Fascism doesn't arrive in fancy dress...

Batmanisaplaceinturkey · 18/02/2025 10:36

"I sometimes fear that
people think that fascism arrives in fancy dress
worn by grotesques and monsters
as played out in endless re-runs of the Nazis.

Fascism arrives as your friend.
It will restore your honour,
make you feel proud,
protect your house,
give you a job,
clean up the neighbourhood,
remind you of how great you once were,
clear out the venal and the corrupt,
remove anything you feel is unlike you...

It doesn't walk in saying,
"Our programme means militias, mass imprisonments, transportations, war and persecution."

I feel like there are no 'good guys', in the way there were 'good guys' during WWII. The anti-democrats seem to be in charge everywhere, unsurprisingly in Russia and China, but unexpectedly in America. It seems to me that Europe has relied on American military power and an American alliance based on common values for a long time, and the threat of American involvement has kept the peace. Now that American involvement cannot be relied on, we are in a completely different world. I don't want to think about what would happen if the war spreads across Europe. Being brutally honest, I don't think the combined European forces would be a match for Russia. If I were in charge, my priority would be trying to change that.

Edited

America turned up years late for both world wars why would anyone expect them to be in the front line of ww3

And his stance on not discussing the issue of immigration at high numbers whilst the country’s infrastructure crumbles.

Question it at all and you’re a racist.

Question the large scale ignoring of Pakistani rape gangs? Again, racist. He is doubling down on this rather than finding a way to solve the increasingly poor cross-cultural relationships in the country.

Honestly I’m a lefty at heart, but Starmer is doing more to make us a right wing country than Farage is!

And his stance on not discussing the issue of immigration at high numbers whilst the country’s infrastructure crumbles.

Have you missed the current Labour rhetoric being compared to Reform?

Saying that women can have a penis.
That we can’t say women have a cervix.

There are plenty of reasons why I (a lefty 🙄) dislike him and his politics, but anyone doubling down on gender ideology is instrumental in pushing a country to the right.

Starmer did a U turn on gender ideology before the election. He has recanted the gender ideology nonsense - in fact, I don't believe they're making GRC easier to get.

GrandpaFlump · 18/02/2025 12:55

Locutus2000 · 18/02/2025 12:52

That's all stuff he said whilst the genderwoo nonsense was a high priority for the Tories too.

He has stated his current position clearly. People can change their minds.

Labour also said precisely this a few years ago, but failed to clarify until later that they counted some man with penises as women.

Forgive me if I don’t trust him, particularly when he also stated that 99% of women don’t have a penis. No mate, 100% of women don’t have a penis 🙄

The only reason fascism can make a comeback is because liberal democracies fail the people. Most people put their own interests first. If a government puts the interests of the people first as well as running things in a competent and fair manner, they'd remain in power.

Brexit, Corbyn, Starmer, Trump - the extreme options get voted in because the moderate options seem incapable of putting more money in working people's pockets. If someone sees themselves getting poorer through the Brown years, poorer under the Tories, poorer under Labour again, where do they go. Eventually people will drift towards the "Fuck them all to death" type of politician, if only because nothing else seems to work.

The most sensible thing ive read on here in a long time.

There's a tribunal rn which exposes any statement from Starmer on keeping men out of female CR as pledged

Any 'change in position' is just words not policy

The changing room incident in question happened in Scotland in 2023. So, under the SNP in Scotland whilst the Tories were in charge at Westminster. Not sure how Labour could have prevented that happening.

Not everything Trump does is bad. I think trying to end the war is a good thing

The cause of peace is too great for us to allow political disagreements or partisanship to stand in our way.
Tulsi Gabbard

🤣🤣
have you seen the terms of the peace “deal”? Less peace deal more “Asset stripping” Ukraine and dividing spoils between US and Russia.
Ukraine holds massive reserves of rare minerals , oil etc., that this war has always been about . Russia didn’t invade to be kind to the eastern Russian speaking population. Russia needs Ukraine’s assets and has been after them ever sincE USSR fell.
Any peace will be about that too- who will own these assets.
unless Ukraine can defend their sovereignty and borders they’ll be saddled with national debt bigger than was inflicted on Germany post ww2 in name of making them pay for the war. For a country they could be one of wealthiest in the world .

