What tights would you assume are allowed with this uniform?

State primary school (my DD is in reception). Uniform policy makes no mention of the colour tights have to be.

Uniform is: black trousers/skirt, white polo top, royal blue jumper.

The uniform section of the local supermarket sells the following colours of tights: red, dark green, white, grey, navy blue, black.

Now I wouldn’t have chosen red or green, but frankly I think all the other colours would be passably smart in the absence of any indication in the uniform policy, but we’ve just been informed our daughter has been wearing the “wrong colour tights” for the last 4 months 🙄🙄 so now I’m wondering if I’m a total eejit for choosing the colour I chose, and if it’s totally obvious they wouldn’t allow it...

So, out of grey, white, black and navy blue, in the absence of any indication in the uniform policy which colour(s) would you assume were acceptable for a pupil at this school?

Black with a black skirt.

grey with grey skirts.

That’s what we have with our local schools.

ThatEllie · 24/02/2025 19:06

I’d assume black only, to match the skirt. Since the uniform colours are black, white, royal blue I wouldn’t do grey as it would be adding another colour.

Black or royal blue - but I doubt school will care tbh.
My DD has navy skirts and red jumper at primary school and wore either red or navy tights, red looks really cute on the younger ones!

Coconutter24 · 24/02/2025 19:06

Black

Archive · 24/02/2025 19:07

Black or grey.

Completelyjo · 24/02/2025 19:09

Surely it’s pointless to guess? Some schools do black, some do cream, some do the school colour.
Was to not obvious to you that other pupils all wore another colour?

fatimashortbread · 24/02/2025 19:11

Black or navy

Coconutter24 · 24/02/2025 19:11

Are you going to put us out our misery and tell us what colour you bought? 😂😂

zaffa · 24/02/2025 19:11

Black or grey (either light or dark grey). If it doesn't specify I wouldn't worry until they do specify and she outgrows these - but when I last bought some I got them at DD request as everyone else had grey and she only had black - so I knew both options were fine.

lollynip · 24/02/2025 19:12

Black skirt should definitely be black tights. Grey at a push.
How did you not notice this for 4 months? Appreciate not everyone does drop off and pick up.

ShakeUpYourTiredEyes · 24/02/2025 19:12

I'd say grey

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 24/02/2025 19:12

How did you not notice?

StScholastica · 24/02/2025 19:12

Oh how annoying. Just say.

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 24/02/2025 19:13

I think orange would work, striking but fun for primary school.
I've often wanted to redesign school uniforms. I think thats what motivated JK Rowling to write Harry Potter, she couldn't pick one though so had to create the four houses of Hogwarts to justify herself. Then I guess the plot wrote itself.
I am kidding by the way.

hockityponktas · 24/02/2025 19:13

I’d assume black to match the skirt….. weirdly invested in the answer, come on OP!

ButtonMoonLoon · 24/02/2025 19:13

What colour shoes does the uniform state?

I would assume black tights and shoes with black skirts.
My daughters primary uniform was navy skirt/trousrs/shoes/tights

Threecraws · 24/02/2025 19:15

For a black skirt I would have gone with black tights. I think a royal blue would also have been fine but more likely to be picked in primary whereas a nude may be an option for secondary

PoppysAunt · 24/02/2025 19:16

Put her in trousers.

Rachie1973 · 24/02/2025 19:17

I tend to match my girls to their sweaters. It looks nice, and I did it with my older girls when they were little.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 24/02/2025 19:17

Black.

But didn’t you notice at the start of term?

They do need to update their website though to avoid people spending money on the wrong thing.

ScrambledSmegs · 24/02/2025 19:17

Black to match the skirt.

Well no, because they weren’t all wearing another colour, because no colour is specified in the uniform policy!

Looking around today, actually most of the girls were wearing trousers, but of those who were wearing tights, about 3/4 were wearing black, and I’d say 1/4 were wearing grey.

Anyway, I’m glad to see quite a lot of people would have gone for the colour I chose, meaning I wasn’t being completely silly…

I chose grey tights, and apparently I was suppose to magically know they are “supposed to be” black 🙄

Balloonhearts · 24/02/2025 19:18

I'd have gone black or white

HowToSaveAWife · 24/02/2025 19:18

Navy or black? But unless they also start policing the colour of boys' socks and that it's not stated in the uniform policy, I wouldn't be inclined to break my heart to follow verbal guidance.

takealettermsjones · 24/02/2025 19:19

With a free choice I'd have chosen grey. I wouldn't put a reception age child in black tights, white ones would be grey anyway within a few weeks, and navy would not quite match the shade of the jumper and would therefore annoy me. 🤣

Just to say though, specified tights colour doesn't always match the sock colour. My kids' school uniform has a green jumper/cardigan, grey skirt/pinafore/pants, and white socks or grey tights.
