Delivery man using toilet

Fountofwisdom · 20/02/2025 10:59

I admit I am a bit of a clean freak at best of times. Can’t bear people wearing shoes inside etc. But really don’t like workmen, etc using my bathroom.

A delivery driver arrived earlier with some kitchen appliances, just delivering, not installing. He asked to use the bathroom and I immediately wanted to say no, as I HATE strangers in my bathroom. But didn’t feel I could refuse.

So he was in bathroom for a minute or so and went on his way. I went in to clean the toilet as I always would, and not only had he used it, but he left a big black pubic hair on the toilet seat 🤮🤮 Absolutely revolting.

Have spent 5 minutes deep cleaning and disinfecting toilet and have put the hand towel in wash because I’m so disgusted.

AIBU to refuse access to my bathroom in future? Or am I over-reacting?

i will have builders in for 2 weeks shortly and obviously they will want to use the bathroom, which I’m not delighted about but can’t be helped. Means I’ll have to clean the toilet every day, but I can’t refuse them using it.

But random delivery men - would you refuse? And what would you say?

5 mins deep cleaning? 😂
I never understand what a deep clean is. Surely clean toilet, sink, floor, skirting & de-cob webbing is the whole bathroom and that’s just a standard clean.

My narrative did not change but you have clearly got a bee in your bonnet. The details I added in response to other posts and questions were additional reasons that I felt uncomfortable - he was pushy, he was unfriendly, he never said please or thankyou. I don’t give a flying fig how many YABU votes my OP got - the people who voted that way are either talking bollocks, trolls or being holier than thou in the way only MNs are. But thank you to the MANY MANY people who empathised and understood my position.

Many many people agreed with you?

86.% of people think YABU

Finallybackinbootcuts · 21/02/2025 21:16

I think you are over-reacting somewhat tbh. It’s not like he left the bowl covered in shit.

But that said I don’t like it when the delivery man/gas man asks to use the loo either. I’ve been known to fib and say it’s broken 😬

It was completely unexpected that a delivery driver dropping something off should ask to use my toilet. So I was caught unawares and he was already inside my flat. The whole point being that in that split second I couldn’t think what to say. Is it really that confusing? Hasn’t everyone at some point agreed to something because it might be awkward/embarrassing/seem rude to say no?

Yes it is really confusing. Because - for me - it would have been odd but not a huge problem

For you - it is a huge problem and you could have said very politely "I'm sorry, I would prefer not" especially as it's not the norm.

Oh dear, I’ve touched a nerve haven’t I?

No, you’ve pissed me off because you have REPEATEDLY posted along the lines of “her story changed”, implying that everyone thinks IABU, despite MANY other people agreeing with me and/or explaining to you that my thoughts and explanations are allowed to evolve. You have been banging your drum for over 24 hours now, give it a bloody rest.

Those details are rather crucial. If you turned down someone wanting to use the toilet due to obsessive hygiene concerns you'd be unreasonable. Not understanding that tradespeople etc need to use private toilets is majorly unreasonable.

But jf you have concerns about a man's behaviour in your home then of course you need to follow your instinct.
The scenario is completely different.

I know. I don’t understand this deep clean business.

Nor me. How do people cope with teenagers having all their friends round? Family in numbers calling round (invited). Parties. Christmas with relations.

I honestly am at a loss.

Err… no. Op can turn down someone wanting to use her toilet for whatever reason she wants and ‘obsessive hygiene concerns’ is one of those reasons. It’s her own, private, space - not a public convenience. And on top of that, this wasn’t a tradesperson, it was a delivery driver who was at her property for seconds - not working there all day.

MoonlightMemories · 21/02/2025 23:22

I wouldn't have been happy letting a random stranger use my loo either, I have to say.

But I have also just had a very bad tummy bug (not food contamination.... the usual winter one that is highly contagious) and so I'm a bit extra paranoid at the moment about catching something like that again....and people can shed it before they show symptoms...

Well obviously not as the poster got your attention

Hobbesmanc · 22/02/2025 08:26

We've had tradesmen in now for months without a portaloo and honestly not been a problem that a quick wipe around hasn't sorted. Open windows seem to disperse any stinks

We live in a busy suburb but there's no public loos, neither of the two supermarkets have loos, there's a Costa but parking is a nightmare and none of the pubs open early. So they'd have to drive ten mins to big Tesco.

imtheholidayarmadillo · 22/02/2025 08:47

Dotto · 20/02/2025 11:53

Should he have asked? Or should he have been professional and used a public facility instead via effective time management?

Most people aren't desperate or caught short.

Edited

Not everyone thinks a quick 'could I borrow your loo please?' is unprofessional though (although I'll concede it's unprofessional if they don't leave the loo as they found it.)

Obviously the homeowner is entitled to say no, but provided it's just for a quick wazz and not a dump, I don't think it's so egregious to ask.

Clearly a lot of firms do think so, when they advise their employees not to do it.

Newbie8918 · 22/02/2025 14:29

I'm in the middle of lots of building work and thankfully all of them have been completely respectful but even so, it would never ever occur to me to deny someone a basic human right.

You'd leave someone uncomfortable and embarrassed for asking, just because you are a germ phobe?

SpunkyKoala · 22/02/2025 14:41

If you refuse your builders you may quickly find yourself without builders and they gossip like old ladies

InveterateWineDrinker · 22/02/2025 14:49

Last time I had building work done I was asked during the design/quote stage if I would let the builders use our toilet. The alternative was to rent a portable dunny, stick it in the front yard, and add the cost to the quote.

They used our toilet.
