FFS Mumsnet HQ - illegal images on threads

Beware, the thread “weird message from friend” has some child abuse images on it!!! @mumsnet

OP posts:
DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 15/02/2025 11:53

I know it doesn't solve the issue at source, but I really don't get the reasoning why people in different time zones working during the UK night-time have to be unpaid volunteers.

Presumably most people who work in Australia and NZ are legally, contractually and gainfully employed in whatever jobs they do? Why does it make a difference whether their employer is based in their own or a different country?

Garlicworth · 15/02/2025 11:56

Natsku · 15/02/2025 11:10

BB code embeds images in the post, so they put the link to an image uploaded elsewhere within the BB code and it shows on the image on the post.

Not exactly the point of the thread but BB code doesn't work on Mumsnet.

@DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe

You're going to have to show me where I said all that. If not, stop making shit up and "literally strongly hinting" that I'm a pervert because I said I don't want a man to have an opinion on women posting their genitals! These replies are bonkers!

Who else posts pics of genitals on this site besides women (apart from the male trolls and CSA that posters/women report and mumsnet deletes)? 🙄

Edited

Read what I wrote again. I never said or suggested that YOU were a pervert; merely said that you were strongly hinting that Simon was a pervert, for wanting measures that clearly guard against perverted abuses.

I know you didn't use the actual word 'pervert', but you clearly used accusatory language. Why is Simon 'constantly roaming around' on MN, any more than all of the regular female users who engage respectfully in using the site as intended?

JoannaGroats · 15/02/2025 12:01

BreadInCaptivity · 15/02/2025 02:18

It's already been reported and the threads/posts were being zapped within minutes of me reporting.

Whoopee 🙄

I think it would be a great shame if there wasn't a safe way for us to continue posting images and links - they contribute massively to the enjoyment and usefulness of the site.

We could also say that banning people from writing any words on here would guard against anybody sharing graphic descriptions of anything illegal or disgusting - but it would kind of make it all a bit pointless.

HonestlyJustNo · 15/02/2025 12:05

@DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe Then you should read my posts again and stop accusing me of "strongly hinting" that Simon is a pervert because I didn't and do not think that. I take exception to you making that up because of what you read into my post and then "strongly hinting" that I'm may be the one with the unsavoury views with this line: "You berated him for that opinion and tried to make out that he was the one with the unsavoury views for that?!"

If you don't think you said that, then why accuse me of something I didn't say?

As for you policing my tone and language, I made my posts clear and reading what you want is your problem, not mine.

It must have worked at the point it happened as mumsnet said that's how it was done.

I don't want to derail this thread or to continue arguing the toss forever, but your language was clearly accusatory - whether you intended it to come across that way or not.

Being a man constantly roaming around a predominantly women's site...making me feel uncomfortable

How would you feel if your DH or DB were, say, a postman and somebody complained about him 'constantly roaming around' near people's homes? Or 'constantly roaming around' Tesco, regularly buying the same kind of food as everybody else is?

HonestlyJustNo · 15/02/2025 12:20

It's interesting how it's okay for posters to "berate" a woman for berating telling a man that she's uncomfortable with him talking about women not posting their genitals on a predominantly female site (keywords. Not Tesco or random homes🙄), and asking him to leave it to women to opine on. Too familiar, is what it is.

Posters should please stop @ ing me with their apologist bs. I've said what I needed to say. Thanks.

dffdfs · 15/02/2025 12:20

About two years ago I was on a website and suddenly people started posting child abuse images, I called the police, Police said they would look into it, I then spoke to someone that still went on the site about 8 months ago and he said they were still posting it there so I called the police back. A full two years on and the site is still there, they are still posting it only now they are selling it too.. Do I even bother contacting the police again? are they even doing anything? all the police said to me was 'stay away from the site, we can trace ip addresses so will know if you go back on' so going off that do I now have to stay away from mumsnet too just in case someone decides to post sick shit?

I'm absolutely not looking to police your tone, language or use of the site - but that appears to be what you were doing to Simon.

It's a discussion forum - not just a place for plopping - you can say pretty much what you like, but you must expect that people will respond to what you write, and may take issue with it.

HonestlyJustNo · 15/02/2025 12:37

You're right, you're derailing the thread. I won't apologise for telling a man that a woman is uncomfortable with him talking about women not posting their genitals on a predominantly female site and asking him to leave it to women to opine on, if that's what you're after.

Moving on...

Users have every right to expect that every effort is being made to make their use of a site /app as safe as possible. Clearly this isn't the case here with mn. They are trying to do it on the cheap and Hope who ever is doing this won't Try other avenues to upload this images. Mn need to start taking it seriously

That’s a very different thing to thinking of mumsnet as a safe space. Anyone who thinks anywhere on the internet is a safe space is naive and potentially vulnerable.

You don't even know who is or isn't a woman on here though, how would you even know if you were "opining with women?!"
It's a site for parents, and there are both men and women on here.

spritsailking · 15/02/2025 13:05

Maybe HQ could check everyones ID so that if anyone does CSA they know who they are?

myplace · 15/02/2025 13:09

At one time I’d have happily given MN my identity, as a safety measure to make sure nothing illegal was posted here.

That was before the TRA nonsense. Knowing that the site is actively under attack and has in the past had an intern/staff member leaking information to TRAs and suffered a data breach- it makes being anonymous more important.

That said, it could be a two tier system. We could have a verified identity account which allows us to post photos etc, and also an unverifiable account with limited access for more controversial stuff.

So we could post on style and beauty with a verified account and on FWR or the sex boards with an anonymous one 🤣 .

MakeYourOwnMusicStartYourOwnDance · 15/02/2025 10:38

I was just thinking the same.

Because the time zones are different. That was their reason/excuse for not paying them last time this happened.

Interns were leaking peoples information?!

Yes, you can read all about it here.

How do you know who's posting with good intent and who isn't, though?! Regardless of which board you're posting on.
That sounds like a system set up to fail, whether you're joking or not.

I just meant only people who identified themselves could post pictures. Simply because we’d be accountable for illegal material which isn’t the case now.
We can all be anonymous and lose the ability for pictures and links, or we can be identified if we want to post pics and links.

I think it's somewhat naive to think that people who are going to try to bring down a business by posting images of children and babies being sexually abused and raped are going to be thwarted by having to verify their identity to post.

Who is doing this? MRA’s? TRA’s? Fathers for Justice?
They all want Mumsnet closed down.

Aren't they all one and the same?
