To be exasperated by Vinted sellers

I’m fed up with negotiating with sellers on Vinted with ridiculous prices they want for things. I’ve tried to buy two items this morning. The first item, I could buy brand new off Amazon for the same price by the time the postage and packing and buyers protection had been added on. The item is £58 to buy brand new and I offered £30 which is just over half price. I think this is more than reasonable? The seller said they can’t let it go for less than £40 as it is brand new in the box? So what! If it breaks or doesn’t work properly then I can’t return it? So I want to get it at a bargain price if I’m buying it second hand? Not slightly cheaper than buying it new?

I won’t bore you with the second item but it was a similar situation where the seller was charging 100% of what it is brand new but dropped the price to 70%. With postage and packing this was still 85% new!!

Personally I think that if the item is brand new in the box or with tags then 50% of the purchase price is reasonable. If it has been used then 10%-20% of the purchase price is reasonable. That’s how I sell my items on there as I think it’s fair.

I know that they can charge whatever they like and it’s up to us if we buy it or not but I just wanted to rant a little about it as I find it so frustrating 😅

I’m amazed that you are taking it so personally. They can ask what they like and you can choose to either pay, haggle or scroll on to the next item.

i sell and buy all the time on Vinted and I haggle over everything, for me it’s part of the experience and fun of the site. It’s not personal if I offer half the asking price for an item and I wouldn’t consider it personal if they reject my offer.

What you call fun and “part of the experience of the site”, other people may consider it time-wasting.

I don’t bother negotiating with obvious timewasters. I just block them. Let them waste someone else’s time. I have enough good buyers that are a pleasure to deal with. No need to waste time with muppets.

Agree. If someone makes a ridiculously low offer, I don’t engage or even bother declining, I just delete.

Its just a waste of everyone time and certainly not ‘fun’

Ive got over 500 5 star reviews, I price fairly and always sold my items at close to the asking price so no need to bother with anyone making piss take offers.

I sold a worn once pair of shoes for £45, bought new for £60. They took a while to sell but we’re just sat in a cupboard in the interim. I don’t like the hassle of packing them up and getting to the post office, so wanted it to be a certain price otherwise I’d just give them to a friend. The seller is under no obligation to sell at your price.

I think some buyers don’t realise that not everyone is desperate to sell. Sometimes we’re just opportunistic sellers. My things are priced to sell but I’m under no pressure to sell them so people making ridiculous offers are just wasting my time and filling my inbox. Even more irritating is the sad face messages some buyers then send when I’ve sold an item (usually at asking price) that they made some pisstake offer on that I’ve ignored.

Overitallnow · 18/02/2025 16:07

Yeah I had someone trying to get me down by 50p yesterday on an item I was selling for 10% of what it would cost to buy new (used but vintage and in very good condition). Before I had time to block they'd paid the extra 50p.

Karou · 18/02/2025 16:07

The thing is that it’s not personal, I make offers all the time, then haggle. If the seller blocks me for taking the piss that’s their prerogative, I don’t care. there will be another seller with the same item who will negotiate the price. Taking it personally just because someone has a different way of buying second hand items than you do is just being over sensitive. Vinted is a site that invites you to make offers, you should expect offers to be made.

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 18/02/2025 16:18

I don't sell on Vinted, but I do sell on eBay and the amount of people who make ridiculous offers is annoying! In fact, it's got so bad in recent months that I now put as high a price as I can so that if/when a person does make a stupid offer I just block them and move on. Some people (I'm not saying you here OP) just think that people should give them stuff for nothing. You have to also consider the time it takes for some items to be packaged up, especially if they're bulky or large, they've then got to arrange collection or delivery of the item, that time doesn't come for nothing. I'm damned sure I'm not going to talk 50% of what I've put the price at.

Yes, sensible offers, but not stupid ones. Buyers need to realise that people aren't there for the buyer's entertainment. It's irritating when people think haggling is 'all part of the fun'. It really isn't. In fact, on eBay, I'll tell people why I won't accept their offer - it costs money to pay for postage and packaging (I know on Vinted that's done for you), I also spend a lot of time listing my item. Why do you think sellers should accept your idea of 'fun'? It's quite rude, actually.

NameChangePoP · 18/02/2025 16:24

I sell quite a bit on Vinted (lots of us in the house), but it does get frustrating with lowball offers.
I price my items to sell, think £3-£5 for dresses & jeans. I will only sell new items or 'Very Good' and pride myself in not selling tat.
However, I still get people offering me 60% of the asking price just because they can. Example - I had a beautiful Coast Dress, worn once, immaculate, listed at £10. Numerous offers of £6. I always counter with a 10% reduction, but if they continue to increase by 50p each time I just block and move on.
I think some people put an offer in just because they can - think a 50p discount. What even is the point in that?!
On the flip side there was a set of books I wanted, which on Amazon were £35 new with free prime delivery. Seller had them listed (new) for £35, so I sent an offer of £30 and explained why I was offering this amount politely. She was so rude in her reply that I bought from Amazon instead.
I've realised that Vinted is full of scammers, unrealistics, and CF's!

