To be annoyed when people say ....

low key ? For example someone says " does this top not low key go with these jeans" it seems to be used all the time now. Maybe annoyed is not the right word but it's irritating 🤣 . Light-hearted post really. Are there any sayings that seem to be "trending" that annoys you ?

Gaaaaah!

My DD says this ALL THE TIME! It drives me nuts!
Low key this and low key that......

It'll be replaced with something equally annoying soon enough I guess!😂

So does mine.

Did you have a good day? Low key.
Your hair's looking shiny. Low key
Low key I've applied for a job.

It doesn't make any sense.

tobee · 12/02/2025 16:53

Girasole02 · 12/02/2025 16:03

'If that makes sense' at the end of a sentence.

I do say that quite often. Because most of the things I say don't make sense. 😬

WhatterySquash · 12/02/2025 16:54

OMG yes "we're just going Sainsbury's" arrrgh!

CheekyHobson · 12/02/2025 16:55

I think the person quoted in the OP used “low key” in a slightly unusual way which is why it grated, but I (late 40s) rather like “low-key” as a phrase (along with a lot of other words and phrases quoted in the thread).

”Low key” is used quite flexibly by Gen Z, but generally it’s a substitute for “a little bit” (I was low-key annoyed by that), “secretly” (I low-key love Bluey even though it’s for kids) or “but I’m playing it cool” (I am low-key obsessed with the guy who works at the corner shop).

I think the person in the OP probably meant something like “Does this too not look amazing with these jeans?” with the “not” being ironically or as a way of saying “don’t you agree” but it’s a complicated structure!

tobee · 12/02/2025 16:55

Yes @JudgeJ

ElleneAsanto · 12/02/2025 17:01

I’ll gently draw your attention to Pedants’ Corner if this sort of thing grinds your gears… 😉

I often wonder how we described points of view before everything became a bloody “narrative”.

Babycote · 12/02/2025 17:01

Oh I've got one : ur for your

I always read it as 'err' in my head and it makes no sense

The incorrect use of the word proper, for example "That was proper nice that pizza"

Also "you'll smash it babes" meaning someone will do a good job of something. Can we just do a good job and not "smash" things...?

XWKD · 12/02/2025 17:05

Putting "literally" and "actively" ought to be a hanging offence.

Garlicworth · 12/02/2025 17:10

I hate that no-one says 'hatred' any more. After checking just now, 'hate' does have a long history as a noun. I reserve the right to be annoyed by its recent resurgence, though.

So I literally just thought I'd low-key share that with y'all 😂

ErrolTheDragon · 12/02/2025 17:10

So the youngsters are using 'low-key' instead of something like 'kinda' ?

The phrase that often annoys me is the host of radio 4 comedies reading the credits, ending with 'and I've been Andy Zaltzman' or whoever... unless they cease to exist when they're off air, wtf don't they say 'and I'm ....'?Confused

lifeonmars100 · 12/02/2025 17:14

Not heard it yet, going to keep an ear open for it. The over use and usually inaccurate use of "aesthetic" makes me grind my teeth. Seems to be a favourite with shrieking nail tapping influencers who use it all the time while going on about their latest "hauls" . In fact haul is another word that riles me up too. The greed, the tat and the future landfill are jaw dropping

Rosscameasdoody · 12/02/2025 17:14

Not sure if it’s exactly trending but ‘going forward’ drives me up the wall !! And don’t get me started on the word ‘like’ !!

I have heard this alot. Not recently though, and I agree it's annoying. Why are you always turning around when speaking 🤣

Edited

A lot. Not alot. Alot is not a word.

Allot is a word, like "my allotted portion" or "The court decided to allot the plaintiff 15 shares in the company". A Lot, meaning loads, is two words. Alot is just incorrect.

Sorry, OP - Alot is one of my bugbears of online communication, like "low key" is yours.

And yes, I noticed 19yo and her friends saying "that scarf will low key go with the jacket" and it surprised me as well. Bloody youngsters, making language their own.

I threatened to say Skibibi at them if they didn't stop saying Hence Why. That was a dire enough threat. 😁

Orphlids · 12/02/2025 17:17

When people have a disagreement online, they often try to insult the other person with “I bet you’re fun at parties!” or sign off with “I hope you have the day you deserve.” I always feel slightly embarrassed for them, because I have this little image of them having previously read that in an exchange between others, and making a note of it. I can just imagine them feverishly jotting it down, excitedly looking forward to their next Facebook spat and an opportunity to use their stock phrases.

Oh God yes, it’s always ‘it doesn’t fit the narrative’ !!

Georgyporky · 12/02/2025 17:20

My SIL often said "to tell you the truth".
I butted in & said "Why, do you usually lie to me ?"
It worked !

Sorry OP but ‘Alot’ is also one of the things that annoys me. A lot is two words - ether that or ‘allot’ with two L’s but with a different meaning.

I'm terrible for being annoyed by words and phrases so I have a long list, but I haven't heard :"low key" used in this way - if I do it WILL annoy me though! Grin

Agree abut "welcoming" a baby and also I've been irritated by the use of "shared" being everywhere recently. "The former couple share a son, XXX aged 7" and even worse "shared a kiss" makes me want to scream.

Agree, it’s have a son /daughter well always used to be. You share a bag of crisps. You may have shared custody of a child.

I've not heard anyone say anything is low key apart from an event

lifeonmars100 · 12/02/2025 17:26

"journey" now used for any and every life experience. "passed" instead of died or passed away.

Quoting myself here...

I meant to say "Putting "literally" and "actively" in every second sentence ought to be a hanging offence."
