Except we’re still seeing the issue of people not knowing about The Night Watch.

Night watch seems pointless. I've reported stuff around midnight the usual way before (not these images as thankfully didn't see them) as I didn't know there was a "special way" of reporting during the night (having to alert the unpaid volunteers via a Nightwatch board on here)
as the actual moderators don't seem to be around as things have stayed up until morning.
Crap system, they need proper round the clock moderators.

ValerieValentine · 15/02/2025 10:33

ThejoyofNC · 15/02/2025 06:42

I've been on here years and had no idea that there was a night watch.

And I wouldn't use them on the basis that I think that it's a joke to leave it to volunteers.

I lived abroad for five years, 2011-2016, in a place nine hours ahead of GMT. I used MN a lot in those days. I offered my services to MN in the form of being a ‘Night Watcher,’ but they turned me down and said they had enough people. Crazy really, over a decade later and they still need all the help they can get…

LindorDoubleChoc · 15/02/2025 10:34

Sorry, I don't understand the tech. Are we saying that people who saw the images last night (as opposed to last week) clicked on a link within the text of a post?

MakeYourOwnMusicStartYourOwnDance · 15/02/2025 10:38

mentalblank · 15/02/2025 08:38

If MN can afford to pay people to moderate the site during the day, why can't they afford to pay them during the night? Especially as moderators can work in any time zone!

I was just thinking the same.

SlightlyJaded · 15/02/2025 10:39

I agree that MN cannot rely on AI to filter images. They should do similar to the 'sex topic' thing whereby you have to have been registered for a period of time and clicked to verify your email etc before you can upload images.

Yesiknowdear · 15/02/2025 10:40

Those of you blindly defending your precious MNHQ need to consider if it’s worth risking CSA images appearing on your devices.
Been here since 2011, gave it another chance since the last incident but I don’t want CSA on my phone - that’s horrific.

I feel this way, I struggle with insomnia and I'm often on here over night. I do not want to accidentally see that stuff. I have been cautious since the first time it was posted on here not least because I know that it would be disastrous to my mental health- I was CSAd as a child and I still struggle to deal with it.
I think I'll be leaving this site after this post as it feels too risky.
For such a large website for this to happen repeatedly is a bit of a shock.

I think, though I may be wrong, it's the picture that appears with the link that you see without clicking on the link, sometimes when people post links to for example shoes there is a picture of the shoes there that you see that just sit on the thread. Hopefully I will be corrected if I'm wrong

ilovesooty · 15/02/2025 10:41

Never2many · 15/02/2025 10:30

MN is an anonymous site. It wouldn’t be reasonable to expect people to give MN HQ their ID in order to be able to upload images of the cat.

Also it’s not reasonable to expect anyone to be exposed to CSA images, even for the purpose of moderation. People who have to view those kinds of images as part of their job are given special training and access to support to help them deal with what they have to see.

Viewing CSA images shouldn’t ever be within the job description of a chat forum moderator and I don’t imagine MNHQ would want that

It’s very easy for posters to sit here and demand that MNHQ do things the way they feel they should be done, i.e. to have images assessed by a human first, but from MN POV the most important thing is that the images not be able to be posted there in the first place, and the easiest way to achieve that is to cease image uploads.

I certainly won't be paying for premium membership where my identity is verified if image posting is no longer available to me.

ETA it should be possible to restrict who can post images, how often and when.

No. They didn't need to click the link, the image was shown on the thread.

When a link is posted you can also include an image preview, which shows an image of the web page. For example if I posted a link to a jumper on Amazon, the image preview on the MN thread would show the jumper.

Hopefully that makes sense.

oakleaffy · 15/02/2025 10:51

Stop ALL pics of genitals. No one needs to post a picture of their genitals to ask ''Is this normal..it it Herpes?''
A sexual health clinic is the place to ask, OR a GP, not a public forum.

HonestlyJustNo · 15/02/2025 11:03

Simonjt · 15/02/2025 05:48

Also no one should be uploading photos of their genitals to a public forum, no matter how old they are, showing someone a picture of genitals without prior consent is also against the law. The fact that mumsnet doesn’t automatically ban people from exposing their genitals has always been problematic.