YouBelongHere · 18/02/2025 16:47

Vinted requires a bit of common sense from buyer and seller - I'd always bought at asking price until the weekend when I spotted a jacket on there for £30 that I really wanted. Noticed it had been listed for 14 months so I offered £25 - would've paid full price if seller had rejected but they accepted. They get to sell the item, I saved a bit of money, winner.

I sell on there and have been lucky not to have many timewasters. As others have said it's about testing the waters. I uploaded a video game and it got snapped up so I priced the other video games I put on higher and all but one got snapped up - that game got offers with a couple of quid knocked off so I accepted that's what it was worth and accepted the offers.

Again, if I'm selling an item for £5 and 6 months after it's listed someone offers £3 I probably wouldn't say no.

A lot of people price high so that if someone sends a slightly lower offer the buyer feels like they're getting a bargain and seller is still getting the amount of money they were willing to sell for - again though this depends on common sense.

I think your maths is a bit strange though OP - so if I bought a PS5, played one game and then decided it wasn't actually for me I should sell it for £45?

Bettybonce · 18/02/2025 16:56

I'm fed up with buyers making ridiculous offers. I have items on there for sale at very reasonable prices and I hate getting silly offers on things that are already an absolute bargain.

ThatbloodyRoblox · 18/02/2025 18:07

I get fed up of really low offers.I generally sell NWT items and some are higher end high street. I had a dress this week that had a load of £30 less than asking price offers in first few hours. I even had one person say they love it and if they could afford to buy it new they would. The dress was new and £160 less than rrp!
I sold it on eBay same day!

Legodaisy · 18/02/2025 18:13

I think some people put an offer in just because they can - think a 50p discount. What even is the point in that?!

As a Vinted buyer, I usually make an offer because I've clicked through and discovered how stupid the fees are. E.g. a top for £10 - lovely. Click 'Buy it now', and an unexpected £6 of postage and buyer fees are added on. So the cheeky offer is usually to try and knock it back down to something resembling the advertised price.

Often the overpriced postage & fees will take something from 'secondhand/bargain' territory to 'might as well buy a new one in the shops for the same price' territory.

BootballJoy · 18/02/2025 18:28

Neither have I! I didn't realise haggling was so common. Something to consider although I'll probably forget - if I think the listed price is good so much quicker and easier just to buy.

Sorry, eta that was meant to be a reply to @IamnotSethRogan

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 18/02/2025 18:31

I'm fed up with buyers thinking that as a seller I should want to negotiate or accept their absurd offer. If you don't like the price then don't buy, very simple. I wouldn't have even responded to your offers they were that ridiculous

Agree. Most of my clothes are Never Fully Dressed and worn once. So these are dresses and tips that cost £80-£130 that are immaculate and being sold for £20-£45 and I get ridiculous offers within minutes of loading.

If people want cheaper clothes, buy cheaper clothes but don’t expect good quality, perfect condition items for peanuts when they’re already well priced.

Kelvingrove · 18/02/2025 18:38

I have sold on Vinted but not bought. Would someone mind telling me more about the buyers fees on top of the price of the item?

Champere · 18/02/2025 18:50

I’m fed up of sellers not sending things in time, then messaging after I’ve been refunded asking if I want the item. Yes I did a week ago when I paid for it but not now you’ve wasted my time and been on the app since I paid.
Why bother listing if you have no intention of posting in time?

amylou8 · 18/02/2025 19:02

I resell for a living and am Pro on vinted. I really dislike the whole offer culture on there, I want to be able to list it for the price I want, take it or leave it. All of this haggling and offers and counter offers is a waste of everyone's energy.
OP they're entitled to as whatever price they like, and you're under absolutely no obligation to buy it. I'd be politely directing you to Amazon.

Buyer protection is listed on your price ,
it does vary on percentage plus postage of approx £3 to home , £2.30 to a pick u point or locker .
But to give you an example , a £1
Item is generally going to cost you £4 inc postage and fees which is ridiculous so I never buy unless i can bundle more than 1 item from that seller

JustFeedMeCake · 18/02/2025 20:02

Just buy elsewhere. I sometimes see people trying to sell items for more than they cost new but if I make an offer, a reasonable offer and they don't accept, I leave it at that.

Although once, I did message a seller to say that the item she was selling once postage etc was added, it was way more than ordering the exact same product from the shop, Next. She didn't care and it's still for sale ages later.

My pet peeve is buyers not leaving feedback when they receive the item and sellers that leave it right up to the very last minute possible to send.

That said , I love Vinted and have had some great buys!

Another pet peeve is buyers who can’t be arsed to press the everything is ok button which takes 2 seconds meaning you’re delayed getting your money for 2 additional days

JustFeedMeCake · 18/02/2025 20:12

@TwistedWonder yes! That too. Very annoying.

FTHC · 18/02/2025 20:16

When I sell I just list it for more than I want, expecting the buyers to make an offer. I thought most sellers did?

MixedBananas · 18/02/2025 20:19

I agree as there is no buyer protection with returns and some do not accept returns. So vinted still need to figure that out.

I also find is cheeky when and item is suoer valuable and someone asks for a ridiculous price.
I.e i sold a vintage burberry coat with 1 million photos to show brand new condition. Purchased for £500 and as it was vintage I put it on for £300 had some cheeky buggers request it for £50! Blooming cheek.

Vinted still needs improvements on both ends.
