What tights would you assume are allowed with this uniform?

State primary school (my DD is in reception). Uniform policy makes no mention of the colour tights have to be.

Uniform is: black trousers/skirt, white polo top, royal blue jumper.

The uniform section of the local supermarket sells the following colours of tights: red, dark green, white, grey, navy blue, black.

Now I wouldn’t have chosen red or green, but frankly I think all the other colours would be passably smart in the absence of any indication in the uniform policy, but we’ve just been informed our daughter has been wearing the “wrong colour tights” for the last 4 months 🙄🙄 so now I’m wondering if I’m a total eejit for choosing the colour I chose, and if it’s totally obvious they wouldn’t allow it...

So, out of grey, white, black and navy blue, in the absence of any indication in the uniform policy which colour(s) would you assume were acceptable for a pupil at this school?

Can't go wrong with black

RafaistheKingofClay · 24/02/2025 19:21

I’d have gone black or white. Not grey unless the skirt is grey.

DragonFly98 · 24/02/2025 19:26

Black or possibly grey.

JoyousEagle · 24/02/2025 19:26

Black skirt should definitely be black tights. Grey at a push.
How did you not notice this for 4 months? Appreciate not everyone does drop off and pick up.

My DD is in year 1 and I do drop off most days. The colour of tights worn by other children isn't something I've ever noticed. I guess I'd notice if someone was in lime green, but other than it completely passes me by.

Beeloux · 24/02/2025 19:28

Think it depends on the school. Ds1 school requires navy trousers/skirt so I’d presume black or navy tights. Never seen any of the girls wearing grey or white tights but again, would depend on the uniform.

Snorlaxo · 24/02/2025 19:28

Black or grey for practical reasons (doesn’t show dirt and easy to find in the shops/online) Not white.

Fizbosshoes · 24/02/2025 19:28

I can't believe schools are so pernickety about such minor details.
DDs friend got reprimanded for wearing black instead of navy tights (admittedly secondary school)

SnakebitesandSambucas · 24/02/2025 19:28

Saw leopard tights today on a walk up from the local primary school today! The girl was very funky 😁

GirdYurLoins · 24/02/2025 19:29

I’d have got the poor kid trousers 😀

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 24/02/2025 19:29

Similar uniform at our school (grey instead of black skirt though) and the tights HAVE to be grey. No excuses accepted 🙄 (DD is 4).

I'd already bought black which aren't allowed and we also assumed black tracksuit (colour not specified) but it's got to be navy, which doesn't match the royal blue school colours. So I had to exchange all her gym stuff too. They haven't even worn the bloody tracksuit once since they started last September 😡 it's now too small and needs replacing.

Rachie1973 · 24/02/2025 19:29

To be fair our primary isn’t that worried really. So long as the kids turn up, fed, watered and warm lol

Flamingo68 · 24/02/2025 19:31

I’d have expected black if that’s what colour the trouser option is.

Diningtableornot · 24/02/2025 19:32

Any of those colours would look nice with black, white and blue, and sufficiently formal. It's bonkers that they didn't tell you.

worcesterpear · 24/02/2025 19:35

For a state primary, I'd not expect any colours unless stated, but probably black, navy or grey, or a colour to match the jumper or polo shirt if wanting to fit in. When mine were that age, there was a girl with coloured teddy bear tights, some wore colourful trainers, there were no stipulations about colour of shoes, socks or tights. These controlling headteachers shouldn't be encouraged.

Blubbles · 24/02/2025 19:35

Id ignore them tbh

Strawberryorangejuice · 24/02/2025 19:37

Black or grey.

Our school is officially navy or grey but they really couldn't care less as the colour of their tights has no impact on their ability learn!

Roastiesarethebestbit · 24/02/2025 19:38

I always got my daughter tights to match her jumper when she was in infants. But I could have sent her in unicorn tights and the school wouldn’t have cared. As long as she was comfortable and dressed appropriately for the weather, the school didn’t mind a little flexibility with the uniform.

In your case I would have probably have Chosen white at first, and then regretted it and gone back for grey. But more likely I’d have hunted down some royal blue tights!

Lovelysummerdays · 24/02/2025 19:39

Our uniform is similar to yours ( bottoms can be grey, black) and tbh they’ve worn all of those colours.

Everydayimhuffling · 24/02/2025 19:42

Just ask them to show you where it says that in the uniform policy. If they didn't specify then it's their problem.

Everydayimhuffling · 24/02/2025 19:44

DD's school doesn't say: she's had green, black and grey depending on what's been available in the supermarket at the time. They haven't mentioned it

applestrudels · 24/02/2025 19:45

GirdYurLoins · 24/02/2025 19:29

I’d have got the poor kid trousers 😀

A few people have said that now, but she's very skinny for her height and we struggle to find trousers that don't fall down, so it has to be a pinafore dress.

(Incidentally, that's part of the reason I chose grey tights - they were lovely and woolly, whereas all the black ones at that particular supermarket were nylon, which I don't think is as warm).

SnoopysHoose · 24/02/2025 19:45

I will never understand this obsession with uniform, polo, skirt/pinafore and cardi/jumper in school colours, no badges/brands this should be all that's needed.

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 24/02/2025 19:45

I’d have said black or navy blue based on the uniform colours of black bottoms & blue jumpers.

SnakebitesandSambucas · 24/02/2025 19:46

Tights get ruined so quicky anyway. Leggings are a good option. Lucky the kids primary school seems to be a bit more relaxed. Dreading secondary school and all the £90 blazers.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 24/02/2025 19:46

With that uniform, I'd have used black or white. Grey wouldn't go with the black skirt.

But they're a bit ridiculous to not state the colour if it must be black!! So YANBU to have used grey!
