Attending a christening and not sure if this is OTT.

Bit lacey for my taste but it's in no way "too much" it's very classy and not too "look at me" because its in a darker Conservative colour.

StopPissingMeOff · 08/02/2025 09:58

It's a nice dress but personally I think it is too ott for a christening.

Cunningfungus · 08/02/2025 09:59

Is there a “do” after in a hotel/hall/function suite? It’s a lovely dress and assuming christening is in a church, you could wear a long smart lightweight coat in church (I’ve got one precisely for this purpose) then I think it would be fine.

Littlefish · 08/02/2025 10:00

It's not see through, until the light is behind you, and then I suspect it is.

Lovely dress for an evening party or night out.

Soontobe60 · 08/02/2025 10:00

Just no! Fine for a fancy wedding / theatre / dinner in a posh restaurant, OTT for a christening. The only person in a long lace frock at a christening should be the baby being christened!

TheAzureSwan · 08/02/2025 10:01

I'm old fashioned and think a Christening is about a child and the religious significance of the ceremony.
Are Christenings now fashion shows ?
How sad.

toomuchfaff · 08/02/2025 10:02

beautiful dress, not to OTT

SecondMrsTanqueray · 08/02/2025 10:03

I think it’s too dressy for a christening.

JimHalpertsWife · 08/02/2025 10:04

As a wedding guest - fine
As a christening guest - not fine

28Fluctuations · 08/02/2025 10:05

If this style is roughly in keeping with what people around you would wear to a christening, then go for it. Love the colour.

I wouldn't normally think that's a dress for a christening/church service, but if it works in your circle and you like it, do it.

Fencehedge · 08/02/2025 10:05

People don't really dress up for a church christening though, unless things are different in your family. Lovely dress.

Nannyfannybanny · 08/02/2025 10:06

Too dressy, too Lacey. Assuming it's a church ceremony..I'm old skool, black for funerals, unless otherwise requested,no black or white for weddings. Dress down for christenings, which aren't about you.

BitOutOfPractice · 08/02/2025 10:08

I think the length of it makes it too evening-y.

I wore a lovely silk dress to a “nice” christening (very similar colour actually!) and I was waaaaay overdressed. There was someone there in leggings 🙄 I would rather be overdressed than under but I think you might stand out like a sore thumb in this.

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/02/2025 10:10

Christenings usually take place during Sunday morning service. Most of the congregation will be in jeans and jumpers. Just wear a nice day dress and a coat . Churches can be cold!

FabforFeb · 08/02/2025 10:11

It’s a bit sexy for a daytime family do but if it’s your usual style your family won’t take any notice.

Crazykefir · 08/02/2025 10:12

I think you'd need to pair it with a long coat to cover up the split at the back.

Doggymummar · 08/02/2025 10:12

I was gonna say, jeans and jumpers for Sunday morning church but I was beaten to it.

FabforFeb · 08/02/2025 10:12

I do think christenings are dressy occasions but daytime style and not over the top.

I agree. Guests need to turn up and look clean, tidy and presentable. Sadly many today look like they are going out for a day at the races .

HotCrossBunplease · 08/02/2025 10:13

Impossible to tell without knowing the general fashion style of the other guests and the host family.

My own gut feel is that it’s a bit too tight and sexy and the long cuffs make it look a bit teenage. But if all the other women there are wearing tight dresses then it’s fairly conservative in terms of colour and overall style.

wipeywipe · 08/02/2025 10:13

I don't think it's a very nice dress tbh.

LittleBearPad · 08/02/2025 10:16

It’s a bit much, it isn’t really church in a Sunday morning to me.

LadyRoughDiamond · 08/02/2025 10:19

Fine for dinner out or a party, but too clingy and dressy for church. Rule of life: a sure way to make others think you’re unfamiliar and uncomfortable in a situation is to overdress.

In my family christenings are a celebration.

After church we go out for a nice meal or sometimes there is a larger get together. People dress appropriately for a family celebration which I don't find 'sad' at all!

Snowmanscarf · 08/02/2025 10:21

I think it’s lovely and would be fine for a Christening.
