To be exasperated by Vinted sellers

I’m fed up with negotiating with sellers on Vinted with ridiculous prices they want for things. I’ve tried to buy two items this morning. The first item, I could buy brand new off Amazon for the same price by the time the postage and packing and buyers protection had been added on. The item is £58 to buy brand new and I offered £30 which is just over half price. I think this is more than reasonable? The seller said they can’t let it go for less than £40 as it is brand new in the box? So what! If it breaks or doesn’t work properly then I can’t return it? So I want to get it at a bargain price if I’m buying it second hand? Not slightly cheaper than buying it new?

I won’t bore you with the second item but it was a similar situation where the seller was charging 100% of what it is brand new but dropped the price to 70%. With postage and packing this was still 85% new!!

Personally I think that if the item is brand new in the box or with tags then 50% of the purchase price is reasonable. If it has been used then 10%-20% of the purchase price is reasonable. That’s how I sell my items on there as I think it’s fair.

I know that they can charge whatever they like and it’s up to us if we buy it or not but I just wanted to rant a little about it as I find it so frustrating 😅

A peeve of mine is sellers who message you asking you to press the ok button about 2 1/2 seconds after the tracking says the parcel has been delivered, when you haven't even had a chance to get it off the doorstep yet, much less open it!

On a serious note though, I don't think Vinted makes it clear to buyers that the seller doesn't get paid until they press that button. If they are not sellers as well, they may not know.

Edited

Yeah, I had no idea this delays the payment. I never press the button but I will now.

I prefer eBay in general as I can have specific searches and get an email if that thing is listed. I don't think Vinted does this but someone correct me if I'm wrong please!

Vinted I use for kids clothes as I'm less specific about what I want to buy. It's some nice dungarees to fit a 7 year old rather than a particular dress I tried on once but couldn't afford full price.

Also on eBay you can be specific about whether you want offers.

@Willyoujust

@Hellzbellz25
People are so greedy, I found some Ralph Lauren joggers in the charity shop last week for £6, sold them that afternoon for £18 and made a quick 12 quid and now the lad who bought them has them for sale at £50! I hope no one buys them

So it’s okay for you to make 200% profit but if someone else does it, it’s greedy? Make it make sense 😆

The lack of self awareness is staggering 😂
Are you seriously outraged at someone doing what you did only better @Hellzbellz25

dudsville · 19/02/2025 14:13

I really like vinted, but I am perhaps using it differently. The things I buy are a certain brand and a specific item that I missed out on - not general shopping. They are still pricey, but I only buy if I agree the item is worth the price asked. The things I sell are also this brand, and in great condition - I'm not a shop. I own the item, I can wait yonks for it to sell, or it may never sell but I'm not giving it away for a song. I price with the expectation that I will take £10-20 off at a buyers' request, and it makes me uncomfortable when someone doesn't ask for a reduced price because I think the item isn't worth that, but they clearly do.

PickledElectricity · 19/02/2025 14:16

I first used Vinted about 2 years ago to buy lots of baby bundles for really good prices.

Now everything seems so dear. I think people are trying to make money instead of having a clear out. So I end up buying new stuff more often than not. It's a shame.

Hellzbellz25 · 19/02/2025 19:09

The point I'm making is I could have easily got £30 or £40 but I accepted the first offer to do someone a favour and make their day because I'm kind whereas he wants to rinse every penny out of them on Vinted, I'm not outraged I just think its funny!

coronafiona · 19/02/2025 20:32

See my whole thing about vinted is that it's inconvenient and stuff is second hand and non returnable. So I expect it cheap I'm afraid. In my defence I also sell stuff cheaply.

Why not just buy on Amazon? The seller has made clear the price they would like for it, if it is too much for you, buy it brand new from a shop.

As a seller, I get fed up of buyers making ridiculous offers when I have clearly stated that I will not accept them. I was selling an item which was £45 on Amazon for £20 brand new, still in packaging (with a receipt from the shop I purchased from). I made it clear in my listing it was priced to sell and I was not going any lower yet I still got countless offers for £12/13 in the first 24 hours (along with requests to post immediately if accepted). Sold for the full price just over 24 hours after posting.

