... to ask you to practise parking it in a single space? Saturday afternoon in the town multistorey and the number of huge cars parked half in a second space is 🤯

They're too big for single spaces a lot of the time.

They're too big full stop.

Fucking ridiculous for city dwellers to have these wanky child killing machines.

If you have one, I judge you.

Absolutely agree! When did we get so big ( and mindless!) to need these monstrosities. 😝

Jealousy

Not at all jealous here. Actually, you can believe me or nit, but we could buy one cash. However, I do have conscience about the rest of society.

This is BS because most have rear parking cameras now..!

But this was a meaningless experiment. My RR has rear view parking cameras and a multitude of sensors. Absolutely zero need to look over your shoulder when reversing.

Plantatreetoday · 17/02/2025 15:59

Tbh I don’t think city dwellers need cars at all.
There’s plenty of public transport so it’s really unnecessary and just leads to masses of pollution in already heavily polluted environments. Especially as there are not enough trees to offset the damage to the environment ( not helped by people pulling trees down for off street parking as well )

So, For the odd day out, just hire if the need arises.

Maybe the money saved on constant road repairs in cities and towns will help support public transport where there isn’t any.

contravertial ?…..it shouldn’t be. Just common sense

lilkitten · 17/02/2025 16:56

Where I am, two multistoreys have bays that are larger. But because they reduce the number of bays, it's more expensive, but if you have a big expensive car presumably you would pay it. I used to use it for the ease of getting DCs in their car seats. I have a Yaris, so I don't struggle at all with bays but getting round the tight bends in old-style multistoreys is still a struggle for my car, no idea how big cars manage it

So people who live in cities, work in that city, have children who go to school near to where they live, always socialise in that city, have no friends or family who live elsewhere, do all their shopping in one city?
You have no idea what you're talking about.

Its a controversial thought, I know, as most people have cars these days

When I was a city dweller I didn’t have a car and walked or used PT everywhere. As did everyone I knew tbh. We hired a car if we were going anywhere well off the public transport route.
It’s not unusual.

However
I know it’s a radical thought for those who are used to jumping in the car.

cramptramp · 17/02/2025 18:50

@Plantatreetoday do you work for the 15 minute cities lot? Because that's exactly what you sound like. Just because no car in a city fitted with your life, it certainly wouldn't have fitted with mine when I was working and now I'm picking up and dropping off grandchildren all over the place.

Where we live it is currently -28C with six inches of packed ice on residential streets.

The cold kills electric vehicles. Tesla's Cybertruck gave up in our city and the memes abound.

I drive an SUV because I need the clearance in the snow. Yes, I have snowtyres. The tailgate is big enough to transport our dog's kennel box.

If anyone is a problem in a parking lot it's the driver's of RAM trucks. Even in good weather they take 1.5 spaces. The best/worst park I ever saw was six spots in a Safeway parking lot. It was fresh out of the showroom.

If you had told 22yo me that I'd be living in the snowzone, driving an SUV with a dog in the tailgate, I'd have laughed at you.

Never say never.

Yes, well maybe I forget that MN is global. Some environments may warrant SUVs. Certainly not in this region of the UK. But there's plenty of 'em all the same.

angela1952 · 18/02/2025 16:24

I've deliberately chosen to buy a smaller car, but even on smaller cars the doors are often larger than they used to be. I'm sick to death of other people opening their doors into my car, I take trouble not to hit other cars when I open my doors, why can't they?
My DH has a bigger car (estate rather than Range Rover or SUV) which does fit in one space but is a tight fit, so we usually park in the quieter areas further from supermarket entrances to avoid parking right next to somebody else and coming back to find a dinged door.

This is just rubbish. I'm older and often have to cart between 2 and 4 GC around with me, as well as heaving shopping and pushchairs about. Some of the clubs that they go to during the holidays are not on bus routes and two of them live an hour's drive away, probably three times that long on the bus and\or train.
I'm not going to give up my car anytime soon, though I do always use public transport when it is practical - for example when there is a usable, regular bus service and I just have two children with me who don't need pushchairs, and I'm not buying a lot of groceries.

OneTC · 18/02/2025 16:38

There should be a scheme like licensing which includes the type of vehicle you are allowed to drive, and for everyone without a really good justification then the only car you can buy is a fiat multipla.

Then we'll find out how many people really need cars

Not everyone lives the same life as you

Cars should be rationed based on need.

TagSplashMaverick · 15/02/2025 14:50

I have one. I live in the country. I also have to frequent the city. Am I supposed to downsize to a ghastly little Geewhizz when I hit the city limits? 😂

If there’s a shitload of free spaces in a supermarket car park, I’ll often straddle two spots because it’s too big for a single space without being damaged by other parkers. I do park far away from the shop though, I’m not a lazy decker trying to park on top of the door.

Why do you need a SUV just because you live in the country? I live in the country and have never owned one. Same as most people I know. Unless it's essential for your work or you live on top of a mountain amid something akin to a moonscape then I don't see what your excuse is.

Am wondering why it’s acceptable to refer to Range Rovers as “chav mobiles” on here? I once went on a date with a man who called the bus a “peasant wagon” and I left immediately. Making judgements on people because of their transport choices is frankly odd.

I think it’s probably just jealousy

Arraminta · 18/02/2025 22:22

I sometimes wonder if people would despise RRs quite so much if they only cost £18K? You know, if they were the exact same shape, size and weight, but only £18K?
