To let dog poo in the street

AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street?

We live near a field and DH usually takes our dog over there. He's going away for a few days so I will solely be walking the dog. My problem is I get very very anxious in the dark, can't see properly even with the torch and it really stresses me out. Like heart/head pounding. Previously I have walked the dog around the estate we live on and he poos on the pavement. Some houses have no front garden and I always feel very guilty as it's so close to their homes. I ALWAYS pick up but you know sometimes it's not perfect. I'm aware of lots of doorbell cameras to. My dog refuses to poo in our garden. So AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street allowing me relax a little that I'm not offending anyone or do I need to wait until it's light. He is used to very early and late walks.

Your dog did not start out old with dementia, the issue is that you never bothered to train it to poke its bum off the kerb, then collect, while nobody has to get the poo on their shoes nor wheels. And you still won't even think about why you should try. So unbelievably selfish.

My dog is a rescue, so she could have well started out with me with dementia. As it happens, she didn't. But her previous training has gone out the window, due to her dementia. So don't have a go at me for that. A whole lot of her training has gone backwards due to it. Again, not my fault.
I have ALWAYS picked up her poo, and when it was runny, I had a bottle of water with me to wash it away. If you think I should be getting on my hands and knees, and using tweezers to pick up the tiny particles, then you are the one that is being unreasonable. You would only notice such tiny poo particles if you yourself was also on your hands and knees. If that is the case, I feel sorry for you. There are better hobbies out there.

I grew up with dogs. I don't understand when this trend started of letting dogs poo all over the pavement. It's revolting how the poo is walked through classrooms, through flats on wheelchair or pushchair wheels, through restaurants by the unwary... and yes the "residual" is still a massive problem. Your dog needs to learn to poo in the gutter, wee on the verge or in the gutter. And you pick up the poo from the gutter. It's basic puppy training FFS, go to get a trainer if you genuinely have no clue how to look after your pet.

Edited

I've owned dogs my whole life, all of my friends, family, neighbours have dogs and I've never ever heard of having to train them to poo in the gutter 🤣 for what it's worth mine only go on grass and we live in the country so it's usually footpaths and fields and we obviously pick it up, but it's certainly a new thing that dogs poo on the pavement?! My family live in France and it's far worse than here, poo everywhere, it's awful. Not just invisible remnants of poo either, full on shits.
@YeOldeGreyhound don't listen, you sound like a wonderful owner and your lovely old girl is very lucky to have you.

Mumofyellows · 09/02/2025 21:09

*certainly not a new thing

Washing up liquid and what next? A.carpet cleaner? Do you guys usually lick the pavement or what?

I've already said upthread that I use a basin of hot water and Zoflora to clean in front of my house. I'm not a dog owner, but I am sick of dog mess being left on the pavement in front of my home.

It was certainly the norm to train dogs to use the gutter when I was a girl, but I guess I'm old.

@WearyAuldWumman I've never heard of that, my parents and grandparents had dogs too, and that's never been something I've seen 🤷🏽‍♀️

Same. Infact, they just used to let their dogs out to fend for themselves, and come back for dinner.

There were some people who did that round our way back in the '60s and '70s. The result was that our town finished up with some dogs packing up. In 1972 - the year that we moved house - there was a pack of dogs roaming round the new housing estate.

They were eventually rounded up by the authorities and - I assume - put down. There had been problems with them attacking smaller children.

After that, if you saw a dog roaming around on its own, you could be pretty certain it was lost or a stray.

I am tempted to go outside and get a photo. There is no room between cars. Even I can't get out between them.
I don't live near a school, but I live in a house that is obviously in a street so I live near other people's houses.
I do clear up after my dog. That is the law.

How do the cars manoeuvre out if they are as tight up against one another that there isn't room to let a skinny mutt curl one out?

My mum's dog used to go out every morning and come back for dinner. I dread to think how many puppies he was responsible for! One time, I was out on my paper round and saw him having a good old time with a stray female.
The dog warden used to get him, and call my parents to collect him. Happened loads!

Please give me some legitimate advice on how to train a nearly 15 year old dog with dementia, how to poo in the narrow gap between cars when we are out on a walk.
She poos, I pick it up. That is all I need to do. I am doing nothing wrong by doing that much.

Honestly, time was, it was a kindness not to let it get to this stage. When you have a dog shitting in your house, doddering about with dementia, surely it is time to let the dog go.

No. I have regular quality of life appointments with my vet. She poos in doors and sometimes stares at her reflection in the TV. She is fine in all other respects.
So you have gone from telling me to bleach pavements to having my dog put to sleep now.
Just no.

I am more concerned about the OP taking so many photos of dog poo. She needs to get a new hobby.

When she is going to poo, you bring her to the edge of the pavement, then as she squats you nudge her bum round so it's poking over, exactly as you would do with a puppy. Then pick up.

There's a lady near me with two dogs who has a wheelchair due to MS. She is always careful to get the dogs to the side and pick up. As she says, if she can do it then what on earth is wrong with all the able bodied adults forcing everyone else to deal with the poo?

I pick up my dog's poo already. If it is sloppy, I wash it away with water.
I do what is required as set out by law. If a dog warden saw my dog poo on the path, and saw me pick it up, they are not going to chastise me for that.
Anything else is your own made up rules. Send me a leaflet in the post about them if they are official.

Not required, I just pick my dogs poo up. 🤷‍♀️

You don’t write the rules…… thank goodness!

SpringChickenGiblets · 09/02/2025 22:10

I used to live in a city and we always carried a bottle with washing up liquid and water in it when walking our dog in case they did a poo. We gave the pavement a scoosh and made sure there was no residue left, I would hate to think of anyone having shit from my dog on their shoes or worse pram wheels.
