Beware, the thread “weird message from friend” has some child abuse images on it!!! @mumsnet

OP posts:

I saw the photos last night when I was scrolling and could not sleep. Then I really couldn’t sleep. It was such a shock. I couldn’t quite believe what I was seeing.
In many, many years of far too much internet use I have never accidentally come across such images before. Am actually really quite upset.

I am so sorry that you saw that and hope you are OK. Please talk to someone about it. Call Samaritans (which exists for people who need to get something off their chest).

I would hate to have seen those images. I often look at MN at night and am very grateful that I was too tired to do so last night.

Thank you for the reports and we are very sorry for those who’ve been affected. Our AI-based filtering system is designed to detect and hide inappropriate images but the attacker posted a link to site which contained such images. We are disabling the feature which shows image previews and have also disabled new registrations and images for now. We'll post more information as soon as there is anything else to say.

I'm im understanding it right your fix to prevent this happening was to scan photos. But this could be got round by using html for an image elsewhere? I can't see how this loophole would be missed!

Im so sorry you went through this. From the sounds of it a lot of people were affected again by the CSA images here

Posting photos - any photos - needs to be disabled until whoever is uploading CSA images has been dealt with by the appropriate authorities. Mumsnet is no longer a safe space for women.

I agree.

Lyannaa · 15/02/2025 09:02

I'm so relieved that I didn't see any of them.

TaylorSwish · 15/02/2025 09:03

FFS again!

I can’t believe they let this happen again!

With all due respect, @kittensinthekitchen, I don’t think that @BiologicalRobot was talking to OP as though they are stupid. She clearly wrote something in a straightforward manner and it seems as though you are misreading things. MNHQ are doing their best and just because people aren’t aware, doesn’t mean a board is hidden.

Edited

What makes you think mnhq are doing their best? Their moderation absolutely sucks. Unpaid volunteers overnight on a site raking in millions every year? You don't need to suck up to them. They're not your friends. They're a business and at the moment they're exposing their users to harm.

Sadcafe · 15/02/2025 09:04

It’s beyond disgusting posting this type of thing, but sadly not confined to mumsnet, frequent posts now on Facebook that turn to porn if you open them, thankfully it’s not of the child variety

Hairyesterdaygonetoday · 15/02/2025 09:04

villainandvixen · 15/02/2025 02:38

Thank you for the warning. I’m off mumsnet. They should have disabled photos after the last time

I’m sure Mumsnet is dealing with this as quickly as possible. Far from putting me off Mumsnet, this assault on a women’s service makes me more determined to keep using it.

I agree Mumsnet needs a paid workforce to police attacks at night. And we may have to do without images for a while.

Misogynists are always going to attack women’s services and facilities. We don’t give in to them.

You will probably never forget it. I once walked into my own living room where I had left the tv on and Oprah was on talking about CSA and it haunts me almost twenty years later. It changed my perception of the world. We all know it exists but it's so confronting.

Quickly?! There have been mechanisms to deal with illegal images and filtering images for years. This is about 10 + years behind the rest of the world due to laziness and greed from @MNHQ.

Sorry 'for' and not sorry 'to'? The lawyers have been all over that one haven't they? Can't possibly apologise for the site's second failure to protect its users because it's starting to look a lot like negligence now, isn't it?

Lyannaa · 15/02/2025 09:16

It has been perfectly obvious for a long time that there was no moderation of MN overnight because blatant troll posts are never deleted until 8am the next morning.

I think this is the right thing. What I don’t get is the automatic assumption by mumsnet users that this is all mumsnet’s responsibility to protect users from seeing said images, rather than the criminal justice system’s responsibility to find, arrest and prosecute the people creating and sharing these images in the first place.

It’s an internet forum, of course it’s not a safe space for women. It’s frightening that you actually think anywhere online is a safe space.

ZookeeperSE · 15/02/2025 09:25

I can’t imagine that whoever is doing this is doing so without the protection of a VPN.
Therefore, MN need to block users from accessing their content with a VPN/proxy in addition to any other measure regarding images.

I'm so sorry you saw those. Same for me that in many many years of internet use, many forums, including moderating a forum that attracted trolls constantly, I never saw anything as bad as CSA, the worst I ever saw was goatse. Which makes me think this is a targeted attempt to shut mumsnet down, either by making it legally harder and harder for them to operate, or by driving the users away. Its just not normal to post these sort of images, its not what a troll does - its an attack by people that hate mumsnet.

notatinydancer · 15/02/2025 09:28

coxesorangepippin · 15/02/2025 02:37

I thought photos had been banned??? Since the recent issue??

Not banned , but I thought they had to have pending approval.

notatinydancer · 15/02/2025 09:28

I saw the last lot. Horrendous.

Sushu · 15/02/2025 09:32

Those of you blindly defending your precious MNHQ need to consider if it’s worth risking CSA images appearing on your devices.
Been here since 2011, gave it another chance since the last incident but I don’t want CSA on my phone - that’s horrific.

It’s exactly the sort of thing that 4-chan, 8-chan trolls do.
Of course they would also want to close Mumsnet down.

pippapipps · 15/02/2025 09:35

Absolute vile specimens that post this hope they rot.. I clicked on a post a few weeks back in the middle of the night and thank god it wasn't what some of you saw last night but it still made me physically sick to see a photo of a dirty vile man naked with his hand on his tiny penis 🤢 absolutely sickening

You do realise both can be true?

It's a multimillion pound profit making enterprise. Of course they have a duty of care to their users. It should never have happened, but maybe the first time can maybe be excused. The second time? Outright negligence.

Online Safety Act means MN is responsible for welfare of posters, and has a duty to protect you from harm, one of the duties is to prevent users being exposed to illegal content. Where this sort of thing is concerned MN have a responsibility to make sure such things are never visible to posters. The person who posted them being appropriately dealt with is seperate to the legal responsibilites MN agrees to by choosing to operate.
