder. I had XL bully owners concerned about the lack of childlock on my under sink cupboard- which I keep Tupperware and tea towels in no cleaning products. Yet they were talking about how brilliant their dog is with their kids. Their priorities astounded me to be honest. They spoke about the dog more than the child. Seemed to be part of their identity. I think I'm glad they won't be using me due to the child locks I'd hate to knowingly send a child home to such a dangerous pet every day

Hoppinggreen · 27/02/2025 14:58

Well we don't even need to click to see it wasn't a Golden Retriever in Harrogate do we?
It might be the same type of dogs but more often its the same type of owner.
Whatever happened though its no way to die, the poor woman must have been terrified and my thoughts are with her family
