Woman 19 dies in dog attack in Bristol

Apologies if there’s already a thread on this, but how many more lives have to be taken in these horrific attacks before the Government admit that the current measures are failing. It surely has come to the point now that all XL Bullies should be euthanised.

All good. Til they bite your arm off

Or worse

I am not necessarily anti ban or a fan of these breeds but in the name of fairness I did recently sit next to one in the vet waiting room. It was muzzled, on a short strong lead and I found her to be a really sweet and charming dog.

It was my springer on his way past her that barked at her. Idiot that he is. She ignored him, thankfully.

I’ve had similar in a puppy training class. Best behaved dog was a Rottweiler puppy. Whilst my small dog was a naughty bugger. But the difference is, if my small dog was in pain/irritable and bit me as hard as he could, it would cause a graze. That’s it. Whereas the ones with the major bite force - if they turn due to illness/pain/whatever, then someone is going to die.

Darkwaters · 27/02/2025 15:50

A school friend adopted an XL bully who was going to be euthanised when the ban came into effect. He was a ‘big softie, great with kids, amazing dog etc’ 🙄. The XL bully turned on another dog in the house - the attacked dog survived, friend no longer has XL bully and as a result of the incident is no longer allowed to have grandson for a sleepover.

The dogs can’t help it as they were bred to be dangerous. They need to be euthanised.

Berroca · 27/02/2025 15:51

I absolutely adore dogs but I agree that there is no place for an XL bully in a domesticated setting. I saw one recently and it was very sweet and well behaved, but I'm sure they all are - until they aren't.

We had a staffy cross / Labrador for 10 years until he passed away and I never completely trusted him although he never once showed any malice and was mainly Labrador. I absolutely wouldn't trust an XL bully no matter how sweet it seemed, and the videos of people showing them off as misunderstood and 'nanny dogs' around their children make my blood run cold.

Wolfiefan · 27/02/2025 15:54

Read the report. It’s not even confirmed it’s an xl bully yet.

Queenofparcels · 27/02/2025 15:54

That information was from a friend who had French Bulldogs. Her dogs were neutered and from show stock.

Leaving aside the fact that, as far as I know, the dog involved in this tragic incident hasn’t been confirmed as a XL bully….. I think the focus needs to be on enforcing the law e.g. muzzled in public etc rather than summary mass culling. The breed will naturally disappear in the UK over the next few years, as dogs die and the breeding ban means no replacement. There absolutely does need to be a focus on enforcing the law in the meantime IMO

How would enforcing muzzling in public have assisted this 19 year old who was killed in her own flat, pray tell?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/02/2025 15:55

greyeyedwonder · 27/02/2025 15:00

Oh for god sake all I said was that he was a well behaved trained dog! His owner is a police dog trainer and very experienced! He's muzzled when he goes out and never off his leash.
I didn't say he didn't have the potential to turn, all dogs do and yes their sheer size and power make it impossible to do anything if they do.
Years ago it was the rotty, then the staffy, now it's the XL bully, and in a few years time it'll be another breed.

Has it escaped you that plenty of killings have occurred while the dog is indoors and not muzzled?

These dogs were specifically bred to be intimidating killing machines. It’s not their fault, but it means that they can’t be trusted in the same way that many of us would trust other breeds.

Yeah - as that link confirms, it's a bit of an urban myth.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 27/02/2025 15:58

I'm in favour of a cull, it's getting ridiculous now.

The legal system is too bloody slow

oakleaffy · 27/02/2025 15:59

Seems this dog wasn’t registered- and also took place on a rough council estate- Riot vans had to turn up - Absolutely stereotypical, sadly.

YourHappyJadeEagle · 27/02/2025 16:00

I’ve never been afraid of any dog but I’d never go anywhere near an XL Bully.
The exemption certificates mean nothing. Just says you’re owning one legally, it can still kill and maim.
They should all be euthanised. There’s been at least 3 attacks in the last week.

Was it her own flat with visitors?
Poor woman.

All fine then. 😳

In other news. Dr Shipman was a great GP. When he wasn’t murdering his patient

I disagree,

www.rd.com/list/bulldog-breeds/

"Some bulldogs need to have their face wrinkles cleaned with a dry tissue, used fabric softener sheet or cotton swab every day, like Dr. Wysaski’s current bulldog, Cauliflower. She notes that the wrinkles served a practical yet grotesque purpose when bulldogs were used in bull-baiting: “They could hang on to the nose of the bull, and of course, that would produce a lot of bleeding, and the nose wrinkle would funnel that blood away from the eyes and nostrils,” she says. Luckily, today’s owners only need to worry about food and moisture in the area."

Derbee · 27/02/2025 14:35

I think they should all be euthanised. One of the biggest problems (see above post) is people who think their XL Bully is different. They think they’re well trained/soft/friendly/part of the family etc. Until they do what they are bred to do/be and they are suddenly unrecognisable from the beloved dog that their owner thought was different.

The danger is twofold. The dogs, and the person who is in denial about what these dogs actually are at their core.

Edited

They all think their's is different.

greyeyedwonder · 27/02/2025 14:31

My friend is a XL bully owner, her DH is a police dog trainer. In the right hands these dogs are no different to any other large breed. Yeah I know not all are owned by people with his experience and capabilities. He's a much loved, well behaved family pet and very affectionate dog who tends to drool on you a lot.

I don't believe any of this.

Bignanna · 27/02/2025 16:09

It’s not just XL bullies though. There are other dangerous breeds.

Craftysue · 27/02/2025 16:10

It worries me that children live with these dogs. Adults can take the risk with their own safety but children have no choice. I've seen photos of small children climbing all over these dogs with parents simpering that they're harmless. Makes me shudder

GottaGetOutofDairy · 27/02/2025 16:10

@Queenofparcels then we can agree to disagree. Wrinkles significantly reduce the health of a dog. They encourage terrible skin problems and cause eyelids to run the eyes, risking blindness - especially pre-antibiotics.

If I were breeding for bullbaiting I'd want the healthiest dog possible and not one that needed nursing through its own physiology. Plus, as the other link said: images of the dogs at that time do not show wrinkles - suggesting they are a modern development.

HornyHornersPinger · 27/02/2025 16:12

Enough is enough. The legislation isn't good enough and too many passers-by and people inside homes are being killed.
They all need rounding-up an euthanising, I don't care how soft or soppy the owner thinks it is.
YES IT IS THE BREED!!

I’m sure. Until it bites someone to death.

being from Bristol I knew before I googled what potential areas of the city this might have occurred in….people living in certain areas seem to be attracted to certain types of breeds. I doubt you will see many XL bullies in Clifton for eg.

Nor do I. As if we needed any more reasons not to trust the police. Will they be switching to XLs from G shepherds then??
