For the last 4 years, I have worked with an older male colleague who made my working life hell. Long story short, he would gaslight me, take credit for my work and ideas and put me down at any given opportunity which made him look good to others. He is idolised in our department by some, including our line manager, who at the time, would play down my concerns, even with written evidence and screenshots.

Anyway, he has just announced he is retiring and a card is being sent round the team to sign.

I know if I don't sign it, it will look like he has got to me (which he has), but I don't want to give him the satisfaction of that, so I thought of writing something over the top, that to anyone else reading it when signing it, won't see I'm being sarcastic and already counting down the hours until he goes!

Yes this is probably petty, but I know mumsnet is great for things like this to help me with.

  1. Don’t sign - you’re workplace needs understand they can’t force niceties when you’ve been bullied or/
  2. Bye! Name
Edited

HR. I wouldn’t sign it either.

‘Good luck’. As double-edged as you can get.

PaperAeroplane · 20/02/2025 14:52

He will be fully aware that he has "got to you" I've been in a situation like this and I didn't sign the card at all.

Cyclebabble · 20/02/2025 14:53

I hope your retirement brings you everything you so richly deserve.

Kittygolightlyy · 20/02/2025 14:54

Just sign your name. Professional. He doesn’t give a shit about you, he won’t care what you write, don’t waste any more thinking time on him!

Ellie56 · 20/02/2025 14:54

I couldn't be arsed wasting the ink.

Regards

WRN.

Cattery · 20/02/2025 14:56

Goodbye and good luck

BurningBright · 20/02/2025 14:56

Personally, I wouldn't sign, but if you absolutely must:

I was so pleased to hear about your retirement. I hope it brings you everything you deserve.

Secularbeaver · 20/02/2025 14:56

Happy birthday.

ToBlithelyGo · 20/02/2025 14:56

Sorry to see you. Go.

With a subtle/ambiguous full stop between the you and the go, and make the G/g a upper case/lower case mash up.

RobinEllacotStrike · 20/02/2025 14:56

"off you fuck then - enjoy your retirement".

"Have a wonderful retirement party" (assuming no party is planned).

"wishing you a retirement"

"it won't be the same here without you."

“I’ll never forget our special night together “

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye 🎶

ThreeMagicNumber · 20/02/2025 15:00

I think either just writing regards and your name or even just your name will make your feelings perfectly clear to him, but isn't anything that will be interpreted as snidey by the team.

FriendlyEeyore · 20/02/2025 15:00

I’d rise above it. Things like this can backfire and make you look like the problem all along.

More importantly do you really think he’s going to look back and care what you write on a leaving card when he’s enjoying his retirement?

HettyCletter · 20/02/2025 15:00

Signing it feels like too much effort for this twatwaffle. Initial it to merely show acknowledgement of the fact he is leaving.

I wouldn’t sign it. Who cares what he thinks. He’ll be gone. I refused to sign a card or contribute to a gift for someone who was not pleasant to me in my workplace. Nary an eyelid was batted. In fact, the poor PA had to remind people…she has worked here 15 years, contribute something so she at least gets a send off. Heh.

Queenanne20 · 20/02/2025 15:01

I'll always remember you and what it was like having you as a colleague.
