To let dog poo in the street

AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street?

We live near a field and DH usually takes our dog over there. He's going away for a few days so I will solely be walking the dog. My problem is I get very very anxious in the dark, can't see properly even with the torch and it really stresses me out. Like heart/head pounding. Previously I have walked the dog around the estate we live on and he poos on the pavement. Some houses have no front garden and I always feel very guilty as it's so close to their homes. I ALWAYS pick up but you know sometimes it's not perfect. I'm aware of lots of doorbell cameras to. My dog refuses to poo in our garden. So AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street allowing me relax a little that I'm not offending anyone or do I need to wait until it's light. He is used to very early and late walks.

No-one will care if you’re picking it up. I prefer mine to poo on grass and he does too, but occasionally when desperate he’s gone on the pavement

Lemonademoney · 08/02/2025 20:00

If you pick it up I don’t see an issue but o do have massive issues with people who let their dogs pee on peoples front lawns - keep them on a lead and on public land

CaptainBeanThief · 08/02/2025 20:01

My dog did a sloppy poo half a mile up the road from us - my husband came back and ran back up the street with the kettle ( just boiled) and cleaned the best he could up
😀

coldcallerbaiter · 08/02/2025 20:03

No wild animals are fine and have every right, we don’t see fox poo everywhere. There’s dog shit and remnants everywhere. You take the dog out on the street then it is the same as you yourself squatting your own human poop and picking it up, it’s your pet.

I nevertheless understood the shit and pick mentality.

Haha yes let’s put nappies on the foxes, birds, cats, squirrels too. If animals can’t behave like humans then why should they even be allowed on this planet that we are so diligently ruining.

Lol, agree!

No dog should poo on the street or a field, pickup or not. Picking up leaves remnants, it’s disgusting.
You don’t poo on the street and pick it up, so why should your dog? Dog nappies, or some other way that does not involve the public streets.
Grass fields and verges are just as bad.

How about you splat a dog poo on your face then pick it off, see if you still smell it - not completely gone has it…

Seriously? Dog shits, you pick it up. It’s really not an issue.

Because woman get attacked on a daily basis by men and walking around in a dark field on your own is just an unnecessary risk when there are alternatives. You're clearly male.

I’m very much not male! I’m a middle-aged woman. I’m also a widow, and there’s no husband to accompany me anywhere.

Women picking up dogshit on dog walks after dark are not being “attacked on a daily basis by men”. I’m not denying that VAWG is too high, but it’s not so high that we need to stay in the house after the sun’s gone down. This isn’t Afghanistan.

Don't be a disgusting pig, pick up your dog's shit!!! 😠 😡

Was reading the very short post too much of a challenge for you?

It does happen on a daily basis, woman being attacked DAILY random attacks in the street, in the light, in the dark, whenever and wherever. Quiet country lanes in Norfolk, creepy parks in London. Doesn't matter. Good for you that you don't feel that threat but it doesn't mean its not real and you shouldn't shame her for that.

Why are people only reading the thread title and nothing else?! So irritating.

Bless you, OP. What do you think dog owners who live in towns and cities do?

Dog nappies? 😂

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 08/02/2025 20:18

I walk my dog around the streets and he always poos on grass verges, doesn't like pavement. I think it's easier to pick up from the grass than hard pavement.

I'm not minimising the issue at all, but the majority of attacks on women and girls are by people known to them, usually a partner or ex partner. Attacks by random men in the street are thankfully still very rare.

Edited for typo

Are you quite ok?
Should we also be doing this to cows and horses in your opinion? What animals do you draw the line with out of interest?

minisoksmakehardwork · 08/02/2025 20:24

If the dark is the issue, are you able to walk the dog earlier? Either way, if your dog is pooing in pavements it does need washing off if you're not able to pick it all up.

FoxtonFoxton · 08/02/2025 20:33

We live in a rural area with little traffic at night, so if I walk dog around the village, I walk along the road edge rather than on the path. If she goes before we reach the grass verge (rare) then I don't feel as bad about any potential residue left after picking up. I do actually take a bottle of warm soapy water with me to wash away anything so maybe I'm just really fussy. We are lucky that our village doesn't have a dog poo problem at all, despite the majority of households having a dog/dogs. Everyone picks up. Cat shit is another story but not much can be done about that one!!

HoskinsChoice · 08/02/2025 20:34

AnotherDayAnotherIdea · 08/02/2025 19:27

If you can get it in the gutter and still pick up, you will avoid leaving traces on the pavement.

Do not under any circumstances do this! That's incredibly dangerous both for the dog and any driver who may need to swerve to avoid your dog.

YeOldeGreyhound · 08/02/2025 20:35

You pick it up, it is not a problem. My dog poos on pavements on the way to the park, and I pick it up.
It seems doing that is not enough for some people. Anti-bac wipes? For the pavement? Outside?😆

I draw the line at dogs. They are numerous. They are pets. They are on the pavements and verges that I use.

I do not need to walk through cow fields, that’s not a public space to get from A to B. I expect cow pats in a cow field. Horses walking the streets are very few nowadays and tend to poo in the road not pavement and you aren’t going to step in it by accident. Plus grass based diet is way less offensive stuff, less dangerous too.

Daily attacks by men they don’t know? You are going to have to provide some evidence here.

henlake7 · 08/02/2025 20:59

If your dog is a sloppy pooper then bring some water and cleaning product but otherwise just be diligent about picking it up.
My lot use the pavement as I have no garden, no car and the nearest green space is further then they can hold it. I just make sure I pick up after them, that's all you are required to do.

I also don't like walking after dark. It not so much the strange men, it's more the broken glass, general rubbish and (ironically) dog poop I can't see myself stepping in!

But no-ones talking about not picking up after dark because of being scared, the OP is saying she doesn't feel comfortable walking in a field after dark so instead is walking on the street - but still picking up.

FoxtonFoxton · 08/02/2025 21:04

I'm not scared of fields and lanes at night...but ours are in such bad condition that I snapped an ankle last January 2 miles from home and dare not risk it after dark, even with a great torch. Pot holes, ruts, deep tractor tyre tracks, overgrown hedges and tree roots, water logged. Can't wait until Summer.
