To let dog poo in the street

AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street?

We live near a field and DH usually takes our dog over there. He's going away for a few days so I will solely be walking the dog. My problem is I get very very anxious in the dark, can't see properly even with the torch and it really stresses me out. Like heart/head pounding. Previously I have walked the dog around the estate we live on and he poos on the pavement. Some houses have no front garden and I always feel very guilty as it's so close to their homes. I ALWAYS pick up but you know sometimes it's not perfect. I'm aware of lots of doorbell cameras to. My dog refuses to poo in our garden. So AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street allowing me relax a little that I'm not offending anyone or do I need to wait until it's light. He is used to very early and late walks.

Any dog thread on MN descends into the dramatic. It is sad and ridiculous. I would not want to live with so much hate for a sentient animal that brings joy to so many people.
When these threads get going, you can see the truly unhinged people.

No dog should poo on the street or a field, pickup or not. Picking up leaves remnants, it’s disgusting.
You don’t poo on the street and pick it up, so why should your dog? Dog nappies, or some other way that does not involve the public streets.
Grass fields and verges are just as bad.

How about you splat a dog poo on your face then pick it off, see if you still smell it - not completely gone has it…

Edited

You are being ridiculous

And then they question why some say they prefer dogs to people. They only have to read their own bat shit posts back to get the answer.

Don't be a disgusting pig, pick up your dog's shit!!! 😠 😡

Try reading the post before you burst a gasket

Newbie8918 · 09/02/2025 23:03

@DiscoBaIIs no! You did not just quote 'slavery' as a comparison do a dog pooing on a pavement which is then cleaned up and if needed, washed away by a responsible owner!

Shade17 · 09/02/2025 23:35

I have never heard of or seen someone getting their dog to shit in the gutter. As for catching it in a poo bag as it comes out, I’d love to see that in action, I can’t think of one family or friend’s dog who you could do this with. My big boy’s arsehole’s about 75cm above the ground when he’s standing, I’ve never seen a dog shit whilst standing up though 😂

serendippity · 10/02/2025 00:08

I'm an occasional "poo bag swinger" on purpose, as I have a girl dog who pees and I'm always worried people think she's pooing and I'm not picking it up, so I try and advertise that I'm a diligent poo picker 😂 on a serious note, my dog poos in our garden and also out and about...because she is an animal and that's what they do. I spend £100 a month on her food to ensure anything she does is firm and easily pick up able with no residue. I'm not remotely embarrassed or ashamed that she goes when needed!!

Not one of us have expressed hate towards the dogs though, it's the 💩.

FastFood · 10/02/2025 07:08

💩 that is being picked up though.
But apparently its now akin to terrorism, high treason and probably murder. Peak MN.

No, I did not. I mentioned it, among other things, to show that legal does not mean moral, and what was once legal, now is not. HTH.

Speaking of swinging poo bags, and I have told this anecdote on here before.

When my children were little, we used to meet up with other families with kids similar ages, as you do. One day, we'd gone to a beach, it has high dunes. One mum had her toddler in a baby carrier, on her front. She had another slightly older child, who had taken off running down the dunes and she was chasing him down. She also had a dog. And a bag of poo in one hand. This bag of poo was bang bang banging against the child in the carrier on her chest every jolty step she took. I felt utterly repulsed. I mean, sure, it's bagged, it didn't leak out, but it's just horrible, imo.

It might not have been completely ideal (although the poo was still separated from the child by the plastic bag), but what choice did she have - not pick up (not ok), leave the poo bag (not ok), not run after her child (not ok). I find it kind of crazy that dog owners are (rightly) complained about if we don't pick up, are (rightly) complained about if we leave the poo bag, but are also complained about (by some) if we're doing the right thing and seen carrying a full poo bag until we get to a suitable bin.

She could have tied it to her belt behind her. Just looked so so awful seeing this poo bag bash against the little child like that. I accept I am quite poo-averse though, and obviously dog people don't mind it.

