Posting here for traffic.

For the last 4 years, I have worked with an older male colleague who made my working life hell. Long story short, he would gaslight me, take credit for my work and ideas and put me down at any given opportunity which made him look good to others. He is idolised in our department by some, including our line manager, who at the time, would play down my concerns, even with written evidence and screenshots.

Anyway, he has just announced he is retiring and a card is being sent round the team to sign.

I know if I don't sign it, it will look like he has got to me (which he has), but I don't want to give him the satisfaction of that, so I thought of writing something over the top, that to anyone else reading it when signing it, won't see I'm being sarcastic and already counting down the hours until he goes!

Yes this is probably petty, but I know mumsnet is great for things like this to help me with.

“Into the abyss of thy mercy’s depths we cast the body of our brother XXX, commending his soul into thy hands; through the Department for Work and Pensions.”

Priceless ! 😂

I think it’s pretty well known.

PositivityVibes · 22/02/2025 08:42

Just don't sign it.

I had a colleague who retired, she made my life hell, I was asked to arrange a collection and buy a gift, I refused and HR got involved Hmm

Stood my ground and stated the number of complaints I'd made but got nowhere. Everyone knew what an absolute cow she was.

Didn't sign the card, now blank her if I see her and have moved onwards and upwards.

Sorry for the rant Grin

Lemsipper · 22/02/2025 10:11

“I hope life is as good to you as you were to me!”

Reminds me of the time a psychotic boss got all the staff together in the staffroom, and announced with a benevolent smile, she'd be retiring in 3 months time.
There was a long, long pause. She looked round at all of us expectantly, waiting for the speeches to begin. Eventually she said, "I suppose you're all shocked!" with a rapidly fading smile.
To which one colleague, with a reputation for brown-nosing, reluctantly gave her a half-hearted, "Well... You'll be missed."

As for me, I'd genuinely hated the woman, and when the envelope when round for cash for a retirement gift, I'd gathered 3p in the form of the 3 grubbiest, oldest pennies I could find in my house. Plunged my hand into the envelope, gave it a rattle like I was dropping in a handful, and left my 3p.

I think to think that someone somewhere totted it up and thought "who the fuck gave 3p?! Someone else must hate her as much as me!"

I still keep my ear to the ground so that I can celebrate when I find out that the old bitch has conked.

Genius! Ah, thank god the days of coin collection envelopes are over.

riceuten · 22/02/2025 10:42

I hinestly don’t know how we’ll cope without you

(very easily)

BadTitan · 22/02/2025 15:31

I had a colleague who signed every card

Yes! Shows no one gives a shit about the arbitrary writing on bits of card and just assumed it was for a birthday. He's not even worth checking the front of the card or who it's for.

Even better if you can misspell his name.

WadiShab · 23/02/2025 06:20

You could say

Get your skates on enter name the time has come for you to enjoy the retirement you deserve. I'm so excited for you, toodle pip!

Personally I wouldn't sign it at all when asked to sign I'simplecy say "no thank you" and move along.

CurlewKate · 23/02/2025 08:30

"LouH1981

Oh, what subtlety have I missed? I thought it just meant cunt?

Americano75 · 23/02/2025 10:33

'Kind regards'

CustardySergeant · 23/02/2025 14:15

Americano75 · 23/02/2025 10:33

'Kind regards'

I'd leave out the 'kind'. Just 'regards' would do.

Beesandhoney123 · 23/02/2025 14:27

I wouldn't sign it. No one would notice anyway. He won't care.

If you have to sign it because someone is watching you, put something benign because someone might hire him back as a consultant or something.

Americano75 · 23/02/2025 16:36

CustardySergeant · 23/02/2025 14:15

I'd leave out the 'kind'. Just 'regards' would do.

Ah see 'kind' is an extra layer of passive aggression.

FreedomForties · 24/02/2025 19:26

I always love this kind of thing:
" I hope your retirement is as pleasant as you are"
He'll know it's an insult 😂

Onethinnyatatime · 24/02/2025 19:27

SBHon · 20/02/2025 14:26

Write “Happy Birthday”.

This makes me laugh.

Another version is write "Happy Birthday", then cross it out and write "Farewell Bob. Have all the retirement you deserve. Bye, bye OP"

Navyontop · 24/02/2025 19:28

SBHon · 20/02/2025 14:26

Write “Happy Birthday”.

This is my favourite

vivazeboo · 24/02/2025 19:40

I would do 'How will we cope without you' with just your first initial to sign...anyone with half a brain will see the passive aggression there..but on the surface it seems nice enough...sorry you had to deal with that A hole...I'll wager you arent the only one to feel this way though...bet it'll all come out after they've gone!

vivazeboo · 24/02/2025 19:42

Actually now I've read it back it seems blatantly sarcastic...but who bloody cares ha!

Rfvvvv · 24/02/2025 19:50

I worked with someone awful once and I took a half day on their last day, didn't sign their card or contribute a penny.

welshmercury · 24/02/2025 20:59

I wouldn’t sign it. They aren’t worthy of your efforts.

Gagaandgag · 24/02/2025 21:03

CuddlyDodoToy · 20/02/2025 14:38

I think a lot of these suggestions will damage you more than him, especially if he is "idolised". You will make yourself look petty, not clever.

I suggest you either don't sign it at all, or just sign your name.

Get your satisfaction from the fact that you won't have to work with him anymore.

Yes. Don’t sign
