To let dog poo in the street

AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street?

We live near a field and DH usually takes our dog over there. He's going away for a few days so I will solely be walking the dog. My problem is I get very very anxious in the dark, can't see properly even with the torch and it really stresses me out. Like heart/head pounding. Previously I have walked the dog around the estate we live on and he poos on the pavement. Some houses have no front garden and I always feel very guilty as it's so close to their homes. I ALWAYS pick up but you know sometimes it's not perfect. I'm aware of lots of doorbell cameras to. My dog refuses to poo in our garden. So AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street allowing me relax a little that I'm not offending anyone or do I need to wait until it's light. He is used to very early and late walks.

No dog should poo on the street or a field, pickup or not. Picking up leaves remnants, it’s disgusting.
You don’t poo on the street and pick it up, so why should your dog? Dog nappies, or some other way that does not involve the public streets.
Grass fields and verges are just as bad.

How about you splat a dog poo on your face then pick it off, see if you still smell it - not completely gone has it…

Nothing better than a Mumsnet overreaction sometimes to make you chuckle 😂

Can you get him to go in your garden instead if you’re scared of the dark? If he needs to go, surely he won’t just refuse

Edited

Ah not necessarily. My dog refuses to go in our garden. I could walk him around for hours and he’d turn himself inside out before he’d do his business. It was a nightmare when he was recovering from spinal surgery and wasn’t allowed to be walked at all!

No wild animals are fine and have every right, we don’t see fox poo everywhere. There’s dog shit and remnants everywhere. You take the dog out on the street then it is the same as you yourself squatting your own human poop and picking it up, it’s your pet.

I nevertheless understood the shit and pick mentality.

Oh we get lots of fox shit and all sorts here. But we live near a river and the worst of all is goose poo. Absolutely everywhere COVERED in the stuff. Maybe we should start a campaign to get nappies on wild geese? We’d need a large team of volunteers to change them regularly but I assume you’d be up for it?

rookiemere · 08/02/2025 21:30

I actually find horse poo much more offensive.
There is a lot of it, it's generally on the road or path and riders make no attempt to clear up, although I do believe you can actually get horse nappies - although I might be making that bit up.

Don't be a disgusting pig, pick up your dog's shit!!! 😠 😡

What are you going on about, she said she would pick it up!

lurchermummy · 08/02/2025 21:31

So when your DH walks the dog on the field does he pick up its poo? He really should. Dog faeces can cause pregnant cows to abort.

And why die walking your dog round your estate cause you such anxiety? Surely there are streetlights? Yes you need to pick up the poo - think about children walking to school etc, they don't want to be treading in your dogs poo!

2025willbemytime · 08/02/2025 21:33

Dogs tend to need to poo right when and where they need to.

Pick it up, wash away residue. What's the drama?

Horse poo is objectively more benign than dog poo, however "offensive" you claim to find it. Horses are herbivorous. Their shit isn't dangerous to humans and livestock. It doesn't cause blindness.

OP said in her post that she always picks up.

zeroherox · 08/02/2025 22:05

My post was never about not picking up the dog poo! I pick up 100% of the time as does DH field or street. Infact I've picked up other people's dogs poo. I have gone back with baby wipes to clear the tarmac outside of a nearby house.

My question was to see if it offended people when my dog poos in the street.

Why does it matter why I'm anxious to go out into a field in the dark? It's not relevant to my question.

Could you sellotape a bag to to rear end of your dog and deal with the 'issue' when you get home?

I did this at Knebworth or Glastonbury or somewhere and it sort of worked, although by the end of the weekend the bag was pretty full and I was walking about like a dairy cow desperate to be milked!

Regrettably the bag came undone in the tent and went everywhere, but that shouldn't be a problem for you (or doggy) as you're only out for an hour or so.

In case you're wondering, the tent was a write-off so we left that behind. But no great lose really, it was very cheap - they make them in China by the million, don't you know?

rookiemere · 08/02/2025 22:09

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles I am a bit unclear, was the bag for you or for your dog ?

EXACTLY!!! Well said!

I am SICK of dog shit on the ground, in the park, pissy dog piss everywhere too - WHY, when we don't approve of humans doing this, do we give dogs a pass. Their shit is toxic. It is never properly picked up.

Yes, I am pissed off with people letting their dogs shit on the pavement. Happens right outside my house, regularly. Gross. MAKE your dog shit in YOUR garden, don't leave for your walk until it has.

So rather than deal with your choice to have a dog and own that nightmare, you inflict the nightmare on to the rest of us, who are NOT choosing to have dogs, and don't have a choice about walking over remnants of shit, day in, day out. I think we have to stop with the lie that dogs won't poo in their own garden, Train them to do so. Do not leave the house til it is done.

Me.
I wouldn't take a dog to a festival as it is can get a bit muddy.
Anyway, I don't have one.
A dog, that is.

Maybe we need small dog toilets in the park?

It actually would be better to have a designated area, completely cordoned off, for dogs to shit in. Anyone caught allowing their dog to crap elsewhere gets fined. Dogs are supposedly smart, so train them up to only poo where permitted. All the dog owners who claim it all gets picked up have to walk in this designated area barefoot, as, well, why not - it all gets picked up, doesn't it! They can put their shoes back on when they exit the area so that they aren't traipsing dog shit residue out again.

Yeah, horse shit is a far worse problem than dog shit on the pavements of the UK Confused

This is a great idea. Presumably dogs know not to shit all over the floors of their owners' houses, so they could easily be trained to extend the same courtesy to public pavements.
