To let dog poo in the street

AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street?

We live near a field and DH usually takes our dog over there. He's going away for a few days so I will solely be walking the dog. My problem is I get very very anxious in the dark, can't see properly even with the torch and it really stresses me out. Like heart/head pounding. Previously I have walked the dog around the estate we live on and he poos on the pavement. Some houses have no front garden and I always feel very guilty as it's so close to their homes. I ALWAYS pick up but you know sometimes it's not perfect. I'm aware of lots of doorbell cameras to. My dog refuses to poo in our garden. So AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street allowing me relax a little that I'm not offending anyone or do I need to wait until it's light. He is used to very early and late walks.

Me neither, but we have to do it as responsible dog owners.

Yes, it is just part of having a dog. When I first got her, I used to wear a glove, and also pick up loads of grass and leaves so I didn't feel it through the bag 😂

Mumofyellows · 09/02/2025 14:59

Wow! There are some very angry people on here today. The state humans leave the countryside and beaches in is far more concerning to me, vomit in the street, rubbish all over the verges and left over our beautiful beach after a sunny weekend, sewage dumped in the rivers and seas, needles in play parks, I could go on and on.
I most definitely will not be purchasing nappies for my dogs and horses 😂.

Zusammengebrochen · 09/02/2025 14:59

There's perhaps some genuine exceptions @YeOldeGreyhound, but there really are a lot of disgusting dog owners who think it's fine to let their dogs poo anywhere. Even when they pick it up they walk along, past shops, cafes, houses, swinging a big lump of poo in a bag. It's horrible.

I'm not angry, I just don't want to be seeing or smelling dog poo. Surely that's not unreasonable?

If there isn't a bin there is no choice but carrying it. Do you really think we like having to carry it, till we have somewhere to put it.

There's no need to swing it the way some folk do. 🤔

What are they meant to do until they get home / get to a dog bin? Much prefer people carrying it with them than hanging bags off a tree (which far too many people seem to think is a solution)

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/02/2025 15:04

I understand what you mean, op. It’s not always possible to remove every trace with a poo bag. I resolved this by also carrying anti-bac wipes and using one to clear anything that couldn’t be lifted by bag.

Never seen anyone swing a poop bag around😃

You're lucky. At least half the folk I see are merrily swinging poo bags as they walk. I fear for the day that one bursts.

Well, not swinging it around would be a start. 😬

@Zusammengebrochen Dog owners should of course pick up after their dogs and dispose of it properly, that's a given. No one wants to see it on the street, I have two dogs and wouldn't want to either. But to say you can't even stand someone walking past with it bagged, or people to say they shouldn't even go anywhere aside from their own gardens is unreasonable. Mine always use the garden as soon as they wake up, but out on a walk there's a chance they might go again, not always, but they might and I can't stop them.
I didn't want to see a pile of human vomit on the floor outside this morning as I walked to my favourite cafe for a Sunday coffee, but there it was so I averted my eyes and continued my day 🤷🏽‍♀️

Mumofyellows · 09/02/2025 15:12

@Zusammengebrochen the swinging though, that's weird, I get that 🤣 I am now going to be looking out for this! God I hope I'm not a poo bag swinger?! 😂

I'm expressing my view - which is that dogs shouldn't be pooing in built up locations. I appreciate that others will find reasons excuses to justify it. Of course picking it up is important too, regardless of where it is.

I suspect some folk don't realise just quite how 'swingy' they are. 😂

I don’t think it’s a problem if you make sure it’s all picked up. Maybe take a bottle of water to wash the pavement if you can’t get it all.

I’d agree with this. I’ve gone out with the dog having an anxious tum and hoped I’d get to the park. Didn’t make it and picked up most but there were some smears so I’d took a bottle in my back pack with pet friendly antibacterial wash diluted in it and swilled it down.

dogs will go where they go and as long as you’re thoughtful enough to pick up don’t worry. Cats owners won’t be going out watching cats to pick up, and local foxes will be going where ever (we get foxes in our garden and neighbours cats - I just pick up when I notice it).

Mumofyellows · 09/02/2025 15:15

You’re dog a dog lover are you?

How do you feel about foxes?

I think it’s the worzel gumage woman again. The one who calls for a cull of all dogs but would like badgers wandering the streets? Or it could be the diaxo ball person. Sam folk on the dog baiting threads every time they just started to change name. But you can usually tell by their language and style of posting.

Likewhatever · 09/02/2025 15:31

Do what people are required by law to do in Spain, carry a bottle of soapy water or water vinegar mix and wash any area where your dog has fouled. Take home the bagged poo, leave no trace.

Justalittlehotpotato · 09/02/2025 15:34

coldcallerbaiter · 08/02/2025 19:31

No dog should poo on the street or a field, pickup or not. Picking up leaves remnants, it’s disgusting.
You don’t poo on the street and pick it up, so why should your dog? Dog nappies, or some other way that does not involve the public streets.
Grass fields and verges are just as bad.

How about you splat a dog poo on your face then pick it off, see if you still smell it - not completely gone has it…

This can’t be a real comment, surely 😂😂😂

I hate it when people let their dog poo or wee on the pavement outside my house because it attracts other dogs to poo and wee there and it becomes a big toilet with poo smears, wee and not everyone even bothers to scoop. I had to get rid of all the plants at the front and put vinegar down regularly to stop it happening.

Indeed. I have to routinely use dilute bleach on the path outside our garden.

My post was never about not picking up the dog poo! I pick up 100% of the time as does DH field or street. Infact I've picked up other people's dogs poo. I have gone back with baby wipes to clear the tarmac outside of a nearby house.

My question was to see if it offended people when my dog poos in the street.

Why does it matter why I'm anxious to go out into a field in the dark? It's not relevant to my question.

As long as it's picked up all is fine

LawrenceSMarlowforPresident · 09/02/2025 15:51

Threads about dogs always bring out the loony posts on MN. 😅 It's quite entertaining.

@zeroheroxdon't worry at all, what you're doing is fine. As PPs have said, bring a bottle of water to clean any residue and possibly look at your dog's diet. But don't doubt yourself due to the few frankly insane posts on this thread.