Being a man constantly roaming around a predominantly women's site, I don't think you should be talking about female posters' genitals anyway or even in a position to view it and have an opinion. Leave that to the women who're already making that point. It makes me quite uncomfortable to read a man posting this, regardless of intention.

ABunchOfBadBitches · 15/02/2025 11:05

Can’t say I’m surprised that this happened again. So soon too…

BB code embeds images in the post, so they put the link to an image uploaded elsewhere within the BB code and it shows on the image on the post.

This poster is literally agreeing with you though?!
Men are allowed on here, it's a parenting site.
He isn't "constantly roaming" around either, you're trying to make it sound dodgy when he's just a regular, reasonable poster.

That is so uncalled for.
Simonjt is honest about who he is and I for one enjoy his posts.
As far as I'm concerned he is most welcome here.

It’s not about you though is it

HonestlyJustNo · 15/02/2025 11:19

Never said he's not welcome here. Never said he shouldn't post here. Never said men are not allowed here. I said he shouldn't be posting about women's genitals. I haven't disagreed with any other thing he's posted here, just that.

I don't care how anyone feels about me opposing him making that post since you don't care how uncomfortable it makes me (a woman) to see a man talking about women's genitals, regardless of his good intentions as I said. Several other women have made that point already, we don't need a man to tell us anything about posting women's genitals - good or bad unless he's a doctor. I don't care who he is to you, it's still a predominantly female site the last time I checked.

ididnot · 15/02/2025 11:24

I was and am more uncomfortable with the fact that anyone who doesn’t agree with Simon apparently wants child sexual abuse images distributed Hmm

I am all for robust disagreement but I don’t want to read anything further from that poster as it happens, no matter how ‘reasonable’ they may be. You showed your true colours there Simon and they aren’t flattering.

HonestlyJustNo · 15/02/2025 11:27

@ididnot Wow! I actually didn't see those posts, they were already deleted when I was scrolling so I don't know what he said. That sounds horrible too!

myplace · 15/02/2025 11:41

Personally I avoid buying into the dissent that the bad actor is trying to cause.

I think MN’s tech support missed something that they should have foreseen, and wonder whether they were asked for something too specific- ‘is there a way of screening photos’ rather than ‘how do we make sure bad actors can’t x,y,z’.

I would hope MN are now staffed overnight- the fast response last night suggests they are.

I don’t expect MN to spell out all the steps they take, for obvious reasons, and we’ll only ever know about the ones that failed.

I don’t think online is a safe place, nowhere is. There are risks. Remember when air drop started and flashers started dropping dick pics on unsuspecting women?

isthismylifenow · 15/02/2025 11:45

For all those saying it's the MRA's attempt to take down the site .... stay and don't let them win.

Why? Why should I subject myself to images I didn't chose to see, just to not let others win.

They seem adept at finding loopholes, as they have yet again succeeded. So, they did in fact, win.

I think the idea of testing the loophole may very well come from the fact that multiple, more than normal, amount of fannies have been posted in the last few weeks. Did MNHQ honestly not have any suspicions about this.

The site used to be very different (I've been here off and on for over 20 years). It's a shame what it's become now.

Where did Simon say that only photos of women's genitals should/shouldn't be allowed?

Simon very reasonably opined that nobody should be posting photos of anybody's genitals on a general discussion forum with a huge user base. You berated him for that opinion and tried to make out that he was the one with the unsavoury views for that?!

Literally strongly hinting that somebody saying they don't want anything potentially perverted to be posted is/might be a pervert!!

BeMoreAmandaland · 15/02/2025 11:50

Feeling sick just reading it happened again. Agree mumsnet isn't doing enough and still think night moderators should be paid employees, not volunteers

For those who saw images someone last time said playing tetris helps to clear the memory from your mind.

You absolutely don’t have to. It’s entirely your choice.

You should not, however, call for it to be shut down denying other people their choice.

HonestlyJustNo · 15/02/2025 11:52

@DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe

You're going to have to show me where I said all that. If not, stop making shit up and "literally strongly hinting" that I'm a pervert because I said I don't want a man to have an opinion on women posting their genitals! These replies are bonkers!

Who else posts pics of genitals on this site besides women (apart from the male trolls and CSA that posters/women report and mumsnet deletes)? 🙄
