Posting here for traffic.

For the last 4 years, I have worked with an older male colleague who made my working life hell. Long story short, he would gaslight me, take credit for my work and ideas and put me down at any given opportunity which made him look good to others. He is idolised in our department by some, including our line manager, who at the time, would play down my concerns, even with written evidence and screenshots.

Anyway, he has just announced he is retiring and a card is being sent round the team to sign.

I know if I don't sign it, it will look like he has got to me (which he has), but I don't want to give him the satisfaction of that, so I thought of writing something over the top, that to anyone else reading it when signing it, won't see I'm being sarcastic and already counting down the hours until he goes!

Yes this is probably petty, but I know mumsnet is great for things like this to help me with.

"I can't begin to tell you how I felt when I heard you are retiring. I hope your retirement makes you as happy as you always made me at work"

Bon Voyage!

...as in... into the wide blue yonder...far, far away!

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 20/02/2025 14:29

Tbh, just signing your name first initial surname and adding no message would be fine.

At the side somewhere.

G. Beast.

It says you don't give a shit.

Shinyandnew1 · 20/02/2025 14:29

If everyone else loves him and I had to stay working with them, I'd go for a best wishes. Maybe a Bon voyage!

InTheWild · 20/02/2025 14:29

“Farewell Bob”

Short and generic.

Snowmanscarf · 20/02/2025 14:29

SBHon · 20/02/2025 14:26

Write “Happy Birthday”.

That made me chortle.

Dror · 20/02/2025 14:29

SBHon · 20/02/2025 14:26

Write “Happy Birthday”.

Yes! Shows no one gives a shit about the arbitrary writing on bits of card and just assumed it was for a birthday. He's not even worth checking the front of the card or who it's for.

JHound · 20/02/2025 14:30

Work won’t be the same without you.

I hope you have the retirement you deserve.

Write “Happy Birthday”.

This has really made me chuckle!!

"See ya. Wouldn't wanna be ya!"

AssassinsBlade · 20/02/2025 14:32

I hope you enjoy your retirement as much as I will 😁

"Words can't express my feelings on your leaving."

I like this! Grin

BluebelllsRosesDaffodills · 20/02/2025 14:33

I’d buy a different card and send it anonymously. Sign it from ‘your friends at work’. Twisted gifts and Not Nice Things have some really rude ones! Perfect for him.

wandapower · 20/02/2025 14:33

I love @sugarspiceandeverythingnice12 suggestion! 😅

PastaBolognese · 20/02/2025 14:34

I actually just wouldn't sign it. I daresay he knows he got to you in any case, you can't do anything about that. I had a similar situation though I don't think he knew he was getting to people, it was just his MO.

OTOH there have been some brilliant suggestions on here 🤣

LightCameraBitchSmile · 20/02/2025 14:34

"Wishing you all the very best in your retirement! Your presence will certainly be remembered."
(Sounds warm, but technically doesn’t specify how you’ll remember him!)
"It’s hard to imagine the office without you! Wishing you a retirement as fulfilling as your career."
(Again, leaves room for interpretation!)
"Your impact here has been undeniable. Wishing you happiness in this next chapter!"
(Accurate, without revealing your true feelings!)
"Wishing you a wonderful retirement. You’ve certainly made a lasting impression!"
(True, just not in the way he thinks!)

^ all thanks to AI!

Cunningfungus · 20/02/2025 14:35

Good riddance, ya prick 😁

Delatron · 20/02/2025 14:36

Ha - I’d write the Happy Birthday or no message and just my initial and surname. Gives the impression he is nothing to you.

He probably wants to have upset you. Don’t give him the satisfaction..

PrincessHoneysuckle · 20/02/2025 14:36

I'm really going to enjoy your retirement, hope you do too

Congratulations and good luck for the future!

Sit back and let karma and the sweet release of death do the rest.
