To be disgusted at the talks between Russia and the US

1000 replies

SunnyDayInFeb · 17/02/2025 08:58

So Russia and the US are meeting in Saudia Arabia to carve up Ukraine.

And Ukraine, whose people have been fighting and dying since their country was invaded, haven't even been invited to the table.

It's like we are back in the 19th century with the European colonial powers drawing lines on a map to divide Africa between them.

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing surely you get the difference if our troops are drawn into fighting, and a war

Are you ok with that? And providing more troops if necessary

How old are your dc out of interest

My eldest is 16

So yeah couldn’t have more skin in the game!

But he made them do it

His skirt was too short

US and NATO engaged in military activity, training and support in Ukraine for years, US precipitated the Euromaiden. When NATO started flying drones over the Black Sea, what on earth did anyone think would happen next? Zelenskyy surely knew. But, bolstered by NATO promises and his own vainglorious ambitions, he marched his country into the lion's den. Remember the early days, when he was demanding weapons and a no-fly zone? Where did these ideas of his come from? He was never going to get a no-fly zone. He was never going to win.

Going from supplying peacekeeping troops to conscription is a rather large leap.

If Putin attacked to such an extent that European countries had to bring in conscription, the UK would have no choice but to get involved, regardless of whether we previously supplied peacekeeping troops.

You didn’t say “if our troops are drawn into a war” you said “if fighting breaks out”.

But it’s obvious you don’t actually understand anything about the situation, you just feel free to weigh in with opinions based on no understanding of the situation.

Genevieva · 17/02/2025 11:20

Havanananana · 17/02/2025 10:41

@Genevieva Trump specifically spoke about Gazans only leaving if they wanted to (no coercion) but at least they would have the option this way, which they don’t at the moment.

I don't want to derail the Ukraine thread either, so I'll just post Trump's own statements regarding Gaza, which are the completely at odds with what you have posted.

"U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday [4th Feb.] suggested permanently displacing Palestinians from Gaza, saying people there had no alternative but to leave the Palestinian enclave devastated by Israel's military assault." - Reuters.

"President Trump said Saturday that Palestinians won't have the right to return to Gaza, and "I would own this," expanding on his statements last week that the U.S. would "take over" and "own" the Gaza Strip, and that Palestinians should not return."

"The president's latest suggestion that he individually would own any of the land or real estate developments in Gaza under his plan is new, although the president has repeatedly suggested that Palestinians should live elsewhere. His response that Palestinians don't have the right to return is his furthest-reaching statement on the matter... " - February 10, 2025 CBS News

I could also post the quotation where he what I outlined. I didn’t because it does derail thread.

Jasmin71 · 17/02/2025 11:23

As an aside:

With China having bought up most of the rare earth metal mining operations on the continent of Africa;

I strongly doubt that Trump would be as interested in Russian appeasement if Ukraine didn't have an abundance of rare earth metal ores in the areas already annexed by Russia.

The spoils of war are attractive to Trump and his tech industry marionette.

Ukraine is a brave country that has been dealt a bad blow. The USA has undergone state capture and anybody that trusts Putin to honour any so called deal has taken leave of their senses!

EasternStandard · 17/02/2025 11:24

You didn’t say “if our troops are drawn into a war” you said “if fighting breaks out”.

What are you talking about?

As for the last paragraph you seem to be suffering from that. Firstly you back Starmer because I'm guessing you're a loyal Labour voter, so if he talks about peacekeeping troops you're on SM saying great.

There is a risk we get drawn into fighting / war with our troops there. Is that what you want?

Sunak is apparently backing Starmer on this, so not sure it is a matter of being pro-Labour?

To make him out to look like the big guy when actually he is just a posturer. He is irrelevant -leave it to the adults to sort out.

Since when is Trump an adult ?

There is no scenario where Ukraine defeats Russia without NATO boots on the ground and dragging a proxy war which is pretty much at stalemate makes no sense. NATO boots on the ground is effectively WWIII which I hope we all want to avoid. We ready have North Korean soldiers fighting for Russia.

And neither Russia nor Ukraine will get everything they want in order to end this war. I am in total support of ending the war. Don’t forget the longer it goes on the more people die, the more destruction takes place which will all need to be rebuilt. Surely you realize Ukraine will still need help to rebuild right? After all the billions and billions spend t fighting billions and billions more will be needed to support the rebuilding effort.

Russia is also not getting all that they want and they are now even more surrounded by NATO after forcing Sweden and Finland to join.

I am in support of the push to end the war. If Ukraine and Europe want to keep fighting then pay for your war.

The US have already said Ukraine will be involved in the conversations, the initial Saudi meeting was already on the books for diplomatic discussions and yes Ukraine will be a key topic but those are not the main negation meetings. Ukraine will be involved but Ukraine does not get to dictate that other countries continue to fund their war.

TemporaryPosition · 17/02/2025 11:35

SunnyDayInFeb · 17/02/2025 09:50

I do think though that the Russians have been very successful with their propaganda.

I mean if they can get people to believe that the country being attacked and bombed is to blame for the war as they keep outrageously insisting on trying to defend themselves then they can get people to believe anything.

Edited

Plenty of people in the UK believe Blairs invasion of Iraq was fine and he's a great guy. Its more mainstream that the opinion that he should be in prison.

sleepwouldbenice · 17/02/2025 11:38

I don't agree with talks not including Ukraine. Its quite basic. Also zalensky also wants to talk to putin on ant deal, not his henchmen

But putting all thus aside why has Trump, the master negotiator for the free world, capitulated to Putin after just a 90 minute chat, regarding land taken by force and NATO membership? People might respect the route he is taking if he hadn't just caved. It's not a negotiation. it's a gift, Russia is rubbing its hands with glee

It's almost as if there's something in it to maximise the destruction. Are you really saying you think it's worth sending your beloved family over to die in? I can't fathom this view.

Is Sunak a loyal Labour voter now @EasternStandard ? He must be, as he is on SM backing Starmer's stance.

Sorry this makes no sense at all. You are either about something you don’t understand or you aren’t a genuine poster.

This typical report to insult doesn't help your argument.

I assume you can't continue for the reason you've lost the thread of what you're saying. That's fine no need to.

I don't really care tbf I'm more interested in how peacekeeping troops gets us closer to being involved in potential fighting

Oh FFS this always happens every time someone posts anything to suggest that the situation is slightly more complicated than Russia=Evil and Ukraine=Holy.

If you think people are trolling, report them. If not, stop troll hunting.

TheNoonBell · 17/02/2025 11:46

bombastix · 17/02/2025 10:43

It's not the EU! FFS how ignorant. The EU does not have the ability to do anything. It is diplomatically the most useless element in whole scenario.

Macron is having discussions in Paris precisely because the EU is irrelevant. That way he can exclude Victor Orban, Hungary's very own Putin lickspittle.

You need to educate yourself on what Ukraine has been doing to it's ethnic Hungarian minority in Trans-Carpathia for the last decade.

The government banning Hungarian language schools, signage, and eventually speaking Hungarian in public. Then add the Ukrainian ethno-nationalist militias forcing ethnic Hungarians out who had called the area home for a thousand years.

Hopefully it gives you a bit of context on Orban's stance.

No, you have basically been saying all morning that anyone who supports UK supplying peacekeeping troops must be only doing so because they are pro-Starmer/pro-Labour.

You have been proved very wrong and are now reverse ferreting.

Plus Johnson fully supported Ukraine (I loathe him but credit where credit's due) and Starmer backed that stance at the time. It's a cross party position. Will be interesting to see what Nige has to say, though of course he has the luxury of never having to have to take the difficult decisions.
