Am I being a massive bloody prude or is this the hill to die on?

We have a 4 children. 2DS aged 24 &21, DD1 who is 13 and dd2 who was a surprise is 4.

DD1 is very into Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpinter, Charlie xcx etc. she 14 and is obsessed.
I'm happy to let her listen to whatever (within reason)

As a family we have a shared Vinyl player that is DH's pride and joy. Each child wants to buy albums for the vinyl as they like the sound of it and whoever chooses the records on a Sunday gets to have them playing through Sunday dinner etc.

Oldest DD's birthday is coming up soon and she wants as part of her presents the Charlie XCX 'brat and it's complicated' release on vinyl and I said yes but Charlie xcx has released this vinyl album with white powder inside the record that moves around on the vinyl player and it's meant
To be like a bag of cocaine.

DH thinks it's hideous and sends the wrong message coming and I'd usually disagree and say things have changed since our generation but I think this is awful

If our daughter is correct then lots of her yr 9 friends will get a vinyl copy of an album where this is white powder inside the record that moves around when it's played?

Am I out of touch? I just think this is Insane

Am I being a massive bloody prude or is this the hill to die on?

I think saying no to that version is perfectly reasonable, and that's what I would do

But also here's a sampling of the lyrics

(Ayy) Ooh, these bitches, we tied
(Ayy) Art is not a competition
(Ayy) Rating go up when the clothes come off
(Ayy) But a real bitch come when the dick goes up, like
(Ayy) Ooh, these bitches rip off
(Ayy) Wish they could be OG, but they not
(Ayy) We going psycho, we going off
(Ayy) Yeah, me and Charli, we the party girl gods
(Ayy) Oh baby, you mad watchin' me win
(Ayy) Do it again 'cause I'm Kesha, bitch
(Ayy) Makin' me sick, nominated
(Ayy) All the motherfuckers better be prayin'
(Ayy) Singin' my song, singin' along
(Ayy) TikTok bitch 'til the kingdom come
(Ayy) Give 'em a hit, they can eat shit
(Ayy) Choke on my name when you suck on my dick

So I'm not sure where the surprise is coming from TBH.

Aah Shakespeare. He was a genius wasn't he?

This is nothing new! In my youth (Britpop era) there was uproar about the CD single cover for Pulps 'Sorted For E's And Wizz'. You could fold it up into a sleeve to hide drugs in 🤣

I had the single but I never turned into a junkie 😜

This song is anti drugs isn’t it? At least that is my interpretation.

RubyRedBow · 11/02/2025 07:28

All Sabrina sings about is sex isn’t it?

fourelementary · 11/02/2025 07:31

Fair enough to not buy the “fake coke” version of the other version is available. I wouldn’t even bother about the lyrics tbh- she’s going to be 14. And as many many apps have said- that’s what pop music has been referencing and upsetting parents about for generations- sex, drugs et al.

Though it is a good point about it not exactly being Sunday dinner music!! And maybe an awareness of the lyrics so you don’t let the 4 year old start singing along is good too!! SC one is very catchy and I was quite thrown when hearing the non radio edit and she cheerful sings motherfucker to her boyfriend… though I agree it fits better than the radio edit!

Sassybooklover · 11/02/2025 07:32

I wouldn't allow it either. We have a drug addict in our extended family, and I have seen how it's destroyed his life and immediate family. It's a hard no from me. Glamourising drugs, is irresponsible. Buy the normal version for your daughter. I would be questioning an artists judgement, if they believe this is the type of vinyl they are releasing, is acceptable, in today's society.

MelisandeLongfield · 11/02/2025 07:34

The cassette single of Oasis's Cigarettes and Alcohol came in its own 'cigarette box' 😄I was in my 20s and had already discovered the delights of both, so I can't say it corrupted me.

Yes that was how I interpreted as a teen, that there was a dark side despite the rather catchy tune

All these posters gasping in shock over the lyrics and saying you'd ban it in your house - how exactly do you ban music when it's all digital these days? Do you propose to vet every song your child listens to on Spotify? Ban the radio?

