Ainu to think Angela Rayners has been set up to fail on her 1.5m homes target ?
you can barely get planning permission through for a small extension in under 10 weeks let alone 1.5 m new homes
Every month that goes by the shortage compounds
I wonder if Kier has set her up to fail

That's why Labour are using private healthcare to support NHS. Bunging a few million £ to their mates.

which the Tories would never dream of doing of course.

But we aren't talking about Tories cos they aren't in government. This thread is about Rayner/Labour so whataboutery isn't relevant

From the delegates eligible to vote at Labour conference where policy is decided, the delegates come from three places: local Labour parties, trade unions and socialist societies. The local parties and trade unions (along with other affiliated socialist societies) each make up 50% of the vote on the conference floor.

So yes they can dictate policy.

No they can’t. They can contribute to discussion and vote, but don’t have a majority so others would have to agree. Policy isn’t dictated by conference, though it does have an influence.

Ang from Housing will be judged in a couple of years on results.
However I believe we are heading into a recession, and if the government doesn’t come up with some more funding for the house building, she’ll fail by a good margin.
The government could equally reduce immigration to bare minimum and reduce some pressure that way.

Hermitta · 09/02/2025 13:17

We don't need more housing. We need less people.

If the population keeps growing at its expected rate, then living standards and quality of live will be horrific within a few decades.

YABU because 'Angela from Housing' is just plain nasty

Sorry OP, but your extension won’t help the housing targets.

Ps didn’t mean to quote a random post, but can’t see how to remove that bit.

@mitogoshigg ”Finally scrapping stamp duty for people over 60 downsizing by at least 2 bedrooms to properties of 2 or fewer bedrooms worth under £500k to incentivise downsizing freeing up large properties. I haven't thought through this obvious, I'm not a politician or housing expert but I see through work so many couples and single older people in houses of 4 or 5 bedrooms they are struggling to maintain yet they won't move because of the cost of moving.”

No, it should be change stamp duty for everyone or no one. Why should people who have massive untaxed gains be exempted? Sends a bad signal to tax payers struggling to pay their way.
I’d prefer replacing Stamp Duty with a capital gains tax (for a one off tax) or better a monthly land value tax. If you own a £100k house you pay substantially less than someone in a £1m house.

And yet as is often pointed out by the Boomer haters on here, these £1million homes were inexpensive to buy compared to now.
Therefore older people owning these homes may well be living on a very small income and couldn't afford these taxes.

I think its very worrying that anyone wants to manipulate taxes to prevent the elderly from having a free choice over remaining in a home they've bought and paid for.
It's not up to the elderly to bear the brunt of successive government's lack of care or foresight regarding housing.

The tories started that system though

dottydodah · 09/02/2025 13:21

Well Portsmouth Council say they have no room to build the amount the govt was suggesting .Its a fairly small town, and is fairly compacted already.I think some other councils will have similar problems .Add the amount of Architects,Bricklayers ,Glaziers ,carpenters and painters/electricians /labourers the list is endless ! Its a plan which hasnt been thought out properly .We are a small island with a lot of housing being concentrated in the south east.I dont think he set Ms Rayner up to fail exactly .I think they say a large figure, and then do say half .Everyone will be pleased ,from the naysayers to the people who are in need of housing .I agree "Angela from housing"is sexist and patronising .She is an elected member of parliament FFS!

Have you got evidence of this? Political parties of all colours have always had donors

Tryingtokeepgoing · 09/02/2025 13:21

Given that the first two items on that list are clearly untrue I see no point in spending much more time on that article 😂

How much better off are people feeling since employer NI increases result in fewer job and lower pay rises, energy bills increasing by £300 (despite pre election statements that they’d cut them), council tax rises of up to 25% and inflation in retail, hospitality, manufacturing leading to price rises as a direct result of tax rises…

Some serious fact checking needed on that article!!

This. If Labour want to build 1.5 million homes they will have to build new hospitals, schools, GP surgeries etc as well.

This country will end up like a concrete jungle.

People seem to forget it was Tony Blair who originally wanted to privatise the NHS and it's still suffering as a result.

TonTonMacoute · 09/02/2025 13:25

I get the impression that Angela is consciously keeping a low profile atm. I don't know if it's true but I wouldn't blame her.

The housing target is completely unattainable, as anyone involved in housing knows and I can't understand why governments and civil servants keep on ignoring this fact.

The volume house builders control the housing market in this country, they build as and when they want to to keep prices up and make the profits they deem necessary.

The social housing that we need most will not be built unless the government pays for it.

How much of that was caused by Liz Truss crashing the economy?

rwalker · 09/02/2025 13:27

I’m surprised she actually answered and committed to a question
every interview I’ve seen she’s been asked a very direct question on housing , NI ,the fact there wasn’t a 22billion home and various other things she doesn’t give one straight answer it’s embarrassing

None of them give straight answers. They just quote robotic scripted responses and get angry when pressed/challenged. The anger that comes off Reeves, Phillipson, Starmer + Rayner when challenged is ridiculous. They just aren't used to it and quite blatantly obviously believe that they shouldn't be held to account

Redrosesposies · 09/02/2025 13:30

edwinbear · 09/02/2025 13:03

@mitogoshigg I like the idea of incentivising people to down size via stamp duty. Of course nobody should be forced out of their home, just because their DC have moved out and they no longer need such a big house. But many older people would actually like to down size, but cannot afford the stamp duty.

Yes they can they just don't want to pay it.
For the record I am not a Labour supporter.

Diomi · 09/02/2025 13:31

There are plenty of things you can criticise the Labour Party for at the moment without resorting to calling her Angela from Housing. It just devalues any point you might be trying to make.

Jossjt · 09/02/2025 13:31

The Tories were a car crash in slow motion.

This government is a train crash at high speed, breaking the speed of sound.

Two Tier, Rachel from accounts, Angela ‘oi scum’ Rayner, Bridget ‘a cv only her mother could employ’, David Lamey, Louise ‘phones4me’ Haigh, Red Miliband, Wes ‘all fur coat, no knickers’ Streeting, and some other clowns on the front bench.

They are clueless.
