Weird about eggs

HarrietMartineau · 12/02/2025 11:52

I eat quiches, but I won't eat boiled, fried or poached eggs. Something yukky about egg white and yolk being separate. I eat omelettes and scrambled eggs but they have to be totally combined, cooked through and no white chunks or yellow chunks. And the chicken embryo bit completely removed. Am I weird or what?

I'm a bit funny with eggs. I have to remove those cloudy, white bits that are on either side of the yolk before I'll cook and eat an egg. Apparently, they're called chalazae and 'anchor' the yolk in the white. They are like gristle which is why I remove them.

I have quail and don't buy any eggs in. I hatch in a semi regular basis. The ones that don't make the grade for the incubator are eaten. By us or the dogs.

I don't like quiche, can take or leave scrambled eggs but they need ketchup, anything dippy is a win, fried eggs aren't meant to be crispy!

I love scrambled eggs with ketchup. Its about the only time I have it. The eggs have to be dry though.

Yes, I can’t stand sloppy scrambled eggs, either.
One one occasion when I was about 2 or 3, I was given a very soft boiled egg for tea at a relative’s house. I apoarently took a mouthful and promptly spat it out on the floor. My family were aghast, and the incident is still occasionally referenced. It nicely illustrates how I still feel about runny eggs though!

RaininSummer · 12/02/2025 18:41

I will eat home made quiche and omelettes sometimes because I add so much veg and cheese etc that I wipe out the egg taste and a lot of the horrible wibbly texture. Basically I don't like egg unless in cake form but I know they are good for me.

Elsvieta · 12/02/2025 20:39

Embryo? Eggs from supermarkets aren't fertilized - they don't keep males anywhere near the layers.

Catterbat · 12/02/2025 21:07

Fine generally, except for any kind of crispiness on a fried egg white. Oh sweet Jesus, I can’t even think about it without gagging. If I ever go out to breakfast and someone brings me one of those I have to physically remove myself from the table while whoever I’m with discreetly gets rid of it or I feel like I’m going to pass out. Something unnaturally crunchy has no place on an egg. It’s like eating a scab 🤢

Catterbat · 12/02/2025 21:08

So no, not weird at all.

Halstonriver · 12/02/2025 21:14

Another one who can't eat eggs which look like eggs, i.e. boiled, scrambled, fried or poached, but can happily have scrambled eggs, omelettes and quiches. I don't know anyone in real life who has the same issue and am very pleased to find there are others like me out there.

BobbyBiscuits · 12/02/2025 21:17

Very normal. The texture of undercooked egg white is vile and I'm not mad about runny yolk.
I like to break the yolk when I do a fried egg.
Scrambled is much safer. As long as they don't use margarine!
I know quite a few people who are disgusted by eggs in all forms except in cakes etc.
My dad was violently allergic to eggs as a child and they forced him to eat them so his phobia might have impacted on me!
Great economical source of protein though.

TheEllisGreyMethod · 12/02/2025 21:19

Everyone has some level of weirdness around eggs. It's universally known and accepted. People who say they aren't weird about eggs, well they're also weird because they normally love eggs and eat them constantly, which is again weird.

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 12/02/2025 21:21

I cannot abide eggs.
Can't put any form of egg in my mouth without gagging.
The smell makes me retch no matter in what form they are cooked.
However, I can eat them as an ingredient for cakes etc even then of I bake fairy cakes and I eat one still warm I feel like I can taste the egg.

BeachedOff · 12/02/2025 21:34

Shout out to my eggs. I quite like them.

It really isn't universally known and accepted. Nobody in my family has any weirdness around eggs and nor are we constantly eating them.

ODFOx · 12/02/2025 21:36

One f my DD only ate the egg white and her bff only ate yolk so they would have fried age to share for breakfast after sleepovers!
Another DD eats boiled egg with buttered soldiers, and makes her own eggy bread, but doesn't like fried, poached or 'mixed up egg' in scrambled, quiche, omelette etc. That seems a mystery to me as I can't see the pattern.

notnorman · 12/02/2025 21:37

I went right off them when I owned chickens.
Unhelpful really cos they each lay one per day.🙈

WasteOfPaint · 12/02/2025 21:37

My DH is exactly the same, scrambled or omelette only.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 12/02/2025 21:38

I wish I liked eggs! I am not allergic, so am fine if egg is cooked in a recipe. But I struggle to eat eggs plain. I can cope with the egg and like runny egg yolk on a hash brown or toast dipped into a boiled egg. But if I eat scrambled or poached egg or any egg white I get a really weird feeling in my throat and feel sick later on.

Same here. I can detect egg in things like fruit curds too - I've learnt the brands that have less dominant egg.

Each to their own but I just do not understand how people can enjoy eggs. They are so slimy and slippery - it's as if they are designed to be revolting!

Lorddenning1 · 14/02/2025 20:03

I have found my people, I thought it was just me. I used to eat eggs and as long as I forgot I was eating them I would be fine, if I was half way through it and remembered I’m eating eggs then I would start to gag. At the moment I can only eat the egg whites, the Yolk bit makes me feel ill (that’s where the baby chick is) and yes I am an adult who fully understands there is no baby chick in there, but it’s just gross. I used to think it was mind over matter, until I started to eat a ready meal and after a few bites started to gag, read the packet and who knew carbonara had eggs in it, I was actually sick this time, but no idea how I had that reaction when I was unaware it contained eggs.

UpMyself · 14/02/2025 20:13

Poached egg - great if yolk is runny
Boiled egg - great if yolk runny. cold is OK
Fried egg - not for me
Scrambled egg - yummy on toast
Omelette - nice if not fried in oil
Frittata - nice if not oily
Quiche/Flan - nice but if the egg is custardy not nice at all

BigHairyLeggedSpider · 14/02/2025 20:30

There's a smell other crockery gets when washed in the same dishwasher as an egg pan. It's like stinky wet dog and both me and my daughter can detect it in tiny amounts and can no longer use that cup or bowl or whatever it is. My husband thinks we are weird.

gingergiraffe · 14/02/2025 20:56

Just to reassure those of you about the ‘umbilical cord’ thing. It’s actually an anchor, two of them to keep the yolk in the middle of the white. Nothing to do with a developing chick. In fact , even the free range eggs we buy are not fertilised eggs since the chickens are kept in an all girls environment. If you bought free range eggs from a farm where there were cockerels some may be fertilised but you would not be able to tell. An embryo only develops when a fertile egg is incubated, but since most eggs are collected daily, this would not happen.

I have found my people. I hate eggs (fried/poached/ boiled/scrambled/ and don't get me started on egg mayonnaise sandwiches 🤮.

Even the word egg makes me feel weird.

I can just about eat hot quiche if it has lots of ham and cheese.

I also don't like cows milk or ANY hot drinks. The smell of milk and tea turns my stomach.

I feel like I could have written this! I’m 100% in agreement. I don’t even particularly like having eggs or cows milk in the house as I feel queasy at the sight of them.

Its a white stringy coil, thats the umbilical cord. It links the embryo to the yolk and its stuck to the the yolk capsule, it can be difficult to get it off.

I put eggs through a tea strainer before I scramble them or make an omelette.
I like hard boiled eggs. I won't eat fried, soft boiled or poached eggs.
