To let dog poo in the street

AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street?

We live near a field and DH usually takes our dog over there. He's going away for a few days so I will solely be walking the dog. My problem is I get very very anxious in the dark, can't see properly even with the torch and it really stresses me out. Like heart/head pounding. Previously I have walked the dog around the estate we live on and he poos on the pavement. Some houses have no front garden and I always feel very guilty as it's so close to their homes. I ALWAYS pick up but you know sometimes it's not perfect. I'm aware of lots of doorbell cameras to. My dog refuses to poo in our garden. So AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street allowing me relax a little that I'm not offending anyone or do I need to wait until it's light. He is used to very early and late walks.

No dog should poo on the street or a field, pickup or not. Picking up leaves remnants, it’s disgusting.
You don’t poo on the street and pick it up, so why should your dog? Dog nappies, or some other way that does not involve the public streets.
Grass fields and verges are just as bad.

How about you splat a dog poo on your face then pick it off, see if you still smell it - not completely gone has it…

Oh for god sake what about fox pooh, bird shit and spitting? why not just kill every living animal ...owners should clean it properly....you should wear shoes and change coming in.

So rather than deal with your choice to have a dog and own that nightmare, you inflict the nightmare on to the rest of us, who are NOT choosing to have dogs, and don't have a choice about walking over remnants of shit, day in, day out. I think we have to stop with the lie that dogs won't poo in their own garden, Train them to do so. Do not leave the house til it is done.

And also, just out of interest, what are your views on pet cats?

Horse poo is objectively more benign than dog poo, however "offensive" you claim to find it. Horses are herbivorous. Their shit isn't dangerous to humans and livestock. It doesn't cause blindness.

Why are you assuming dogs don't take worming tablets and vaccines. Cats are the primary source along with undercooked meats.

Because many owners are bad owners. If they are letting their dogs shit everywhere and no picking up, it's a fair assumption that they are a shithead re other aspects of pet ownership.

OP, my dog does sturdy easy to pick up poo, if yours is doing runny poos, I suggest changing diet, its not normal.

It took a lot of trial and error to find the perfect balance for my dog, some dogs thrive on raw diet, I'd suggest a high quality kibble and keep going through brands until you find one the dog loves and produces 'neat poo😃

Was going to say the same. If it’s not firm enough to pick up without leaving any residue I’d be looking at the diet.

KnickerlessParsons · 09/02/2025 00:40

You shouldn't be letting your dog poo in the fields either 🤮

As long is it's picked up there is no issue surely?

I agree that dog owners should leave no trace but to say that an animal should not poo outside is ridiculous!

Where I live fox poo is a much bigger problem than dog muck! What do we do about those?

Lozzq · 09/02/2025 00:47

My dog poos on the street very often and I pick it up no problem. My ‘pet hate’ is when it’s a slopper, I do feel a bit guilty about that. However, I found adding a bit of oat bran to her food gives her nice hard poos, absolutely win!

SnowFrogJelly · 09/02/2025 00:48

Why is it a problem if you always pick up Confused

Read the OP

No one said husband didn't pick up in field
No one said she wouldn't pick up on pavement

Op, if you are worried about just take some wipes as well as lots of bags and torch / your phone torchJob done. Obviously pull doggie from doing near drive etc if possible so out of line of path. As you can see vast majority, if the read properly, are fine with this.

And there's nothing wrong with being a little nervous at night, am sure will be fine though

WearyAuldWumman · 09/02/2025 01:14

As others have said, take water to rinse off any residue.

I live close to a field and I'm sick of having to clean excrement off the pavement in front of my house. It tend to use a basin of hot water with some Zoflora.

It was a particular problem when my late husband was still alive: he had poor vision following his stroke as well as hemiparesis. I'd have to stop him suddenly and re-route him - the last thing we wanted with his health problems was for excrement and germs to be trailed into the house.

Yes, I am pissed off with people letting their dogs shit on the pavement. Happens right outside my house, regularly. Gross. MAKE your dog shit in YOUR garden, don't leave for your walk until it has.

Unless you’re licking the pavement, it’s not a problem.

I've missed the bleaching post, but - yes - I've thrown basins of hot water and bleach on the pavement in front of my gate to get rid of dog dirt. (I rinse with plain hot water afterwards.)

Can't stand dog mess.