I get this on eBay. I even removed the function to make offers because people were being ridiculous so now they message me instead making ridiculous offers, when it's obvious I don't accept offers because there's no offer button on the item. Buyers seem to want something for nothing.

GiraffesAtThePark · 19/02/2025 20:48

I agree OP. I’ve even seen items that would cost more when you include postage etc than buying new. I have purchased some really great items on Vinted but it takes time to find them.

BeelzebubsHoover · 19/02/2025 20:49

I recently bought a dress in the Wyse sale for £100, down from £250. At the same time the dress was for sale on Vinted for £125. Not the first time I’ve seen that with Wyse dresses

This happens regularly on Vinted. Some sellers don’t keep a close eye on prices and seem unaware (or maybe don’t care) that what they’re selling is now in the original retailer’s sale and is cheaper to buy direct from the retailer (without buyers’ fees and usually free postage too - plus the option to return).

thedogatethecattreats · 19/02/2025 20:55

I never understand why people get so miffed they don't get everything for nothing.

You think it's too much, then don't buy it?

It's not worth my time to sell for next to nothing. If it doesn't sell, I bring it to the charity shop at some point, or I just put it in a recycle bin of the local schools.

I’ve seen it recently too. I bought a dress in Never Fully Dressed pre Christmas salt reduced from £129 to £69. Wore it NYE then sold it for £40.

There’s two identical dresses, same size, currently on Vinted one up for £75 the other for £80 both worn. Yet it’s still £69 brand new on NFD website.

Lovelysummerdays · 19/02/2025 21:13

I don’t haggle on vinted I buy ( or not) at the price set. I tend to buy nicer brands and bargain hunt so looking at 10-20% of the original retail price. I feel like it must be very irritating as a seller.

YouveGotAFastCar · 19/02/2025 21:24

Willyoujust · 19/02/2025 12:01

Exactly this 👏

It’s not listed for you in those circumstances though, is it. It’s listed for people who can’t get it from Amazon or wherever.

Look at the Aldi toy drops, they go onto Vinted for 150% of what they sell for, and most sell… because people can’t get to Aldis. They don’t drive or they don’t have one nearby or whatever, and therefore their only way of getting the toy is paying over the odds.

If you’ve got a straight choice of new or old with not much financial difference, you’d go for new because of the consumer protection. Other people will overpay on Vinted because they have no other option.

I mean I sold my old Apple TV for four times what it cost new; because I hadn’t updated it, which meant it could be jail-broken and used to stream locked-down content… that was eBay and years and years ago, but it had a lot of value to people who wanted that ability. Probably none at all to people who just thought I’d overpriced an outdated tech product 😅

couldabutdidnt · 19/02/2025 21:27

People are sometimes entirely clueless as to the value of their used stuff. I include myself in that category. I’m often taken aback by the auto generated suggested and ‘similarly sold’ prices on Vinted and eBay - like £2.50 for a gorgeous sweater that I’ve worn once. I do get it though. Whack on buyer protection and postage and factor in the general risk of buying second hand and faff factor of Vinted (I must be tight as I never pay 60p extra for home delivery ha) and you can understand why. Price to sell I say.

SezFrankly · 20/02/2025 06:59

Vinted etiquette confuses me. My teen DD was on there right from the start and assured me that haggling was expected. I was horrified she was offering £1.50 for something listed at £2 and refused to participate 😂

A couple of years later everything is almost as expensive as it is in the shop and no offers. The kids are back on SHEIN and it all seems a bit pointless.

mamajong · 20/02/2025 07:08

Yabu, it's up to them what they charge and up to you what you pay or don't pay. If the same price as brand new just buy it brand new, not worth wasting energy because someone doesn't price things the way you think they should

Loopytiles · 20/02/2025 07:14

YABU, it’s just simple supply & demand.

Factors other than newness will affect prices some buyers are willing to pay, eg availability of an item elsewhere.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 20/02/2025 07:22

I have only bought a couple of things but just paid the asking price as I though it was worth it. A pair of boots for £12 and a jacket for £10. Both items have been great and were no longer available in regular shops. I couldn't be arsed to negotiate for a few quid. If they are selling something currently available in a shop I'd just buy it from the shop.

.. what? How were you being kind? You didn’t sell it for the price you paid for it, or even less, you sold it for a profit. The person who bought it is doing the exact same thing, just making a more of a profit. You’re doing the exact same thing, please don’t act otherwise!

