To be exasperated by Vinted sellers

I’m fed up with negotiating with sellers on Vinted with ridiculous prices they want for things. I’ve tried to buy two items this morning. The first item, I could buy brand new off Amazon for the same price by the time the postage and packing and buyers protection had been added on. The item is £58 to buy brand new and I offered £30 which is just over half price. I think this is more than reasonable? The seller said they can’t let it go for less than £40 as it is brand new in the box? So what! If it breaks or doesn’t work properly then I can’t return it? So I want to get it at a bargain price if I’m buying it second hand? Not slightly cheaper than buying it new?

I won’t bore you with the second item but it was a similar situation where the seller was charging 100% of what it is brand new but dropped the price to 70%. With postage and packing this was still 85% new!!

Personally I think that if the item is brand new in the box or with tags then 50% of the purchase price is reasonable. If it has been used then 10%-20% of the purchase price is reasonable. That’s how I sell my items on there as I think it’s fair.

I know that they can charge whatever they like and it’s up to us if we buy it or not but I just wanted to rant a little about it as I find it so frustrating 😅

Just buy it on Amazon?

Sessili · 18/02/2025 12:17

I disagree. I don't think it's normal for everything to lose half its value the minute it leaves the shop, and 90% of its value once you use it.

Toomanyusernamestochoose · 18/02/2025 12:24

Why not just buy on Amazon? The seller has made clear the price they would like for it, if it is too much for you, buy it brand new from a shop.

As a seller, I get fed up of buyers making ridiculous offers when I have clearly stated that I will not accept them. I was selling an item which was £45 on Amazon for £20 brand new, still in packaging (with a receipt from the shop I purchased from). I made it clear in my listing it was priced to sell and I was not going any lower yet I still got countless offers for £12/13 in the first 24 hours (along with requests to post immediately if accepted). Sold for the full price just over 24 hours after posting.

SatinHeart · 18/02/2025 12:28

If it breaks or doesn’t work properly then I can’t return it?

I think if that's a real concern for the particular item then don't get it off Vinted at all tbh.

I buy plenty on Vinted (largely clothes) but don't sell on there. If an item was new and the photos showed the tags still on then I'd pay more than 50% of its original value, as long as the cost including postage worked out less than just getting it brand new from somewhere else.

But stuff on Vinted goes for what someone is willing to pay for it. If they've genuinely overpiced stuff, it won't sell and they'll have to either give up or drop the price. The fact that they are pricing high suggests that in some cases it works for them.

KarmenPQZ · 18/02/2025 12:35

I’m wondering if I’m looking at your item 1 as well! I’ve ‘liked’ an item that very much fits your description but there’s no way I’ll buy it at £40 from vinted plus fees and postage when I can get it new for £55. But it’s a marketplace. I might put in an offer for £30 but seller might reject. It’s their prerogative.

as a seller sometime I reject offers that I might later accept if the item has been on a while. Or if I’m already heading to the shops to post other items.

Achyarms · 18/02/2025 12:36

theyre being unreasonable with prices and will realise with time

you're being unreasonable to not realise they can list at whatever price they fancy

Iwantamarshmallowman · 18/02/2025 12:37

yabu. i hate when buyers offer such low prices. if you can get it new on amazon for the same price then go for it.

IamnotSethRogan · 18/02/2025 12:40

I've never negotiated on anything on Vinted. If I see a price at more then I think it's worth it just move on.

SallyWD · 18/02/2025 12:40

I've had good experiences on Vinted 99% of the time. I only buy cheap stuff though and never haggle .

WateryBottle · 18/02/2025 12:45

I agree. It doesn’t annoy me as such, but I think it’s ridiculous - new or not, if a seller wants people to buy from them with none of the consumer rights, they need to offer an incentive to do so. Expecting to make their money back is crazy.