ViolinsPlayGentlyOn · 10/02/2025 09:58

TBF if she had a sling-aged child then she was probably very used to poo and didn’t even think about it

Newbie8918 · 10/02/2025 10:06

@DiscoBaIIs the morality of slavery and the morality of a dog pooing outside (and being picked up) is absolutely no comparison.

You come across as being slightly obsessed with the topic. Pavements are not sanitary places. Cats, dogs, foxes, birds, horses, all poo and pee outside, like it or not!

Responsible owners should pick up and leave no trace. End of.

Your comments are getting ludicrous.

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 10/02/2025 10:30

My mum had a phrase which triggered the dog to defecate in a set place in the garden so that it never soiled public places.

No idea why people take dogs out for the sole purpose of soiling public footways. It's disgusting. You can argue to the contrary all you like. Unless your animal is particularly talented and does hover turds, then a trace is always left behind. These bacteria/viruses/parasites remain and are transferred to shoes/wheels (scooters, pushchairs, wheelchairs) and therefore taken into homes. These 'unseen' stains can be reconstituted in rain for up to three months. And you can use the 'wild animals do it all the time' argument as much as you want - dogs are domesticated- not wild.

I look after my grandchildren and regularly have to put pushchairs in my car boot. Once after taking my shopping bags into the kitchen I could smell the most putrid dog dirt. It must've come from the pushchair wheels into the boot after which I had unknowingly put bags on top of the shit.

Christ only knows the amount of dog shit that gets traipsed into schools everyday. My grandchildren's local primary is next to the village green where there are always dozens of fresh fly blown heaps every day. The children play here while waiting for school to start. And then there's the 'kill two birds with one stone' parents who decide to walk their dogs at school times in amongst the hundreds of children and adults - all barking and jumping up the legs of others passing by leaving their filthy marks and leaving holes in fabric. The children walk the 'traces' in to school where they are then told to sit on top of it as they have to sit on the carpet. Then comes the message that noro virus is going round the school - no it cannot be possible that noro virus is present every single half term throughout the year. The fact that children are sitting on the floor, touching whatever has been walked in, is the cause of the vast majority of sickness bugs.

Who wants to take filthy nasty shit into their homes?

If you can train a dog to sit you can train it to shit.

No, I'm sorry but there is no way that a properly picked up and bagged dog poo, is leaving residue on your wheels and transferring onto your bag.

The issue here is owners not picking up after their dog. No one in their right mind will disagree that owners should leave no trace.

This is a different point as to whether dogs should poo outside. Of course they should as long as it's properly cleaned up!

Well many of us disagree that "of course they should" is the correct response to whether dogs should shit in public. My response would be absolutely not - how selfish and rank. I can't even understand the mentality of thinking our pavements are fair game for your dog to shit on. Absolutely vile.

I didn't say any such thing. I said slavery used to be legal, and people felt it was acceptable and moral - heck, even the bible says it's ok! Now, it is not, obviously rightly so. In the same way, I hope that whilst it is currently legal to let your dog shit on the pavement, it becomes illegal soon. Times change. We must evolve. HTH.

I am 'obsessed' to the extent that I have reached saturation point with dog shit everywhere, cleaning it off my kids' shoes, tyres, seeing it traipsed in to their schools, because these days, it is all over the place, and I am furious about it. Ok? Or shall we just leave it and be cool with the amount of shit we have to wade through because of selfish dog arseholes.

By your own admission you’re quite “poo adverse” , ie totally OTT.

Tessasanderson · 10/02/2025 11:41

I wouldnt give a toss if your dog poo'd on my doorstep as long as you picked it up. There is no issue here

Newbie8918 · 10/02/2025 11:56

@DiscoBaIIs it will never become illegal because properly picked up and disposed of poo, is not an issue to most people. You have admitted that you have a problem with poo so that's a 'you' problem and not a 'me' problem.

I will continue to operate as a good dog owner and clean up after my dog, no matter where she poos.

I'm finished with this discussion now thanks.

But you'll walk through the bits not picked up, and straight into your house.
