To let dog poo in the street

AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street?

We live near a field and DH usually takes our dog over there. He's going away for a few days so I will solely be walking the dog. My problem is I get very very anxious in the dark, can't see properly even with the torch and it really stresses me out. Like heart/head pounding. Previously I have walked the dog around the estate we live on and he poos on the pavement. Some houses have no front garden and I always feel very guilty as it's so close to their homes. I ALWAYS pick up but you know sometimes it's not perfect. I'm aware of lots of doorbell cameras to. My dog refuses to poo in our garden. So AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street allowing me relax a little that I'm not offending anyone or do I need to wait until it's light. He is used to very early and late walks.

Unless you’re licking the pavement, it’s not a problem.

It's absolutely a problem if you accidentally track it into the house.

No dog should poo on the street or a field, pickup or not. Picking up leaves remnants, it’s disgusting.
You don’t poo on the street and pick it up, so why should your dog? Dog nappies, or some other way that does not involve the public streets.
Grass fields and verges are just as bad.

How about you splat a dog poo on your face then pick it off, see if you still smell it - not completely gone has it…

I actually agree with this having seen the amount of dog poo on the streets go up and up in recent years. Last year I managed to step in it three times, twice this winter when the paths were covered with leaves. On one of those occasions I managed to track it onto my carpet when I walked in the door. I don’t have a garden so I have to do the cleaning over the bath. The last time it happened I had to take several breaks because I kept nearly vomiting despite wearing a mask. It took me three hours in total.

The year before I stepped in it just getting out the car. It’s absolutely disgusting stuff and picking it up doesn’t always get rid of it all.

I think nappies make sense, although no doubt you’d start finding nappies hanging from trees.

H0NEYPOT · 09/02/2025 07:10

Cows, horses and pigs are vegetarians. Their poo wont kill anyone

I'm sure this must be a wind up reply no?

No it is not a windup, to let dogs shit on pavements is bizarre Pavements are not private spaces for your dog to toilet.

Its not a wild animal, which isn’t under your control, you are taking it there to toilet. Pavements are for people to use to get around on. Dog shit picking leaves dog shit behind. Allowing shit on a public pavement should be illegal. I cannot understand how it was ever allowed, it literally makes no sense, it’s so filthy.

Lighteningstrikes · 09/02/2025 12:22

If you own a dog, it’s your responsibility to pick it up or you shouldn’t have committed to getting one in the first place.

Read the OP's actual post. She does.

I swear that half the replies you get on dog threads are trolling. They are so overly hysterical and hyperbolic and the "ideas" mentioned are so ridiculous and unachievable the posts can't be real. Adding 'dog' into the title of a post also seems to immediately curb the ability of people to read the actual opening post and not just reply to what they think the post is about.....

I don't have a dog, don't especially love dogs and think this post is unhinged.

NiftyKoala · 09/02/2025 13:02

I would go hard on training him to go in the garden. That way he might not go during your walks. It will be a difficult few days but worth it in my opinion.

billybear · 09/02/2025 13:22

get a head torch i walk mine early 1 day a week better than a torch ,

Haha yes let’s put nappies on the foxes, birds, cats, squirrels too. If animals can’t behave like humans then why should they even be allowed on this planet that we are so diligently ruining.

Fox numbers peak at around 350k. There are 13.5 million dogs.

And 13 million of them seem to be bloody French Bulldogs 😂

Zusammengebrochen · 09/02/2025 14:18

I hate the modern trend of dogs pooing anywhere, regardless of whether it's picked up or not. Dogs should be trained to poo away from residential and built up areas.

Yes, most of which are clearly not owned by dog-lovers as the breed has so many health issues 😢

Yellowrosessmellpetaly · 09/02/2025 14:27

Walk the dog on streets where it's lit.

stichguru · 09/02/2025 14:29

If you are on the street and he needs to poo, then you let him and you pick it up the best you can, cleaning it down with water is great.

NEVER encourage him to go on the street. Don't take him onto the street if you know he is about to go and he isn't already there. That's honestly selfish and disgusting!

I live in a built up area. My dog has access to my garden. She stills chooses to poo on the street, usually in one particular lane. I pick it up, so no problem. I am acting within the law, regardless of what people on MN insist.
She is very old. I am not going to be training her in anything at this stage in her life.

Any reason why she wasn't trained to poo in your garden to start with?

She is trained to poo in my garden. She asks to go outside if the door is shut. But if she needs to go on a walk, she needs to go. I pick it up, so no problem.

Zusammengebrochen · 09/02/2025 14:49

If she's trained to go in your garden them she'd be going in your garden though. Dog owners just don't realise how other folk don't want to see or smell fresh 💩 even if it is picked up.

She does go in my garden. She is not trained to go nowhere else but my garden, if that is what you are getting at?
She is very old, and not able to hold her poo in as much as a younger dog might. And she has a bit of doggy dementia, so I am not going to be training her to not poo outside my own residence.
Again, if she poos, I pick it. I am doing what is required of me by law. Made up MN rules do not apply out in the real world.

YeOldeGreyhound · 09/02/2025 14:55

And dog owners don't like seeing or smelling fresh poo either. It is like you are saying we do like it because we deal with it. I certainly do not, but I pick it up because I am a responsible dog owner.

Me neither, but we have to do it as responsible dog owners.