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 20/02/2025 07:30

As a seller piss take less than half price offers irritate me too ... I'll often decline these and my item may still be unsold several weeks later but that doesn't bother me as I'll drop it at a charity shop at some point. I'm not prepared to spend time and effort taking photos of items, uploading, storing carefully, wrapping well and then going to a parcel drop off point unless I get the price I want. I'm not desperate to make £3 and my time is a cost too.

Sometime if I get a low ball offer (I always acknowledge every offer, even piss taking ones, with a personal message) and I politely decline, that item suddenly gets lots of favourites the original potential buyer comes back and buys at full anyway so it often pays to wait.

Ickity · 20/02/2025 08:39

I’m one of those who will flog it cheap to get rid of give it to charity. Others are mental. I wanted a blakely hoodie. It was up for £50 or something with postage worked out about £1 less than buying direct from blakeley with their new customer 10% discount.

I messaged the seller asking if they’d reduce on that basis and they said no.

can't imagine it ever sold.

rosegoldsequin · 20/02/2025 08:42

I buy things related to a hobby on there. Some sellers will list items which originally cost £30 new for £300+, as they are discontinued and therefore rare. They rarely sell.

If they do sell at a profit like this they’ll now have to declare and pay tax. I’m hoping this stops a lot of this.

I never put in offers, if I’m not happy with the price I scroll past.

I don’t sell on there at all; I give everything to charity as I can’t be doing with the hassle.

thedogatethecattreats · 20/02/2025 09:23

Exasperated by vinted sellers? I find that amusing, getting on CF territory, trying to get everything for nothing.

You think it's too expensive? Just scroll past and don't buy.

If it has been used then 10%-20% of the purchase price is reasonable.
reasonable for you to decide to buy as a rule? Yes, absolutely. You make your own decisions
reasonable for others to put their item for sale? No 😂They don't have to accommodate you!

I am one who doesn't check prices after I listed an item, it's not worth my time frankly. If it's cheaper new, then buy new, I don't care that much.

If I have sold a lot of things and need to go to the post office, I will very likely accept offers because I am going that way anyway. If that would be the only item, then no. It's not worth my time. I don't care that much if things sell or not, they are packed out of the way, I just get rid of the lot after a while.

Not everyone uses Vinted as a business.

ThatSharonCurleysUpThePole · 20/02/2025 09:27

PoppyRoseBucky · 18/02/2025 21:18

YABU.

You're being ridiculous. If you can get it brand-new from Amazon for a similar price, just do that. Also mentioning buyers protection and postage is hardly the seller's responsibility, is it? It's not for the seller to reduce the cost of the item to enable you to afford those things.

I don't care about people haggling-but damn, make it reasonable. Some people are really offensive with their offers and just low-ball them because they think they can get away with it.

Sure, an item is only worth what someone will pay for it-but just because one person won't pay that cost doesn't mean someone else won't.

Expecting a seller to take less than what they'd like for it because you can't afford it/don't want to pay verges on cheeky or you want them to essentially pay the buyer's protection/postage is cheeky.

Don't get me wrong-there are people who do seem to ask for a lot for items-and I just shrug at them and think that they probably won't sell and will be reduced later. It's their choice what they choose to list their items at and they'll find out the hard way that people may not want to pay that.

I just think in this circumstance if you know you can get it brand new on Amazon for a similar price to what is listed on Vinted why are you trying to haggle the seller down? Just buy on Amazon.

I completely agree. If a potential buyer tells me they can buy my item on blah blah for whatever I always ask why are you bothering me then? Sometimes I even look up said item and send them the link. 😆 The last time I did that was for a brand new unopened bottle of perfume. The company no longer ships to the UK. I was selling it for the exact same price listed but didn't include the original shipping fees and associated taxes (which for this brand many sellers do). They didn't buy the item but it did sell an hour or 2 later to someone else from the same area so could've still been the same person. 🤔
As for my basic clothing/footwear items I always take the postage/buyers protection into account when pricing plus I always check to see what that same/similar item is selling for and price slightly under. So it really pisses me off when I receive messages (not the automatic offers) from buyers wheedling about postage and associated fees.
