To be exasperated by Vinted sellers

I’m fed up with negotiating with sellers on Vinted with ridiculous prices they want for things. I’ve tried to buy two items this morning. The first item, I could buy brand new off Amazon for the same price by the time the postage and packing and buyers protection had been added on. The item is £58 to buy brand new and I offered £30 which is just over half price. I think this is more than reasonable? The seller said they can’t let it go for less than £40 as it is brand new in the box? So what! If it breaks or doesn’t work properly then I can’t return it? So I want to get it at a bargain price if I’m buying it second hand? Not slightly cheaper than buying it new?

I won’t bore you with the second item but it was a similar situation where the seller was charging 100% of what it is brand new but dropped the price to 70%. With postage and packing this was still 85% new!!

Personally I think that if the item is brand new in the box or with tags then 50% of the purchase price is reasonable. If it has been used then 10%-20% of the purchase price is reasonable. That’s how I sell my items on there as I think it’s fair.

I know that they can charge whatever they like and it’s up to us if we buy it or not but I just wanted to rant a little about it as I find it so frustrating 😅

Yeah I had this. I bid £95 for a £160 designer bag that was used. The bag is still for sale weeks later. I went to offer a higher bid but they had blocked me. I didn't think my bid was that bad tbh

The bag was on sale at £160 used or it would be £160 if bought new?

If it was £160 used and you offered £95, I’d block you too. You’re a time waster rather than a serious buyer.

SaveMeFromMyBoobs · 22/02/2025 21:01

It does frustrate me how often I see a dress on 'only worn once, pristine condition' for £50, then on the same places website it's on sale for £40! I've offered £25 and they say 'no way I paid £80 and only wore it once' and seem to think me being able to get it new from the shop for £40 is irrelevant.

I’m amazed that you are taking it so personally. They can ask what they like and you can choose to either pay, haggle or scroll on to the next item.

i sell and buy all the time on Vinted and I haggle over everything, for me it’s part of the experience and fun of the site. It’s not personal if I offer half the asking price for an item and I wouldn’t consider it personal if they reject my offer.

I'm also surprised pp seem to take this so personally. I haggle over everything - I usually offer the lowest price the app will accept as an opening bid, then increase if they won't take it.

I've got some great bargains and all the stuff I've had so far has been good quality. I also haggle with people when I'm selling stuff.

I enjoy Vinted - I think I enjoy it more than normal shopping

fair enough, but I don't have time or will to deal with this. If someone offers me a ridiculously low price, I just block them, it's quicker than dealing with future silly offers!

I don't really get the logic of blocking someone who's interested in buying your stuff? You're actively blocking someone who wants to give you money and has hinted they're interested with an opening offer.

Surely if you want a much higher price just offer them a higher counter offer? They might accept. That's what haggling is

DryIce · 22/02/2025 22:01

I tend to save my good quality/brand stuff for vinted, as I don't find it worth storing and packing unless you can make £10-£20 minimum for an item. Mostly they sell, but if they don't I'm usually happy to keep them or just take them next time I go to the charity shop.

I imagine there are other sellers like me - not desperate to sell, and know what their floor price is. So wild offers are ignored

henlake7 · 22/02/2025 22:02

Got to admit I get annoyed with the amount of people selling things 'brand new, with tags' when the item only has the removeable brand tag attached not the price tag.
Like we can't tell the difference!

CrotchetyQuaver · 22/02/2025 23:52

I share your frustration, but ultimately it's up to them as it's their loss. I offered £20 for a £25 summer dress that was listed 6 months ago, it got declined and I just thought oh well, I don't really need it! I thought I wasn't being cheeky but the seller clearly did...

bakebeans · 23/02/2025 08:47

Yes I’ve seen this. I’ve made it clear to the seller it’s the same price retail so they are not going to get a sale.
I tried to sell a coat which which brand new and I advertised it at half the price of what it was retail but people were offering me £5!
I’ve stopped bothering now x

I am not using Vinted to haggle though. People are free to do it, but I can't be bothered.

If you make a ridiculously low offer, I'll decline. Then it's likely you will up the offer by a few pennies/ pounds, then again I'll decline, then you'll make another offer. I honestly can't be bothered.

I accept reasonable offers usually, especially if I have to drop things at the post office anyway. Half the time people don't come back to buy, which is fine, but I am not playing a haggling game on top of that.

It's the "brand new without tag" that annoys me. It usually means they wore it once or twice. At least be honest about it.

DaphneduM · 23/02/2025 10:00

I think you have to keep an open mind - you can sometimes have disappointment with Vinted purchases. I never bother haggling - I either want to buy something at the price offered or I don't. And I always make sure that I press the button to say received and give feedback promptly.

I've had a few duds, but given the amount of things I've bought, that's to be expected. I've had some amazing clothes - things I couldn't possibly aspire to buying new. I've also found 99.9% of sellers genuine and lovely. Fashion is my hobby and I love vintage accessories - Vinted has been a treasure trove for me.

Think I’ve just seen the ultimate piss take seller on Vinted. Dress that was originally £99 and then reduced to £59 on the labels own website someone trying to sell for £160!!!

Bet it’s gonna be on there a while

I don't understand why it's a piss take?

No one has to buy it. It's a bad move because it's unlikely to sell, but so what if it does?

Shizzlestix · 24/02/2025 15:35

It's driving me a bit nuts this week. Selling an jacket for £3-I mean, come on, brand new with tags. Someone offered £1.80, I mean it's barely worth driving to the locker for that!

Use royal mail collect at home service and you don't have to drive anywhere. They come and pick all your parcels up. It is that just eBay?

Where's it from?

MarkWithaC · 24/02/2025 16:18

If someone want to sell something for £40, offering £30 is a big drop from the seller's POV. YABU.

A house on my street recently sold for £350K, but I'm going to list mine for £500K and get SUPER pissy if anyone offers lower because I want to sell it for £500K. That'll totally work, they'll understand that's too big a drop from my POV and give me what I want 🙃

JustFeedMeCake · 26/02/2025 06:51

Bloody Vinted. I just found out that even though you can switch the Royal Mail option off, sellers can still select it! It's not easy for me to get to the PO so that's why it switched it off. Now someone has bought an item using RM. Ridiculous.

I have it prominently written on my bio at the top and also top of every listing that I don't do RM and will cancel any sales that choose this ... only had to do so once, buyer was not happy but tough shit - read the info of your purchase.

I once saw a "brand new with tags" bikini on my feed ... in pictures the seller was clearly wearing it on holiday. Not just that but at a foam party. Piss taker.

People are grim Envy

I've never negotiated on anything on Vinted. If I see a price at more then I think it's worth it just move on.

Me too.

IMO sellers are under no obligation to sell for a reasonable price - they can stick any price they like on and good luck to them if someone will pay it.

mogtheforg3tfulcat · 26/02/2025 07:11

I hate vinted for this. I always price things really low - don't think I've ever sold anything for more than a fiver. But you always get someone offering £1 for an item that was already only £2.50. The whole thing just becomes totally pointless then - it's too much effort to photograph, list and take things to the post office for £1.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 26/02/2025 08:48

Absolutely - time is money.

I have found almost consistently when selling that buyers who make a stupid offer, of if I accept then follow up with a "how quick can you post" type of message then are the ones who don't bother clicking to say all is ok when they receive it meaning I have to wait forever for auto payment for my £1 Confused
