Weird about eggs

HarrietMartineau · 12/02/2025 11:52

I eat quiches, but I won't eat boiled, fried or poached eggs. Something yukky about egg white and yolk being separate. I eat omelettes and scrambled eggs but they have to be totally combined, cooked through and no white chunks or yellow chunks. And the chicken embryo bit completely removed. Am I weird or what?

Its a white stringy coil, thats the umbilical cord. It links the embryo to the yolk and its stuck to the the yolk capsule, it can be difficult to get it off.

It is not the bloody umbilical cord for fucks sake, that would require the egg to be fertilised. It's called the Chalaza, most eggs have two and it's a completely harmless coil of proteins which suspend the yolk so it doesn't bump around.

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 12/02/2025 13:00

I like eggs in nearly all forms, but I can't reliably eat boiled eggs - I want to eat them, but it's like my body rejects them and won't let me swallow them. Weird.😂 Have given up bothering.

Anotherfrozenpizzafortea · 12/02/2025 13:03

JFC.

It's not umbilical cord. The chick is not born having previously been attached to its mother, or to the shell. The yolk is what it uses for nutrition during development. They are actually an indicator of REALLY fresh eggs, and keep the yolk central in the shell.

No, you are completely normal 😆

I like quiche (provided there are enough other ingredients it doesn't taste 'eggy') and can eat omelettes if they are thoroughly blended and well cooked. Can sometimes eat scrambled eggs but get easily put off them, and they MUST be completely blended and cooked til they are totally solid. Imo if egg is still moving it is NOT COOKED.
Boiler/poached/fried I can't eat. As in couldn't even force them down to be polite, everything about them makes me gag.
There are things like fish and mushrooms that I don't like but could force down if I had to to be polite. Eggs I couldn't.
It's a shame as they are an amazing food, I wish I did like them!
I am fine with the idea of them, it's the texture, smell and taste I couldn't stand. Mainly texture when I think about it. Like I cannot fathom scooping runny yolk or wobbly white into my mouth without heaving.

ItGhoul · 12/02/2025 13:04

Oh, not weird at all. Loads of people don't like eggs or only like them in certain forms.

I'm a huge egg fan myself, but I think it's honestly quite common for people not like them - or, like you, not to like them unless the yolk and white are whisked together.

tulippa · 12/02/2025 13:12

YANBU at all. I can't abide egg yolk or any hint of uncooked egg. Will tolerate very well cooked scrambled egg or omelette but wouldn't mind at all if eggs disappeared tomorrow. Even quiche is a bit too 'runny' for me.

MindenReload · 12/02/2025 13:12

Eggs IMO are the best source of vegetarian protein and fats. I love them in any form. Including mixing egg yolks with icing sugar like you would for a cake and just eat that as a dessert when it's too cold for ice cream.

canipetthatdawggg · 12/02/2025 13:18

I only really cope with them in things. About once a year I manage an omelette. This thread has not helped 🤣

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 12/02/2025 13:24

Any eggs you buy in the supermarket won't be fertilised so there won't be any 'umbilical chord' or 'embryo chick' in them! You'll only stand a chance of getting fertilised eggs if you buy from someone who keeps cockerels as well as hens and they're all free range.

I'll eat eggs in any form and love a sloppy scrambled egg (plus I used to keep hens and am well used to all forms of fertilised and unfertilised eggs as we used to hatch our own chicks. Cockerels are not kept lightly...)

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 12/02/2025 13:39

Quiche is revolting. Egg and cream in lard and flour?

My cousin keeps chickens and I get them all from her.

To be fair I wasn't answering your post so much as all the others who were being squeamish about 'bits' in eggs.

Does your cousin keep cockerels and hatch her own chicks? That's the only time you run the risk of fertilised eggs.

They still won't have any sort of umbilical cord

Yes she does.

Yes she does.

You might have to take to buying your eggs from someone who doesn't then.

Picklelily99 · 12/02/2025 14:01

Hahaha, I thought it was just me! I love eggs - poached, fried, scrambled, etc BUT I hardly ever actually eat them because when I think of what they are, it puts me right off! I'll make a mean omelette for my husband and think it looks so tasty, but then think " hmm, shame it's made with eggs, that's a no from me"!?

Talipesmum · 12/02/2025 14:14

Another one for balance - love eggs in all their forms, white bits and “stringy” bits are all part and parcel and totally fine to eat. Soft scrambled eggs, soft boiled eggs with v runny yolks, fried (I get very very cross if the yolk ends up hard when I want it to be runny, sends me into a light sulk). Baked, poached, in meringue, mousses, quiches, omelette, shakshuka, all good for me! They are a bit weird if you think about it, but I drink milk and eat meat, no more weird than that. Mm eggs.

Katemax82 · 12/02/2025 14:34

My mum was a chef and hated eggs

newrubylane · 12/02/2025 14:50

I can't deal with runny egg at all.

LazyArsedMagician · 12/02/2025 14:55

I love eggs but it takes only one snotty boiled egg to make me avoid them for a bit.

yakamoza · 12/02/2025 15:48

I love chocolate but hate chocolate flavoured things. So I hate chocolate cake, brownies, chocolate ice cream, etc, etc... Don't know if it's weird but it's just the way I am. Have always been like that 😃

discdiscsnap · 12/02/2025 16:23

Love runny egg and soldiers, scrambled egg or omelette.

I do like poached and fried eggs but yeah sometimes they gross me out

CluelessAboutBiology · 12/02/2025 16:33

I’ll eat omelettes. I’ll eat friied eggs if they have been cooked on both sides so the white is properly set and not “wobbly” and the yolk has to be set. Can’t bear the runny yellow bit. Poached eggs need to be well cooked so the yolk is solid.

i can’t eat boiled eggs or scrambled eggs at all. Scrambled egg looks like 🤢

Blankscreen · 12/02/2025 16:38

I have found my people. I hate eggs (fried/poached/ boiled/scrambled/ and don't get me started on egg mayonnaise sandwiches 🤮.

Even the word egg makes me feel weird.

I can just about eat hot quiche if it has lots of ham and cheese.

I also don't like cows milk or ANY hot drinks. The smell of milk and tea turns my stomach.
