Beware, the thread “weird message from friend” has some child abuse images on it!!! @mumsnet

OP posts:
DinoLil · 15/02/2025 07:39

Not again???!

Come on, MNHQ, get this sorted!

cerisierblossom · 15/02/2025 07:31

Image sharing needs to be turned off and new registrations need to be disabled.

It's clear there's no control over the site and until such time as they can make sure this never happens again, they need to stop it from being a possibility

Agree. If whatever tech MN go with successfully detects CSA I wouldn't be surprised if whoever is doing this moves on to other images, animal cruelty for eg. They need to remove the option for any images to be added for the foreseeable, and the Night Watch needs to be prominately pinned so users know where to go. I've been on MN, on & off, 15 odd years, i didn't know it existed.

Dogsbreath7 · 15/02/2025 07:49

I didn’t see thread or images or anything previously. I am trusting MN are working to resolve this problem permanently.

But please someone tell me / assure me the police are informed and the paedophile is being tracked down? Because this is ILLEGAL.

dont let another man disrupt/ invade this women’s virtual space- happening enough in the real world. MNs don’t give up.

cerisierblossom · 15/02/2025 07:53

@Sinkintotheswamp clearly the software has failed, again.

I'm minded to report to OFCOM now. I don't see how else this can be resolved, other than getting the proper authorities involved

EasternStandard · 15/02/2025 07:57

Thankfully I missed it again. I don’t think anyone should see CSA even moderators. Easier to shut off image sharing, at night in particular but in the day too if that’s not enough

ScottBakula · 15/02/2025 08:02

I agree with pp and said it on a previous thread, posting any photos overnight should be disabled permanently.

Also
Everyone can only post 1 image per day , this should be linked to your account not your username.

In addition I think,
New members should not be able to post any photos for 3 / 4 weeks.
Not able to name change for 2 weeks

I don't know how/ if it could be set up but also something like a verification code to be text or emailed to you before your photo can be uploaded.
Similar to the way banks / pay pal ect text to make sure its you.
Though I appreciate this will be a huge amount of extra work and therfore cost to mnhq.

Out of curiosity how many of you would be willing to pay a members fee per month if it would definitely stop them kind of imagines?
This would be used for paying for ; Better software,
More staff to check uploaded images,
NW team been paid,
Frequent training,

and if we are really going to push the boat out any legal fees incurred or needed to help prosecution of the scum that post them. ( though you would hope that would be taken on by the Crown )

If you would be willing to pay a fee how much would be a reasonable amount?

If you are not willing, why not ?

I know the COL is hitting everyone but personally I think a few pounds a month would be worth it.

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 15/02/2025 08:02

I agree @Dogsbreath7 but the number of thread posts by men 'giving the man's view' (gee, thanks) or worse when men post trying to give impression it's a woman shows MN already being disrupted from the group it used to be.

What's happening now with these sick images is a new low though and I don't know what the answer is if image upload cant be seriously controlled but will ultimately lead to a loss of genuine supportive posters.

I'm not willing to pay because this is supposed to be a free to use site.

I shouldn't have to pay to protect my personal safety from seeing those sorts of images. MM makes enough money to moderate.

EasterIssland · 15/02/2025 08:05

I posted an image yesterday in a thread which didn’t show for a while and it said “we are verifying your image doesn’t break the rules” or something like that. From what I understood from Justine this software was going to prevent uploading csa images , so how has it escaped to them ? It’d clear they’ve not implemented the right solution

madamweb · 15/02/2025 08:05

coxesorangepippin · 15/02/2025 02:38

Tbh it's really putting me off MN and I've been on here years

I almost clicked in the thread in question too, I'm so glad I didn't

Thats what they are aiming to achieve though. But I understand not wishing to stumble across something like that

I thought Mumsnet had stopped people being able to post images?

It’s allowed but the image gets verified and then posted

NeelyOHara · 15/02/2025 08:08

There should be a waiting period before you can post on Mumsnet, plus no name changing.

spritsailking · 15/02/2025 08:10

I think it's best to disable images all together. MNHQ spent days fixing it and it failed badly

madamweb · 15/02/2025 08:11

I think either ban images or only allow them for premium members. That way the poster can be traced to the bank account ?

CerealPosterHere · 15/02/2025 08:12

I certainly wouldn’t want to pay a monthly membership for MN to improve their software/training, etc. they’re a massive company making a significant profit I’d imagine. They need to use some of their income to sort this out! We as users are making their business possible/ie they’re already making money out of us.

Yes, only allowing for premium members sounds a good idea, I'm not one, also it would be a perk that people usually expect if you are paying for something

Dolphinnoises · 15/02/2025 08:15

hehehesorry · 15/02/2025 04:58

Didn't see it, but I'm on another women's site with strong anti trans views that was spammed with CSA for a long time.

I did wonder if it was the TRAs and then second-guessed myself so that’s interesting to know…

BobnLen · 15/02/2025 08:15

I wouldn't pay anyway for premium but I have never added a photo anyway to MN

LizzieBananas · 15/02/2025 08:15

I’ve been here since 2010. I’m horrified that they are still using the night watch AND that they are volunteers.

Twice is a pattern and a solution is needed.

I'm not one either but I think I am happy for rules like that if they reduce the risk of being exposed to awful images

That sounds like a good solution. It might also make moderating and reviewing photos more manageable.

MN have a legal resposibility to protect users from harm, there shouldn’t be any case where a user is only protected from harm if they pay a fee.

MintSass · 15/02/2025 08:20

Again?!

They should have continued disallowing uploads until the software had been tried for tested for a number of weeks, and new registrations should’ve been locked from then also.
The “solution” they’ve put in place clearly isn’t working. Hugely disappointing as you’d expect a very profitable website to have a more robust system in place.
Also, the Night Watch only being able to ‘hide’ threads is ridiculous.

Badgerandfox227 · 15/02/2025 08:21

Mumsnet please permanently disable images on threads. I don’t think we need them. Yes the odd car parking pic is very useful, maybe images have to be moderated before they can go live? Or only if you have an account where you’ve verified your ID first.

EasterIssland · 15/02/2025 08:21

Not only that mn makes mostly money from advertisements not from premium accounts. If they carry on with this issue they’ll likely loose their main income as a company I’d not want my name being related with csa
