To be exasperated by Vinted sellers

I’m fed up with negotiating with sellers on Vinted with ridiculous prices they want for things. I’ve tried to buy two items this morning. The first item, I could buy brand new off Amazon for the same price by the time the postage and packing and buyers protection had been added on. The item is £58 to buy brand new and I offered £30 which is just over half price. I think this is more than reasonable? The seller said they can’t let it go for less than £40 as it is brand new in the box? So what! If it breaks or doesn’t work properly then I can’t return it? So I want to get it at a bargain price if I’m buying it second hand? Not slightly cheaper than buying it new?

I won’t bore you with the second item but it was a similar situation where the seller was charging 100% of what it is brand new but dropped the price to 70%. With postage and packing this was still 85% new!!

Personally I think that if the item is brand new in the box or with tags then 50% of the purchase price is reasonable. If it has been used then 10%-20% of the purchase price is reasonable. That’s how I sell my items on there as I think it’s fair.

I know that they can charge whatever they like and it’s up to us if we buy it or not but I just wanted to rant a little about it as I find it so frustrating 😅

I buy and sell on Vinted. It's not specifically sellers or buyers that are the issue - it's people (some people not all).

Fortunately most of my transactions have been great but I don't tend to put very low offers in for stuff - I generally decide if what they have it listed for is a fair price that's acceptable to me, if it's something that's been listed for a while I might offer a couple of quid less.

I also never buy stuff I need urgently because people have lives to work around posting and couriers are sometimes slow. If it's Tuesday and I needed a dress for Saturday I'd go to a shop or order from a retailer with next day delivery.

I've had slightly more issues with selling than buying.

I hate Vinted's new policy with offers where if you accept it lowers the price on your visible listing unless you go back in and manually change it. So many buyers ghost you after having an offer accepted. I don't particularly care that they do that - it's par for the course but I hate that my item is now at that offer price, so if I forget to change it back the next person will come along and offer a tenner less than that price.

I've also been burnt by agreeing to reserve items for a few days then the buyer going awol. Not doing that again. If you don't have the money for this right now then tough.

My main concern is disputes because Vinted don't seem to have a satisfactory way of resolving them especially postage disputes. I had an item that the courier marked as delivered but the buyer claimed they never received. We were both stuck in the Vinted dispute process for a week with nothing more than an AI bot. She didn't have her item and my money was being held by Vinted. Luckily in the end one of the neighbours showed up with it and she cancelled the dispute so I was paid.

For this reason I won't buy or sell anything on Vinted for a price I couldn't stomach losing which for me is a ceiling of about £50. In reality most of my listings and purchases are £20 and under.

Me too.

IMO sellers are under no obligation to sell for a reasonable price - they can stick any price they like on and good luck to them if someone will pay it.

I completely agree that this is true - but said sellers also can’t complain about people making offers. Vinted allows offers, and people shouldn’t use Vinted to sell if they object to receiving them.

The bag was on sale at £160 used or it would be £160 if bought new?

If it was £160 used and you offered £95, I’d block you too. You’re a time waster rather than a serious buyer.

Without knowing more about the bag you cannot draw that conclusion. It could easily be the seller is way out on their valuation and that the offer was fair.

Yep - agree with that about sellers and offers!

Everyone takes prices and offers far too personally Grin

Buying brand new gives you the option to return it and also being under waranty that buying from a vintage seller doesn’t allow. I wouldn’t waste my time unless it was a price I could live without in case it was defective which is something your not sure of.

I get this but I also sell on eBay where I accept returns. So most of my higher priced items of clothing new can be tried and returned if not used

When I sold on eBay I iterated that I wasn’t a store and to go by the measurements provided bc I didn’t except returns. If I made a mistake I would do a return but not bc you didn’t like it.

I also took pictures of my measurements so they couldn’t claim otherwise

Devianinc · 28/02/2025 23:15

I stopped selling on eBay a long time ago bc their fees were outrageous. I hear that they don’t charge to list now but I wonder what percentage they take of your sale now. I haven’t been on it in years.