Oceangrey · 18/02/2025 12:45

I don't bother negotiating, either I'm happy with the price or not.
FWIW I'd pay more than 50% for a new item if I knew it was going to fit etc.

livingonaprayer321 · 18/02/2025 12:56

I think you're being a bit over the top.
Unfortunately there's no option to stop offers and I get fed up of buyers offering sometimes a lot less than I'm asking. I put that price because I want that price, nothing less.
It's the sellers prerogative to put whatever price they want. They paid for it, it's theirs to do as they wish.
If you don't like it, scroll on till you find something you do.

TwistedWonder · 18/02/2025 13:00

I buy and sell on Vinted and if anyone offered me half of what my item was priced as I’d delete and not even give them a response because they’re taking piss.

Yes we all slightly over price expecting reasonable offers but just over half - no jog on. Not prepared to pay close to asking price - don’t buy it then

And I’ve always sold my items very quickly so my pricing is obviously fair

DetectiveSleuth · 18/02/2025 13:02

I’m always secretly pleased when a seller turns down my offer and then the item is still on there weeks or months later, sometimes reduced. They clearly haven’t had the interest they’d hoped for and are now desperately trying to get anyone to buy, well it won’t be me 😝

When I sell, I take whatever someone offers because the item is worth precisely zero unless someone buys it 🤷‍♀️

Strawberryfruitcorner · 18/02/2025 13:07

I’ve gone off Vinted a bit lately. I mainly use it to buy and sell my kids clothes but since it’s got more popular it’s full of people trying to flog faded worn out items labelled ‘very good’ for prices I’d expect to pay in the sale brand new!

Don’t get me started on dirty kids sandals for £15 (Clarks sell them brand new for £24).

BarneyRonson · 18/02/2025 13:08

I see things my offers haven’t been accepted on, still there months later. Some sellers don’t seem to realise there are always similar items to buy, often from sellers that just want to get rid for a couple of quid. Sellers that message saying ‘I can post today’..I usually unfavourite their item. Without offering a discount they are wasting my time, I don’t want their messages!

ABunchOfBadBitches · 18/02/2025 13:16

Womp womp

dutysuite · 18/02/2025 13:24

I’d just buy it on Amazon. I price reasonably and I don’t accept offers anymore because the last time I accepted an offer and sob story I found the item being resold for double the price I sold it to the buyer for! Some people deliberately want things at a cheaper price so they can resell which is actually against Vinted’s policy.

Crispynoodle · 18/02/2025 13:28

YABU if you don't like the price you need to move on. I have recently bought skin care on Vinted that I can't get where I live which was more than it costs new. (The shop doesn't offer online buying 🤬) I was happy to buy for the convenience. I've had 99% good transactions on Vinted

Yep agree with this.

I've had a few people recently offering ludicrously low prices, when I've literally just listed something. If something has been on a while, I'll be much more likely to take an offer, but not when something has just been uploaded, and is in immaculate condition.

Agree. I recently listed a dress that cost £129 worn once and I priced at £45

Within about 2 minutes of listing, I had an offer of £23 followed by increased offers of an extra £1 at a time.

I sold for £40 same day I listed

AmusedGoose · 18/02/2025 13:45

Anything is only worth what someone will pay for it. Simple.

ChaoticCrumble · 18/02/2025 13:47

You need to think about timing too. If I've listed something for £40 and ten mins later I get an offer for £20 I'm not going to accept it right away. If you're interested right away, someone else might be too and prepared to spend more. In these cases I usually say I drop the price over time but can't go that low just yet.

There's been times when this is a mistake and I should've just sold it early. But plenty of times I've made more by hanging on.

I do agree if there's only a few £ off new, and you can't fully trust the condition, you should just buy new.

Karou · 18/02/2025 13:48

I’m amazed that you are taking it so personally. They can ask what they like and you can choose to either pay, haggle or scroll on to the next item.

i sell and buy all the time on Vinted and I haggle over everything, for me it’s part of the experience and fun of the site. It’s not personal if I offer half the asking price for an item and I wouldn’t consider it personal if they reject my offer.

Similar on eBay as well for me last week.

£250 item. Had an offer of £80 then £90. As I was going in to both block the idiot and add a minimum offer to the listing it sold at £250.

I know God loves a trier, but come on.
