Ainu to think Angela Rayners has been set up to fail on her 1.5m homes target ?
you can barely get planning permission through for a small extension in under 10 weeks let alone 1.5 m new homes
Every month that goes by the shortage compounds
I wonder if Kier has set her up to fail

It just keeps coming:

https://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2025/feb/21/uk-record-january-budget-surplus-tax-take-retail-sales-economy-business-live-news

So far this financial year, government borrowing has now reached £118.2bn – £11.6bn more than at the same point in the last financial year and the fourth-highest financial year-to-January borrowing since monthly records began in 1993.

Parsley1234 · 21/02/2025 07:55

And the sad thing is she believes her lies and Starmer does too talk about a bloody slam dunk

EasternStandard · 21/02/2025 09:47

They're tied together. If she goes, he should and he likes his freebie glasses too much for that

That higher borrowing doesn't even include increased defence spending

TheNuthatch · 21/02/2025 10:08

Colour me surprised. A labour government borrowing eye-watering sums.
It's like giving a 5 year old free rein with a credit card.

TheNuthatch · 21/02/2025 10:14

Macron has won first dibs on the Whitehouse. Macron is going on Monday, Starmer on Thursday. Bless.

Upstartled · 21/02/2025 12:30

The private sector is, predictably, shedding jobs, cutting at such a pace we've not seen since (covid excluded) 2009.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 21/02/2025 12:31

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2025/feb/21/rachel-reeves-given-smaller-than-expected-15bn-tax-boost-to-uk-finances

Funny that.

Almost as if they were told it would happen.

Upstartled · 21/02/2025 12:41

It's a combination that together is going to make selling the imminent and ever increasing spending cuts as a benevolent attempt to help people 'get back to work', look like full scale trolling.

TheNuthatch · 21/02/2025 14:18

All eyes on Germany this weekend. I wonder if the Ukraine situation will affect the result?
The polls are still showing Merz in the lead with Afd second.

Exactly the same technology used with Brexit, Trump etc.

People should get back to work irrespective of defence spending though. The current set up is unsustainable

Yeah, I agree, the current set-up is unsustainable. But the spending cuts are being framed as a pro-disability help-to-work government flex to empower claimants to employment, that's a harder sell when the job market is shrinking.

Being honest and saying that it's an austerity measure doesn't have the same ring.

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds is now being investigated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority for describing himself as a solicitor when he was in fact a trainee.
This can not be dismissed as an administrative error on his CV. He stood up in the house and said he had been working as a solicitor.

Andrew Gwynne who was sacked for appalling WhatsApp messages is now being investigated by the Commons standards watchdog for "actions causing significant damage to the reputation of the house as a whole".

Parsley1234 · 21/02/2025 20:15

@TheNuthatch just beyond belief I’m so not incredulous I’ve just seen the video of the Bibas family being taken what the hell is wrong with the world the mother with the two kids so scared 😢😢😢😢😢

Angela may have her department budget cut off the back of the rise in defence spending

Surprised this headline belongs to The Guardian

Extremists would not need to create an authoritarian state in Britain: Starmer is doing that for them

www.theguardian.com/global/commentisfree/2025/feb/22/keir-starmer-labour-illiberal-laws-hard-right-authoritarians

TheNuthatch · 22/02/2025 10:51

Thanks for the link ES. The Guardian have been brutal of late. Even those on the traditional left are unsupportive of this government. Surely it's just a matter of time before the lefties within Labour start to turn on KS.
I'm struggling to work out who this Labour government are supposed to represent!
It seems their last bastion of support is MN.
