Weird about eggs

HarrietMartineau · 12/02/2025 11:52

I eat quiches, but I won't eat boiled, fried or poached eggs. Something yukky about egg white and yolk being separate. I eat omelettes and scrambled eggs but they have to be totally combined, cooked through and no white chunks or yellow chunks. And the chicken embryo bit completely removed. Am I weird or what?

OP posts:

Totally normal, egg whites on they’re own are vile.

Pascha · 12/02/2025 11:56

I can't stand egg whites, especially if they are a bit snotty. I only eat the runny yolk of a fried egg usually. Boiled eggs and poached are an absolute no. Omelettes are disgusting with their wobbly slimy texture.

I do like a scrambled egg with butter but it must be well cooked and not wet in the slightest.

DragonfliesAboveYourBed · 12/02/2025 11:57

I like poached and boiled, but don't like the white bit in fried eggs.

BigDahliaFan · 12/02/2025 12:03

I like really well fried eggs, almost crispy, like you get on nasi goreng or similar.

But I'll never eat the white of a standard full english breakfast egg.

Scrambled, poached, boiled, omelettes etc etc - love them.

Husband came late to liking eggs - but he won't do a boiled or fried and is funny about poached eggs....

YANBU. I like eggs and have them from time to time but there's something weird about them. I think it's the fact that it's not just hens that produce eggs, all sorts of animals (and humans) do. What grosses me out is if I get the image of eating an egg from a different animal whilst trying to eat a proper hen's egg. There was an episode of One Foot in the Grave where Victor Meldrew received some alligator (I think) eggs for a snake that had got into his house, from time to time I recall the scene where someone tried to boil and eat one, not knowing what it was, and whenever I remember it I can't eat eggs for a while. Like now I've thought of it, it'll be a few weeks before I can have them.

I'm the same with cow's milk. Usually it's fine but sometimes I think of human milk or dog's milk and it puts me off it.

Wtf is the chicken embryo bit?! What do you mean.

Talipesmum · 12/02/2025 12:05

OP you need one of these - spins the egg round and mixes the white and the yolk together in the shell like Actual Magic https://amzn.eu/d/8vxG6aj

Its a white stringy coil, thats the umbilical cord. It links the embryo to the yolk and its stuck to the the yolk capsule, it can be difficult to get it off.

Funykeudfh · 12/02/2025 12:07

Wtffff never heard of or noticed this. I dont really eat eggs anyway think they're gross.

Yes, I know just what the op means. It’s the solid stringy bits in the egg white, sometimes accompanied by the odd tiny fleck of red. I can’t bear them, so spend ages removing them from the bowl - quite tricky as it’s so slimy! It’s a bit nonsensical, really, as I sometimes eat boiled eggs and I also very much doubt that food manufacturers and restaurants etc. painstakingly remove the bits before using the eggs!

Just read in a pp that it’s the umbilical cord!

Use the shell to scoop out any gross bits. Only thing that works.

Verv · 12/02/2025 12:22

I like poached, fried, or boiled eggs, but hate things like omelette and quiche, so opposite weirdness i suppose.

Thelnebriati · 12/02/2025 12:23

If I get the umbilical cord in my mouth I gag, its the texture. A red spot on the yolk can also be coccidiosis infection: chicken coccidiosis is gross but harmless to humans.
I used to believe I wasn't fussy about food.

That’s interesting, albeit adding to my distaste! How do you know so much about eggs? 😀

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/02/2025 12:29

Maybe I'm the weird one! I love eggs in all their forms. (Posting for balance.)

Thelnebriati · 12/02/2025 12:30

Many years ago I lived on a small holding, and I used to breed and show chickens!

tilypu · 12/02/2025 12:32

I'm exactly the same as you, op, so I don't think it's weird at all 😁

Bythewayimgoingouttonight · 12/02/2025 12:35

Wtaf I have two eggs per day and have never come across this umbilical cord! Please don’t ruin my lunch, it’s the highlight of my day 😭

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 12/02/2025 12:38

I'm similar but I don't eat scrabbled eggs.

Quiche and omelette - fine.

Anything else - 🤢

Normallynumb · 12/02/2025 12:39

I can't eat any eggs which look like eggs
but can eat pancakes, cakes and some firm quiches.
It's not unusual to have a dislike for the whites or any particular different textures, or the smell.

MissUltraViolet · 12/02/2025 12:42

I like eggs but if I think about what I’m eating when I have them I can no longer eat them lol.

Same with pate!

Cant beat a crispy fried egg though.

RitaFires · 12/02/2025 12:43

It's funny how people are different, I hate the taste of yolk. I can only tolerate if it's mixed in with the white like in scrambled eggs or omelettes. I like the white on its own but I know most of the vitamins are in the yolk.

EveryKneeShallBow · 12/02/2025 12:43

See I came on to say I’m fine with eggs of all kinds (but a bit weirded out by any dish containing both chicken and eggs, for some reason!). But now I’ve read all the descriptions of the stringy bits, and embryos and whatnot, I don’t think I can eat eggs for a while.

funinthesun19 · 12/02/2025 12:49

Quiche and omelettes/scrambled I’m fine with.

I struggle with boiled, poached, fried eggs though. Especially when the yolk is runny 🤢.

Same here (except boiled, bleurgh) - poached and fried are fine, can't do scrambled, omelettes or quiches.
