... to ask you to practise parking it in a single space? Saturday afternoon in the town multistorey and the number of huge cars parked half in a second space is 🤯

Not at all smug. Just a very sensible attitude and approach to driving a large car like a RR, surely? Why wouldn't you learn how to properly drive it?

And I don't see the point in owning one if it'd going to cause you stress because you're worried about it getting scratched, or some twat keying it? If you cannot really afford to maintain it or repair it, don't buy one.

I don't see it as a status symbol, for me that would be something like a vintage Aston Martin

The gift that keeps giving 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Actually the doors were big on my 3 door. But I found the turning circle to be really good, if you had it in City mode.

Mines an Abarth so no city mode, just fast or faster 🤣🤣

Well all I can say I would not drive in central London if I could help it... Traffic... narrow streets... no parking...congestion charge and other stuff like that...people damaging your car if parked in the street...

Basically, a massive ball ache with little positives. White vans have to do it, they are tradesmen. They have vans full of paint, garden stuff, etc.

Architect here, we also develope.
None of my white van men/ women ever arrive with a full van of stuff as I supply all materials and most of their equipment too.( lots of clients supply materials ) I really don’t know why they need their vans, they could easily jump on the tube, train or bus

Tbh unless you have your van stacked to the top there’s no need for them. Haven’t you ever noticed how everything (if anything) is low level, the spaces are never filled. Well not in my too long experience.

The only tradespeople I know that need their space are gardeners and tree cutters ( ? ). They have quite big machines in the back of their vans!

So you see.

agreed, the plebs really should take public transport not drive. Or perhaps make sure they have a car as well as a van, to use. Perhaps a Range Rover or Aston Martin?
It really is a mystery why trades people use vans as transport… bewildering…

Believe it or not, also an architect and someone who is often on site. Never question tradespeople using vans, it would simply be massively unreasonable as I actually know how builders operate - they prefer using their own tools, and their vans are basically their offices full paperwork, drawings, and everything they might need during the day. Some builders do travel by tube, you can see them in their caulk covered jeans with hard hats in hand. But most simply can't carry it all in a backpack.

You can't compare it with a mum driving her darlings to a private school though Oxford Street in a massive G-wagon, being annoyed there are people she has to watch out for.

They are on the take off, sustaining the speed can be an issue but I try my best 🤣 I call it the pocket rocket and I love it, had it 6 years, which for me is quite a long time, purely because I can't find a car I like as much.

They sound like a lot of fun. Many years ago I had a Suzuki Cappuccino which used to go like the wind. I loved that little car.

What does this even mean??

Also to the poster you've quoted, 500's are not fucking tiny 🤣 Are you sure you owned one?

The common denominator in Fiat 500s and RRs is that they are fur coat no knickers cars for people who only care about their image, if you want me to be brutally honest.

Coatsoff42 · 15/02/2025 22:25

I worked in a hospital looking after people in various accidents, including hit by cars. There were much fewer pedestrians and cyclists we treated after being hit by 4x4s, it was generally accepted that they all died usually, but people hit by lower profile cars were more likely to live. I think something to do with the torso and abdomen being hit at velocity and rupturing the aorta rather than the legs which is less fatal.
they are selfish cars for selfish people

I assume it’s the same if pedestrians or cyclists are hit by a bus? Are the people that use those selfish too?

AnxiouslyAwaitingSpring · 15/02/2025 22:35

LillyPJ · 15/02/2025 14:55

I think it's a shame people buy them in the first place. I suspect it's just because they like to look down on other people.

90% of all Motability vehicles on the road are SUVs simply because they're easy to get into when you're disabled, they don't require bending.

AnxiouslyAwaitingSpring · 15/02/2025 22:38

@bravefox It's not always a choice! Many, many disabled people have them as they don't require bending to get into and a lot of equipment hoists etc are designed for cars that are higher up. I had no choice with mine. None at all.

I wasn’t comparing.
I was noting why some people can or can’t leave their cars outside town and take public transport in.
Some can, some can’t …. I was using vans as an example because they are often not filled up with stuff and yet many still drive into town. The roads are full of them going in and out of London for example.

Of note and as an aside
White van men use the drawings on site. On , at least, large building projects they aren’t carrying them around in the back of their vans and if they are ( as a personal copy ) then they’ll be reduced in size or on iPads etc. they really aren’t taking up that much space.
( The use of paper drawings these days is rare in case they don’t update and end up using out of date ones so we’d never allow it anyway ) but that’s a derail.

PS
I wasn’t personally discussing town dwellers using 4x4s or any cars for that matter,

Spacehoppersrule · 15/02/2025 22:33

What do you think? I think not. Buses go pretty slowly, the drivers are well trained, etc.

it’s hard to think of a good environmentally friendly mass transport option better than a bus, but it’s easy to think of a better car than a 4x4. I know tonnes of people with them for no particular reason, they just want one. I think they’re all selfish and keep my mouth shut about it. It’s their choice to buy them, I think less of them.

hattie43 · 15/02/2025 22:44

Spacehoppersrule · 15/02/2025 14:46

I never, ever park in a multi storey because the spaces are always too small. And it’s often too tight going up and around the stupid ramp things. Wish they’d build them bigger.

This . Even Waitrose has ridiculously small spaces and they should bf used to us .

LillyPJ · 15/02/2025 14:55

Literally . They are higher / taller than other cars .

hattie43 · 15/02/2025 22:47

Mingenious · 15/02/2025 14:58

I think people who spend 40-60k on a car genuinely believe they have the right to inconvenience other people so it doesn’t get damaged.

I drive a fucking builders van and manage to park it quite sensibly.

40-60k does not buy you a newish RR.
