To let dog poo in the street

AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street?

We live near a field and DH usually takes our dog over there. He's going away for a few days so I will solely be walking the dog. My problem is I get very very anxious in the dark, can't see properly even with the torch and it really stresses me out. Like heart/head pounding. Previously I have walked the dog around the estate we live on and he poos on the pavement. Some houses have no front garden and I always feel very guilty as it's so close to their homes. I ALWAYS pick up but you know sometimes it's not perfect. I'm aware of lots of doorbell cameras to. My dog refuses to poo in our garden. So AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street allowing me relax a little that I'm not offending anyone or do I need to wait until it's light. He is used to very early and late walks.

Well I feel very sorry for @FastFood who has been closely observing her animal's shite and it absolutely leaves no smears whatsoever - therefore, clean shit. Especially because we can't see the invisible bacteria 🙄

FastFood · 10/02/2025 16:27

Don't be sorry for me, I'm actually pleased to learn that I have an antiobiotic-shitting dog, that might be very convenient.

DiscoBaIIs · 10/02/2025 16:28

No one is suggesting eating off the pavement. We are explaining that even if you pick up the main bulk of the poo, bits are left behind, those bits get on the bottom of shoes, then transferred. Some will end up on the floors where children sit at school, put their hands down, and then touch their faces.

There are so few foxes, and they just don't spread the same diseases that dogs do.

It would be a kind and thoughtful thing NOT to let your dog poo on the pavement where people walk. It should be frowned upon. Dogs need to be trained to do it in their own homes. If you haven't got a garden, let it poo on your own floor, then pick that up - if, that is, you are so sure a plastic-wrapped hand will indeed pick up all traces of shit. Somehow I don't think people are going to opt for this though, they'd far rather the rest of us had to contend with dog shit on our kids' assembly floor.

@Newbie8918

Yet another very misguided person who thinks their animal has antiseptic properties - bet it never licks its nether regions either Confused

Another lazy dog owner who can't be bothered to train an animal.

Lazy dog owner????

Dog is a fully trained working breed, excellent temperament, no behavioural issues, fed an excellent diet (raw mixed), fully vaccinated, groomed 6 weekly, brushed daily, completely house trained, 100% recall, excellent with dogs and children, walks to heel and is crate trained (car and vet purposes only).

I'm a lazy dog owner because I allow her to shit outdoors and pick it up, rinse residue with a water bottle and fully dispose of the waste (in a biodegradable bag no less). All of which is within the law.

Makes total sense. Got it 🤣🤣🤣

I think it IS lazy, plus selfish, not to train your dog to poo on your own property. People used to toilet their dogs on their own property, I don't know when it started to be that dogs were doing dumps in plain site of the rest of us who don't wish to see such things, nor deal with the aftermath.

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/02/2025 16:34

My dogs use the garden more than on a walk. If they have to go while out then they got to go.

Agreed. My dog poos in my own garden more than her walks. If she wants to poo while I'm out I am not stopping her. I pick it up!

Newbie8918 · 10/02/2025 16:38

@DiscoBaIIs you're tapped. People used to let their dogs out in the morning and they'd roam until tea time.

For someone who is 'anti pet' you claim to know a lot about pet behaviour and training them. It's laughable!

What utter rubbish! You’re trying to say that it’s a recent thing that dogs crap in the street?

Bloody tell when I was a kid, dogs used to roam around on their own, be tied up outside shops are certainly crap on the street.

I’ve trained my dog to do a lot of things, but that’s not on my list to even consider.

I’ll wait until it becomes a hanging offence!

Hdjdb42 · 10/02/2025 16:59

Yes it's fine. Many people don't have grassed areas, like inner city residents.

Because woman get attacked on a daily basis by men and walking around in a dark field on your own is just an unnecessary risk when there are alternatives. You're clearly male.

Not going out in the dark because you're a woman is a disproportional fear response that severely limits your life experiences though. 'Attacks' is a hard one to find good data for, but if we go with murders specifically, about 100 women are killed by men in the UK a year. About 60% of those victims know their killer. So only about 40 women are killed by random men a year - out of around 35 million. 0.0001% of women.

As a comparator, around 0.2% of the population is invovled in a car accident a year - so you are about 2000 times more likely to be in a car accident than get killed by a strange man. I doubt you refuse to get in a car, so why on earth would you let the very small chance of being attacked by a man stop you living your life to the full.

(I'm a woman by the way.)

Wow! There are some very angry people on here today. The state humans leave the countryside and beaches in is far more concerning to me, vomit in the street, rubbish all over the verges and left over our beautiful beach after a sunny weekend, sewage dumped in the rivers and seas, needles in play parks, I could go on and on.
I most definitely will not be purchasing nappies for my dogs and horses 😂.

Yup, the nut jobs are certainly out in force!

I didnt say I don't ever go out in the dark 🤦‍♀️ I said going out in a dark field alone at night for the sake of a dog walk when he could easily and safely be walked elsewhere is lower risk than going out in the field. Its a simple fact. But you took just 1 of my reponses and turned it into a weird science experiment.

Certainly where I grew up (leafy affluent area around Surrey/Berkshire borders), it was NOT the done thing to have your dog poo on the pavement. Just didn't see it. Now, it is everywhere. This may in great part be due to the increase in dogs, and general downfall of society. I had a lot of friends growing up, only two had dogs. When we walked them, they would already have pooed in their own back garden. Picking up poo wasn't even a thing - they just were trained to poo at home. As it should be.

WiddlinDiddlin · 10/02/2025 17:20

GRex · 09/02/2025 20:59

Your dog did not start out old with dementia, the issue is that you never bothered to train it to poke its bum off the kerb, then collect, while nobody has to get the poo on their shoes nor wheels. And you still won't even think about why you should try. So unbelievably selfish.

Go on then... lets have the step by step of how to train a dog to park its bum over a kerb to poop, since you are clearly the expert in this matter.

Please note that even guide dogs/assistance dogs are not trained SO specifically to poo in a certain position relative to kerbs/other objects, simply trained to go on cue in a general area.

Also, do note that if you can get your dog to poo in the gutter, there is no legal requirement (road depending) to pick it up.

@WiddlinDiddlin hope she knows that I'll share the ring doorbell footage though 🤣

Verv · 10/02/2025 17:34

I have no issue with dogs pooing so long as its picked up, bagged up and binned appropriately.

As soon as mutt takes the shitting stance, move dog to edge of kerb. Job done.

Mumofyellows · 10/02/2025 17:37

@DiscoBaIIs where I live there's no poo on the pavement. Despite pretty much all of my neighbours owning dogs. Everyone just picks it up. I have seen the photos on the other thread of a disgusting pavement absolutely covered in poo, but that's certainly not the case here.
As I said earlier, in France where my family live (very nice area) there is poo everywhere, on the pavement and shopping streets. I don't see that here 🤷🏽‍♀️.

zeroherox · 10/02/2025 18:45

Not sure how I go about training my dog to poo in my garden. He just holds it. I think the exercise stimulates him to go and the need to pee to mark his territory on the walk is strong. He doesn't like to do it on his own doorstep. Maybe that comment will prove a few comments!

As for not going out in the dark. I'm an anxious person, I'm nervous in the day. It's just amplified in the dark because of the unknowns. It's a personal thing to me. I'm not speaking for everyone.

I didn't expect my post to have so many replies. Shame most of them don't actually address my question.
