... to ask you to practise parking it in a single space? Saturday afternoon in the town multistorey and the number of huge cars parked half in a second space is 🤯

OP posts:
Squirrelsnut · 15/02/2025 15:01

I could afford one but I'm not a dick.
I get the serious urge to key cars parked like that. I never would. But I really want to.

Am wondering why it’s acceptable to refer to Range Rovers as “chav mobiles” on here? I once went on a date with a man who called the bus a “peasant wagon” and I left immediately. Making judgements on people because of their transport choices is frankly odd.

Typically I wouldn’t but after numerous unpleasant interactions with these rather awful people the shoe most definitely fits.

mugglewump · 15/02/2025 15:04

With number plate recognition, the technology is there to charge these vehicles more to park. If they take up two spaces, they should pay for two spaces.

I've come to the conclusion recently that people who are shit drivers attempt to compensate for this by driving a fucking massive car. So yes, it would marry up with being unable to fucking park.

Toddlerhelpplease123 · 15/02/2025 15:07

Modern cars are just too big. We upgraded to a SUV style. It’s a Volvo xc40. I was worried about it because it looks massive. Surprisingly when I looked at the dimensions it was smaller than my 2 door mini in width.

So sorry OP I think YABU. There’s really not much in it even with the big range rovers.

These threads always trigger bonkers generalisations like this 😂 is it jealousy? Insecurity? Not sure. Funny though.

CurbsideProphet · 15/02/2025 15:09

I remember seeing a video where they tested how many little children lined up behind the car it would take for an SUV driver to be able to see them out of the rearview mirror. I can't remember the exact answer, maybe +. Even the driver was totally shocked and said they didn't realise their view was so hampered that they wouldn't be able to see small children stood behind their car, even if they checked the mirror before reversing.

StrawberrySquash · 15/02/2025 15:09

bravefox · 15/02/2025 14:53

I'm sorry I simply don't accept this. There are more, smaller, cars available then every before. If you purchase a giant car that's your choice. None of the cars I saw today was out the space on both sides.

There are lots of small cars available. But they are small relative to other available cars. Not to historical cars.

e.g. a Fiat 500 is 1m 68. An old Mini is 1m 43. A new Mini is 1 m 74.

And obviously no one in 2025 is about to put three kids in the back of any of those cars.

All of this means there is less free space between cars parked a set distance apart. That's just maths. Obviously people should park as best they can within the lines, but my point is it's made unnecessarily harder.

Alaimo · 15/02/2025 15:09

I never quite understand people who call for bigger parking spaces. Sure, they can be made bigger, but then there will be fewer spaces and everyone will complain about that. Why not just buy a car that fits in a standard parking space? People have been towing caravans and what not for decades, I don't understand why normal estate cars are suddenly deemed not up to the job.

AlwaysPerplexed · 15/02/2025 15:10

In France, there is an enormous registration tax - it's called a malus (up to 70,000 euros - the new Land rover grenadier fits this group) on the largest gas guzzling cars - hence we don't see that many of those over here.

Mind you in our supermarket even normal sized cars seem to like to spread themselves over 2 spaces.

Lemsipper · 15/02/2025 14:51

What on earth does this phrase mean 😂

Have a spoon to help stir the pot

Best done with a long wooded one 😀

Wood = dont get burned yourself
Long = from a distance is safer and use others as a shield.

Better than "poking the bear" or "lobbing a grenade" as one is allowed to remain and watch the carnage road rage.

My parents were involved in a motorbike accident with an 82 yr old driving an SUV , he ploughed straight into their bike as he turned at a junction and didn’t stop. Yes great they are easier for people to get into but had he been in a smaller car he wouldn’t have caused them the injuries he has . My Dad has had to have mind blowing surgery to save his leg as his leg isn’t attached to his foot .
Had a child been crossing the road …

Some of these cars are like the size of a small tank .

Lemsipper · 15/02/2025 14:35

Thats why I normally just park in the adult & child bays! (Despite no child) its not easy parking this beast 😜

Me to. My SUV is my child so I’m following the rules.

Yes, agree with this. We have a range rover sport (for reasons I shouldn't have to divilge, because its our choice) and we are most definetly not 'chavs', thank you!

BreezyScroller · 15/02/2025 15:18

If you have time and of course just about enough space, park next to them anyway. I've done that a few times, parking in MY spot, completely blocking them in.

People who buy them because they NEED them tend to know how to park funnily enough.

bunnibee · 15/02/2025 15:20

Ahh, yes the line straddlers - don't you have any awareness of how stupid and ignorant you look? Stupid because you obviously don't have the ability to park, ignorant because, well basically, you just are..

They're too big for single spaces a lot of the time.

They're too big full stop.

Fucking ridiculous for city dwellers to have these wanky child killing machines.

If you have one, I judge you.

I agree city dwellers and even town dwellers don’t need them. But sometimes us farmers have to go into the city. You can usual spot us though, truck or suv will be covered in mud.

Yep done that. If a car parks over the line. I park right next to it with my passenger side right next to their drivers side.
However, round here you get a ticket for parking a few millimetres over the line.
I once went to a pub for lunch. The car park was nearly taken up with cars of a certain kind parked 2 in every 3 spaces. I squeezed in and the owner came out. I told him he could get one of his slimmer friends to get over from the passenger side.

Pumpkinforever · 15/02/2025 15:26

If your car is so big that it takes more than one parking space or makes the space next to it unusable then you should pay double the parking fee.

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 15/02/2025 15:27

Not all SUV’s are huge. Mine is fully electric and the same size as a normal saloon car, but higher off the ground, which makes it easier to get in and out. I never use a multi storey car park, but it fits fine in a normal bay, and in my garage.

Chipsahoy · 15/02/2025 15:27

Trainstrike · 15/02/2025 15:00

Yep I don't understand people buying SUVs because they "need a big boot", they've got shit bootspace. We will continue to buy used MPVs and Estates for as long as we can.

Honda crv has an amazing boot space. I think it’s more of a compact suv because it’s no wider or longer than my Mazda 3. But it’s taller and I like it to see over the hedges on the single track roads. The 4x4 is helpful in allowing us to get out of our home and to town too. We get a lot of snow. Rural north Scotland here. Our track is 1/4 mile long and all uphill and exposed. The crv does as well as the big truck. I’m quite impressed.

OverTheTopOfTheMountain · 15/02/2025 15:28

StrawberrySquash · 15/02/2025 14:47

And if you are designing a carpark or setting standards for them, please allow enough space. Cars are bigger these days. A lot of the reason behind that is improved safely; crumple zones take up space, and if you have three children you can't just line them up on the back seat.

So please design for the actual world. Similarly, add in some extra loos for the women if that's what you are planning.

Yours, a childless non-car owner.

Most car parks were designed many years ago before said big cars became ‘the norm’.

Ofc they could remark all spaces to make spaces bigger. Except prices to go up accordingly because they’re not going to lose money because some townies think they need a big 4x4

MumblesParty · 15/02/2025 15:29

Whenever I see a Chelsea tractor parked over a line I take great pleasure in parking really really close to them, so they can’t get in, and have to climb over the passenger seat. I don’t care if they open their door into my car, because I drive an old banger, and their car costs more than a house, so they won’t want to risk chipping the paint. I was once sitting in the car waiting for DS, when the owner of the adjacent big SUV returned. He at least had the humility to just climb over the passenger seat, rather than ask me to move. I would have refused anyway.