yeh right. Let’s trust trump ( a known asset stripper, rapist, fraudster, etc) and putin ( who has built a dictatorship, massive wealth and a collection of creative ways to kill his ex friends, or always enemies, ) to broker a deal.
they’re lining their own pockets. That’s why they don’t want Ukraine involved in the peace deal- they’re just bullying and threatening and blackmailing in grand scale. Not even their own countries will benefit from those assets- just the wealthiest , you can be see that in what trump is doing right now, and how outin surrounds himself in oligarchs in sane way as trump now has his pet oligarch.

You’re very naive to think otherwise.

Could you give an example of his extremism?

He thinks it shouldn't be said that women have a cervix. That's extreme.

izimbra · 18/02/2025 13:13

Trump and Vance NEVER refer to the war in Ukraine as an invasion. Never.

EasternStandard · 18/02/2025 13:18

Not sure how Labour could have prevented that happening.

What's in place to stop it happening anywhere?

It's endlessly fascinating that when you point out that gender woo infiltrated the country under the Tories and May and Miller were 100% behind it; Tories say that's because everyone was doing it.

When it's Labour, it's "extremism". You're also informed that the Tories turned it around.

When you point out that in 2024 Starmer agreed with Blair that "biologically, a woman is with a vagina and a man is with a penis". This is conveniently forgotten.

Labour have U turned on making it easier to get a GRC and Streeting is supporting single sex spaces. However they're obviously "extremists" because that suits your narrative.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 18/02/2025 13:19

I'm as gender critical as they come, but I'm so fed up of people trying to make every single discussion centre around gender issues. It's so reductive.

Let us be clear that being gender critical and caring about women's rights does not in any way lead people to vote for fascist/far right politicians. It is, however, a very convenient justification for those who are inclined to vote for those politicians anyway. They seem to think that it legitimises their position, but it is abundantly clear that anyone even considering a vote for the likes of Trump or Farage etc does not have an interest in women's rights at all.

I really think we should just ignore these posters and not allow them to derail the threads any more than they already do.

This is always said. Too bad if you don't like it.

It's not everything but likely a factor. Immigration is probably more relevant. Whichever it is Reform have jumped to the lead since the GE.

So ignore as you like, voters will do as they wish.

Of course voters will do as they wish. That is the danger that is always and inherently present in any democracy.

To be clear, I am not suggesting for a minute that we should ignore the rise of fascism. We should do everything we can to challenge and fight against it.

What I'm saying is that we should not give legitimacy to posters who seek to use disingenuous concerns about women's rights to justify their far right inclinations. Their only purpose is to derail discussions about wider issues, and there is no point in engaging with them. It's a waste of time and energy that could be better directed elsewhere.

It was the Munich Security Conference which makes it worse.

He spouted off disinformation whilst claiming the concept of disinformation is some sort of anti-free speech issue.

Thank you for the link however I was trying to find out why the poster called it a “right wing conference”?

He was right, “disinformation” and “misinformation” are bandied about by those who don’t believe in free speech.

Along with “far right” they’re making these terms utterly meaningless.

EasternStandard · 18/02/2025 13:38

@MrsBennetsPoorNerves you can't really control what posters talk about on an open thread on a forum

You are free to scroll past if you want but if others pick up on a topic it's up to them.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 18/02/2025 13:40

But read the second verse.

No other parties or leaders are doing those things. The things that quite rightly we want and expect from our government.

All the others want to take more of our money while giving it away to other countries. They want to look after those we perceive as breaking the law and taking the piss (migrants on boats) while ignoring British homeless and squandering our taxes.

I have sympathy for those who vote for Trump and support Farage.

I have the same stance on the Tories.

There is not one political party that aligns with my views. All are corrupt and hold extreme views one way or another.

Is it too much to ask for a political party that actually cares on a human level about the population they are representing?

Politics is broken. Let’s break it down and start again.

I completely agree that the system doesn't work for ordinary people. That is the reason for the rise of the far right.
