Fascism doesn't arrive in fancy dress...

"I sometimes fear that
people think that fascism arrives in fancy dress
worn by grotesques and monsters
as played out in endless re-runs of the Nazis.

Fascism arrives as your friend.
It will restore your honour,
make you feel proud,
protect your house,
give you a job,
clean up the neighbourhood,
remind you of how great you once were,
clear out the venal and the corrupt,
remove anything you feel is unlike you...

It doesn't walk in saying,
"Our programme means militias, mass imprisonments, transportations, war and persecution."

Apparently it arrives in an Ill fitting suit and comb over

LunaNorth · 18/02/2025 10:42

Sometimes it arrives in a Tesla.

username299 · 18/02/2025 10:45

You'll get the "far right is meaningless" crowd along in a minute.

Dotjones · 18/02/2025 10:54

The only reason fascism can make a comeback is because liberal democracies fail the people. Most people put their own interests first. If a government puts the interests of the people first as well as running things in a competent and fair manner, they'd remain in power.

Brexit, Corbyn, Starmer, Trump - the extreme options get voted in because the moderate options seem incapable of putting more money in working people's pockets. If someone sees themselves getting poorer through the Brown years, poorer under the Tories, poorer under Labour again, where do they go. Eventually people will drift towards the "Fuck them all to death" type of politician, if only because nothing else seems to work.

BlondiePortz · 18/02/2025 10:55

Wouldn't it depend on how many tequilas you have had?

Battisborough · 18/02/2025 10:58

So what do we do? It’s not in our country so it’s very hard to know what on earth we are meant to do to resist racism in a country where we have no representation despite their massive influence over our future.

Happyinarcon · 18/02/2025 11:00

that doesn’t make much sense, its saying that if someone votes for a political party that cleans up their neighbourhoods and provides jobs then it serves them right if they end up with Nazis.

myplace · 18/02/2025 11:01

Sometimes it does. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Sometimes it really does. It’s group think. If it doesn’t have a fancy dress it soon acquires one, as totalitarianism likes conformity.

Fight it in our country, where it very much is and you're blind if you think it isn't. We literally just had riots where people tried to burn asylum seekers alive.

Absolutely. It's terrifying that people can't see it when it's right in front of them.

I'm not usually one to wring my hands about the state of the world. There have been challenges for every generation. But I'm truly worried about the state of the world right now. It feels like we are on a very slippery slope that could very quickly descend into chaos.

Not everything Trump does is bad. I think trying to end the war is a good thing

The cause of peace is too great for us to allow political disagreements or partisanship to stand in our way.

Trying to end the Ukraine war is a wonderful thing. That would involve Putin retreating not making a deal with the aggressor.

TheOtherAgentJohnson · 18/02/2025 11:11

J D Vance literally used the phrase "the enemy on the inside" in a speech at a right wing conference this week. They're not even hiding it.

Letmehaveabloodyusernameplease · 18/02/2025 11:12

I agree. It's very concerning.

I don't see Starmer as extreme.

I agree with the OP.

Trying to end the war would of course be a good thing, if that was done in a reasonable way.

Rewarding Putin for his aggression by offering up everything he wants before the negotiations have even started is not reasonable, though. It will merely encourage further aggression.

Holding peace talks about Ukraine when the Ukrainians don't even have a seat at the table is not the behaviour of a genuine peacemaker. And forcing Ukraine to accept a settlement that denies their basic sovereignty while allowing the US and Russia to carve up their mineral reserves between them will never produce a sustainable peace.

PandoraSox · 18/02/2025 11:14

Starmer is extreme @dotjones? Extreme what? Centrist?

Any war can be ended by one side surrendering, which is what Trump seems to be aiming for

AlternativeView · 18/02/2025 11:16

@MrsBennetsPoorNerves starmer has entered this arena presenting this as a done deal

By offering troops up he has upset sholz who said nothing has been agreed yet.

People have to be pragmatic about putin.
Do they want the entirety of Ukraine to fall or just a little bit.

oldwhyno · 18/02/2025 11:18

Well if somebody could come along and sort out the housing crisis for the young, develop more equitable employment, improve society, restore some pride and reduce corruption, and not be a fascist I'm sure we'd all be very grateful.

Have you seen what Kim Darroch has said about Starmer?

He's not trying to end the war, he's trying to force Ukraine to never enter NATO which makes them permanent targets for Russian future aggression...while at the same time opening EU, especially former Soviet countries, to the same vulnerable position. While at the same time handing all Ukraine land invaded by Russia to Russia as their land. It empowers Russia beyond belief.

Can you imagine another country invading us, then Russia and America meet without us, and giving the entire South West of England (or wherever) to that aggressor at a smiling photocall? It's just bizarre.

And it makes the aggressor way more confident in doing it again and again because they know America will just stand by smoke and rubber stamp it.