She's 14, not four. I would bet good money that every single outraged person on here listened to their fair share of "shocking" music as teenagers...

Twas ever thus!

elm26 · 11/02/2025 07:43

I'm 31 and it was rife in my clubbing days, I've never ever touched it or any drugs, I was a drinker for sure but I saw what drugs turned people into and it's horrific.

I wouldn't be buying this. It is a hill I'd die on. I wouldn't have anything of the sort in my house either.

Disgusting that it's deemed to be "normal" in my generation.

starsinthedarksky · 11/02/2025 07:44

At 14 your daughter is going to know what drugs are, especially if she is a Charli XCX fan.

Personally, I would purchase the present she wants and use it as an opportunity for open communication between you both about drugs. Sit her down and tell her you’re willing to buy it and talk about the image, what it means and that by no means are you buying it to promote drug use. Talk about drugs, the effects they have (long and short term) etc.

Motomum23 · 11/02/2025 07:46

Like all things in life turn it into a parenting lesson. Let her know the downsides of drugs - let her see the photos of some poor teen in intensive care. Teach while she's still receptive to it.
And no I wouldn't buy a white powdered record but boy would my teen know why.... thankfully my teen is in to Kpop

madamweb · 11/02/2025 07:46

I'd draw the line at the fake coke version too, and I am a fairly relaxed parent.
But coke takes victims of both it's users and those who produce and supply it.

As far as they lyrics go, you aren't going to be able to stop your child hearing it. And tbh when I was that age (even now) half the time I couldn't work out what the singer was saying (or if I could,.I didn't get the real meaning). But yes, do ensure you are balancing it with lots of sensible conversation around sex and other aspects of teen /early adult life and instilling decent values in her.

I also read an article the other day about the importance of ensuring teens spend time with their family, so that their peer group isn't their only influence. From a musical perspective I would say keep introducing her to music from every era and every genre.

outthereandbeyond · 11/02/2025 07:47

Keep drugs away from your children and children away from your drugs.

I don’t think this record should be bought to normalise anything. It sends the wrong message.

Tcateh · 11/02/2025 07:48

I'm running for the Simon and Garfunkel as we speak.

That's Sunday roast music.

Lilactimes · 11/02/2025 07:49

Can you get the non limited edition album without the powder in it?? Assuming that exists!
in terms of the words/ content 14 year olds are going to stream it even if you forbid a physical copy. It’s tricky but like other posters have said many generations have liked music their parents thought were shocking.

GiveMeSpanakopita · 11/02/2025 07:49

You're not being a prude, but then I would say that all of Charli Xcx's music is about drugs, sex and clubbing. Bumpin That and 365 are both very explicit in their praise of party drugs but there's implicit references throughout all her music going back to Fancy with Iggy Azealia which is about doing coke and partying in a hotel room.

The stage name Charli XCX is a pretty explicit reference to coke and ecstasy.

They’re listening to it over Sunday dinner with a 4yo there!

BeforeTheFall · 11/02/2025 04:48

I wouldn’t buy that either, but would also use It as an excuse to talk about all the exploitation, abuse, trafficking, death and political hell in countries in South America.

Yeah I’d say I don’t agree ethically, as lots of people die because of drugs, it creates lots of problems, rather than “don’t do drugs”. Kids may relate to that more. And get the non-powder version.

Why WOULDNT you want to listen to that as the whole family tucks into their roast chicken?

what a wholesome family soundtrack

At least Jarvis is an excellent lyricists unlike this artist I've never heard of oh dear I sound like my mother 😂

Starlight7080 · 11/02/2025 07:58

I have a similar age dd who likes the same things . But I have very frank conversations about drugs and sex and so on . And how especially famous people shouldn't glorify it and try to influence bad habits.
I would buy the copy without the powder and say you won't support such a stupid publicity stunt .
If she wants it when she is an adult then that's her choice

Summerhillsquare · 11/02/2025 08:00

It's a great teaching and learning opportunity surely. Some people DO take drugs, explain the consequences. Also explain satire/criticism through art.
