To be exasperated by Vinted sellers

I’m fed up with negotiating with sellers on Vinted with ridiculous prices they want for things. I’ve tried to buy two items this morning. The first item, I could buy brand new off Amazon for the same price by the time the postage and packing and buyers protection had been added on. The item is £58 to buy brand new and I offered £30 which is just over half price. I think this is more than reasonable? The seller said they can’t let it go for less than £40 as it is brand new in the box? So what! If it breaks or doesn’t work properly then I can’t return it? So I want to get it at a bargain price if I’m buying it second hand? Not slightly cheaper than buying it new?

I won’t bore you with the second item but it was a similar situation where the seller was charging 100% of what it is brand new but dropped the price to 70%. With postage and packing this was still 85% new!!

Personally I think that if the item is brand new in the box or with tags then 50% of the purchase price is reasonable. If it has been used then 10%-20% of the purchase price is reasonable. That’s how I sell my items on there as I think it’s fair.

I know that they can charge whatever they like and it’s up to us if we buy it or not but I just wanted to rant a little about it as I find it so frustrating 😅

Just buy elsewhere. I sometimes see people trying to sell items for more than they cost new but if I make an offer, a reasonable offer and they don't accept, I leave it at that.

Although once, I did message a seller to say that the item she was selling once postage etc was added, it was way more than ordering the exact same product from the shop, Next. She didn't care and it's still for sale ages later.

My pet peeve is buyers not leaving feedback when they receive the item and sellers that leave it right up to the very last minute possible to send.

That said , I love Vinted and have had some great buys!

Agree this happened with the solar paneled toy tolls from IKEA brand new they were £15 but they discontinued those and repoaced with battery operated. So then everyone in vinted started to sell the older models as "rare" and charged £25 for a used toy till. All becuase it was the older version that is solar paneled. Blooming cheek.
I contacted a seller and asked what she was thinking and she harped on about it being rare now and exclusive. Like B please! It is a used toy. Should be £3-5

I also hate it with Lovevery toys and sets. A set is £80 brand new. And your have some MOFOS selling for £90-120 used. Used!
When I offer £30 they get nasty.
sigh

I disagree. I don't think it's normal for everything to lose half its value the minute it leaves the shop, and 90% of its value once you use it.

The main point is you have no consumer rights or right to return when you buy off a site like Vinted. A part of the full retail price includes peace of mind and protection should things go wrong with the product.

There is no risk in that sense when you buy retail so I expect an absolute bargain if I'm taking on risk and no consumer protection buying off some random person

Doggymummar · 18/02/2025 20:29

I have been selling in Vinted for about a year. I have over 100 5 star reviews for my old clothes I have sold. I've now bought a consignment to sell as a side hustle and don't want to sell on V as things go too cheap. I've put some on eBay and the prices are going well, was considering whatnot and depop as well. Where do those of you selling get the best prices?

crankytoes · 18/02/2025 20:31

Crispynoodle · 18/02/2025 13:28

YABU if you don't like the price you need to move on. I have recently bought skin care on Vinted that I can't get where I live which was more than it costs new. (The shop doesn't offer online buying 🤬) I was happy to buy for the convenience. I've had 99% good transactions on Vinted

One thing I would never buy second hand is personal products. Skincare and makeup. You have no idea whether it's real or what someone might have put in there. No idea how old it is or how it's been stored like next to a radiator. Not worth the risk.

Another pet peeve is buyers who can’t be arsed to press the everything is ok button which takes 2 seconds meaning you’re delayed getting your money for 2 additional days

That drives me wild. I know you’ve received it and I get that life goes on, opening a package is not the priority but at some point, I’d like to know that you’re accepting, not returning the item.

I buy and sell a lot on Vinted due to big weight loss and mostly, it’s been positive bar me buying stuff because it will fit 🤦🏼‍♀️ I keep hearing that you only wear 20% of your wardrobe. God help me. I will be giving some almost new stuff to charity this week, it’s getting crazy in here!

HeartandSeoul · 18/02/2025 20:44

I recently sold an item that had increased in value, due to no longer being produced. It had previously been available to buy for several months, so not an item that could not be found in the shops at the time it was first made. I checked the sold prices on eBay, and I saw that the item was selling for £15-£20 more than I paid for it. Just to add, it is related to a hobby (I worried some may think it was the nappy cream that is highly sought after right now).

I had a couple of messages asking me why I was selling it for that price, when it was X price originally! I had to explain to them that the item was worth that price, and I would list it at that price. I would happily reduce if it hadn’t sold. Why do they think I would want to sell it for less than it is worth, just so they can make a profit? I think it’s rude to question a price.

I ended up selling it for £6 more than I paid for it, so more than happy with that. Even if it only sold at the price I paid for it, I honestly would not have minded.

EBay is good for certain things eg equestrian clothing go on eBay not Vinted, I find. Larger sizes sell quickly on both platforms. Shoes go fast on Vinted. I have a bunch of jumpers and jackets on for very cheap currently but they aren’t moving. I’d like to know of anywhere else people recommend.

ThinWomansBrain · 18/02/2025 20:51

If I see something I like, and I think the price is good/OK, I buy it,
If I think it's overpriced I don;t bother
can't be bothered faffing around with offers & negotiating the price down,

I haven't sold on there, but thinking about it - I'll look at what similar items are going for & base my pricing on that. If it doesn't sell it can go to a charity shop.

Same. If I’m not 100% sure, I’ll probably favourite it and either the seller sending me an offer may prompt me to buy it or I’ll revisit in a day or two and decide it’s not for me and remove it from my favourites.

If something has been for sale for a few weeks/months and the seller doesn’t look like a frequent user, I’ll send an offer slightly below asking price just to see if they respond are still alive. If they accept it’s a bonus but I’m just checking for signs of online life before I buy usually.

I think some people are buyers inky and perhaps don't know

PoppyRoseBucky · 18/02/2025 21:18

YABU.

You're being ridiculous. If you can get it brand-new from Amazon for a similar price, just do that. Also mentioning buyers protection and postage is hardly the seller's responsibility, is it? It's not for the seller to reduce the cost of the item to enable you to afford those things.

I don't care about people haggling-but damn, make it reasonable. Some people are really offensive with their offers and just low-ball them because they think they can get away with it.

Sure, an item is only worth what someone will pay for it-but just because one person won't pay that cost doesn't mean someone else won't.

Expecting a seller to take less than what they'd like for it because you can't afford it/don't want to pay verges on cheeky or you want them to essentially pay the buyer's protection/postage is cheeky.

Don't get me wrong-there are people who do seem to ask for a lot for items-and I just shrug at them and think that they probably won't sell and will be reduced later. It's their choice what they choose to list their items at and they'll find out the hard way that people may not want to pay that.

I just think in this circumstance if you know you can get it brand new on Amazon for a similar price to what is listed on Vinted why are you trying to haggle the seller down? Just buy on Amazon.

TwistedWonder · 18/02/2025 20:11

A peeve of mine is sellers who message you asking you to press the ok button about 2 1/2 seconds after the tracking says the parcel has been delivered, when you haven't even had a chance to get it off the doorstep yet, much less open it!

On a serious note though, I don't think Vinted makes it clear to buyers that the seller doesn't get paid until they press that button. If they are not sellers as well, they may not know.

satsumaqueen · 19/02/2025 10:44

If you can buy it brand new from Amazon for less, then go and buy it from Amazon. People don’t owe you a favour because it’s on Vinted. Buyers like you drive me absolutely mad.

anniegun · 19/02/2025 10:46

if you dont want to pay the asking price move on, its not that complicated

cramptramp · 19/02/2025 11:17

I'm fed up with buyers trying to negotiate with me on Vinted. If you don't want to pay the price I've stated, don't buy it. It's that simple.

TwistedWonder · 19/02/2025 11:20

I’m happy to listen to a reasonable offer especially after a few days but offering half the asking price 3 minutes after I’ve listed the items is never going to be anything other than a piss take and a waste of time.

Bringmeahigherlove · 19/02/2025 11:21

I don’t think buying second hand is for you if you’re getting this wound up about it! Maybe wait for the January sales.

DiscoBallDiva · 19/02/2025 11:32

I purposely list higher value items for £5 or £10 more than I want for them. I don't have an issue with buyers make reasonable offers especially if an item has been listed for a while. If I'm not happy an offer, I'll just decline it.
I don't really bother listing items that I'd only get a couple of pounds for but I understand why some sellers do this and it can all add up. I wouldn't haggle with a seller over an item that's only been listed for under a couple of pounds, I think its insulting but each to their own.
I recently bought an item for asking price listed as "very good" condition. It was well worn and TBH I wouldn't of even given it to the charity shop. Luckily the seller agreed to a return.
I agree with others who have said if things like warranty are the issue then just buy it from the actual retailer.

Willyoujust · 19/02/2025 11:48

TwistedWonder · 18/02/2025 13:00

I buy and sell on Vinted and if anyone offered me half of what my item was priced as I’d delete and not even give them a response because they’re taking piss.

Yes we all slightly over price expecting reasonable offers but just over half - no jog on. Not prepared to pay close to asking price - don’t buy it then

And I’ve always sold my items very quickly so my pricing is obviously fair

Edited

I think you have misread my post. I’m not making offers at half of what they are advertising it at. In fact I don’t think Vinted even allows you to make offers that low?

I’m talking about offering half price of what the item cost new.

I’m always secretly pleased when a seller turns down my offer and then the item is still on there weeks or months later, sometimes reduced. They clearly haven’t had the interest they’d hoped for and are now desperately trying to get anyone to buy, well it won’t be me 😝

When I sell, I take whatever someone offers because the item is worth precisely zero unless someone buys it 🤷‍♀️

Yes I’m exactly the same!

I don't sell on Vinted, but I do sell on eBay and the amount of people who make ridiculous offers is annoying! In fact, it's got so bad in recent months that I now put as high a price as I can so that if/when a person does make a stupid offer I just block them and move on. Some people (I'm not saying you here OP) just think that people should give them stuff for nothing. You have to also consider the time it takes for some items to be packaged up, especially if they're bulky or large, they've then got to arrange collection or delivery of the item, that time doesn't come for nothing. I'm damned sure I'm not going to talk 50% of what I've put the price at.

Again I think you’ve misread my post. I am talking about offering 50% of what the item cost new. Not 50% of their asking price.

I agree as there is no buyer protection with returns and some do not accept returns. So vinted still need to figure that out.

I also find is cheeky when and item is suoer valuable and someone asks for a ridiculous price.
I.e i sold a vintage burberry coat with 1 million photos to show brand new condition. Purchased for £500 and as it was vintage I put it on for £300 had some cheeky buggers request it for £50! Blooming cheek.

Vinted still needs improvements on both ends.

Just out of interest, how do you do secure and fully-insured postage for your high-value items?

Hellzbellz25 · 19/02/2025 12:20

People are so greedy, I found some Ralph Lauren joggers in the charity shop last week for £6, sold them that afternoon for £18 and made a quick 12 quid and now the lad who bought them has them for sale at £50! I hope no one buys them

So it’s okay for you to make 200% profit but if someone else does it, it’s greedy? Make it make sense 😆
